Week 24 Preview: Bristol (Race Two)

Irwin Tools Night Race

Week 24

By Richard Tix

NASCAR leaves Michigan International Speedway and another driver notches his 3rd win of 2014. That driver would be Jeff Gordon who has had a great bounce back season after a mediocre 2013 (not that it was bad, but it did start rumors he might retire). Well Jeff looks like he is in his prime and ready to win another Championship.

What other drivers are going to make there mark in 2014? Well one thing we know, NASCAR has 3 races for drivers to make a move and get into the Chase. You either need to win, or be one of the highest guys in points if you want a shot in the 10 race Chase. So, will an underdog without a win find one at Bristol? Could Kahne, Bowyer, or Kenseth finally get a 2014 victory?

The Good, Middle, and Bad

The Good
  • Kyle Busch- One bad outing can not erase all the good he has done at this track. One can not look past the fact that he has 5 career Bristol wins in 19 career starts.
  • Jeff Gordon- Gordon has been having a come back season this year after talks of retirement by media and fans. Well earlier this year he finished 7th at Bristol and will look to improve that mark this time around.
  • Kasey Kahne- Kahne has four straight top 10's at Bristol and could use a win or at the very least a great finish to help his Chase chances.
The Middle
  • Brad Keselowski- In 9 career races at Bristol BK has 2 wins. He hasn't had quite the success as of late but I would expect a bounce back as he always seems to start towards the front.
The Bad
  • AJ Allmendinger- 12 career starts at BMS and zero top 10's. In that time he only has two career top 15's so AJ still has some work to do on this short track.
  • Casey Mears- One top 15 and one top 20 in his last 8 races. True he is on a smaller team and I do cut guys like that a break, but Bristol hasn't been his spot.
Track Stats
  • Since 2006 (17 races) Chevy has only won 4 races
  • Since that same time Toyota has 6 wins, Ford 4, and Dodge 3
  • Both Kyle and Kurt Busch have swept both Bristol races in a season. Kyle in 2009 and Kurt in 2003

Week 22 Preview: Watkins Glen

Cheez-It 355 at the Glen

Week 22

By Richard Tix

Its a big week for NASCAR. No its not the Daytona 500. We already went to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The All Star Race is over. We have already got our Darlington Stripe. No, its a big week in NASCAR because we will be turning right again, and a surprise driver could punch his ticket to the Chase.

Will it happen? I predicted no to start the season (and will stand by it) but does that mean it wont happen? Guys like Ambrose, Truex, and Allmendinger are chomping at the bit to get here. Will they win the title if they get into the Chase? No, but its a New Era in NASCAR Chase world and anyone can make a name for themselves with just one win.

Win and you are in....

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Marcus Ambrose- This is known wide and far, Marcus Ambrose is good on road courses. In fact, he won at the Glen not only in 2011 but also in 2012. This year, things are different in NASCAR. Now, a win at a road course can me an easy bid into the Sprint Cup Chase. That is what Ambrose is shooting for.
  • Brad Keselowski- Man, BK has provided (been a part of) some of the best finishes at the Glen in recent years. His battle's with Amrose and then his battle with Kyle Busch just last year have gave us fans some awesome road course racing. He has three straight runner up finishes here, will 2014 be the year he knocks down the wall to VL?
  • Kyle Busch- Kyle is the most recent winner at the Glen and he won in dramatic fashion over BK last year. Rowdy also won at Watkins Glen in 2008 and holds a streak of 8 straight top 10's (4 of those top 5's).
  • Tony Stewart- Yes, its four drivers this week in the "Good" category. Some extra love has to be given out to Smoke even though his last two finishes have been 19th and 27th. He still has 5 career wins here in 14 starts and that can not be over looked (last coming in 2009. Missed 2013 because of injury).
The Middle
  • Martin Truex Jr- If anyone needs this race (other then maybe Ambrose) more let me know. This might be the only track he has a legitament shot at winning the rest of the way. Sure, he has had some decent runs at a few tracks left, but he is now with a smaller team. He has 5 top 10's (3 top 5's) in his 8 career races at Watkins Glen.
The Bad
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr- Last time he posted a top ten at the Glen? 2005. But, we said something similar before NASCAR went to Sonoma and he had a pretty good run there (pin balling off everyone like Kyle Larson at Eldora, but non the less). So maybe this is truly the year of Jr. Still, three top 10's in 14 tries is nothing to write home about.
  • Brian Vickers- In 9 career starts at Watkins Glen Vickers only has one top 10 (2005- 8th). A lot need to be said about how his car has held up (Transmission, Engine, and crashes) but he has finished 5 of the other 4 races (that he had no issues with) on the lead lap, but still only has one top 10.
  • Paul Menard- 10 starts, 10 times finishing outside of the top 10. In fact he only has one top 15 and 5 top 20's in those 10 starts. Not too promising for a driver who may need a win to make the Chase.
Track Stats
  • Three straight years the race was won from the Pole (1993-95) and all three years Mark Martin was the winner.
  • Mark Martin has the most top 5's (12) and most top 10's (16) by any driver.
  • Tony Stewart has the most career wins (5).
  • Tim Richmond won the first race after NASCAR came back to the Glen (ran races in '57, '64, and '65) in 1986 beating out Darrell Waltrip. Part of his 7 win 1986 season.
  • Qualifying Record was set by Marcos Ambrose in 2013- 68.777 seconds (128.241 mph).
  • Steve Park won in 2000 after starting 18th, which is the farthest back a winner has started. Steve Parks only other Cup win was at Rockingham. Watkins Glen was his first.
  • Geoffrey Bodine's last career win was at Watkins Glen in 1996 (18 career wins).
  • Robby Gordon's final career win was also at the Glen in 2003. Where he first won Sonoma and then finished the Road Course sweep at Watkins Glen.
  • The race has been won from the front row 11 times (Pole 9 times) in 31 NASCAR races.
  • A race has been won only 10 times out of 31 races after starting outside of the top 5 and 8 times after starting outside the top 10.

Week 20 Preview: Indianapolis

Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400

Week 20

By Richard Tix

It was just MLB All Star weekend here in Minnesota so no long rants this week. NASCAR heads to Indy for its lone stop at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The entry list this week is a bit larger than the past few weeks because everyone wants a chance to run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Last season Ryan Newman won which would have been a driver stealing a win to get into the Chase. Jamie McMurray (2010) and Paul Menard (2011) have also notched wins at Indy which would both be considered upsets. So, in the first season where a driver can win and get into the Chase will one steal a win this Sunday? Lets dive right into the Good, Middle, and Bad.

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Tony Stewart- Not much to say about Smoke that people don't already know when it comes to Indy, he is that good. In 15 tries he has only finished out of the top 10 four times, and only twice outside the top 12 (17th and 23rd). He has a current streak of 5 top 10's here but last won in 2007 so he is due.
  • Jeff Gordon- The first 10 races run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway were pretty much all about Jeff Gordon. From 1994-2004 Gordon won 40% of the time (4 times) and had 8 finishes of 6th or better. Though JG hasn't won here since 2004 he has still been a front runner.
  • Jimmie Johnson- He has four career wins here but also seems to find bad luck from time to time. It seems to be feast or famine when it comes to his finishes.
  • Kyle Busch- After Gordon, Johnson and Stewart there is a huge fall off of drivers who have been consistently good at Indy. Kyle kind of fits that mold as he has 8 top 10's in 10 tries. Kyle has lacked dominant performances so far in his career (Only 2 top 5's and no wins) but he still has a good track record.

The Middle
  • Clint Bowyer- Lot's of drivers could fit into this spot this week, but the fact that in 8 tries Bowyer has only two top 10's but still manages a career average finish of 13.2 seems to be the definition of "middle," or average. He has yet to finish outside the top 20 in his career but boasts two 4th place finishes.

The Bad
  • Marcus Ambrose- Well he hasn't been good here, but he hasn't been terrible. But, no top 10's in 6 starts will still get you in the category no driver wants to be in.
  • Martin Truex Jr- The plus side is his last two finished here were 11th and 8th. The downside? He still has an average finish of 20.3 in his career and he is not with MWR anymore.
  • Kurt Busch- He has had a few good runs at Indy but it is hard to hide the fact that he has a 19.4 average finish in his 13 starts here. (Dale Earnhardt Jr also has comparable stats so Jr Nation you are lucky).
Track Stats
  • A race has been won from the Pole three times in 20 NASCAR races (Newman 2013, Jimmie Johnson 2008, and Kevin Harvick 2003).
  • Gordon and Johnson are tied for most track wins (4) and Tony Stewart just trails them with 2.
  • Eight current drivers have a win at Indy (included Bobby Labonte).
  • Of current drivers Gordon has led the most laps (488) followed by Johnson (302).
  • Cheverlet has won the last 11 races here and 12 of the last 13.
  • Toyota has yet to win at Indianapolis.

Week 19 Preview: New Hampshire (Race One)

Camping World RV Sales 301

Week 19

By Richard Tix

18 races into the 26 race to the Chase and 11 drivers have a win and are virtually locked for the last 10 races. 6 of those 11 drivers are a for sure lock having multiple wins yet guys like Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, and Kasey Kahne still do not have a win.

Going into NH 16 different current drivers (including Jeff Burton and Joe Nemechek) have a career win here at Loudon. Included in that list is 2014 drivers with zero wins Jeff Burton (4 NH wins), Ryan Newman (3), Tony Stewart (3), Clint Bowyer (2), Greg Biffle (1), Matt Kenseth (1), Brian Vickers (1), Joe Nemecheck (1), and Kasey Kahne (1). That is 17 wins at Loudon from drivers who have yet to win this season; a season where a win pretty much gets you into the Chase.

With that being said, will NH end up being another wild card race like Daytona was last week and provide us with a first time 2014 winner? I think guys like Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, and Clint Bowyer have to be on everyone's radar this weekend. If we have another repeat winner in 2014 then NASCAR will have 7 races left and 5 spots open for the Chase. The dash will begin to either lock yourself in with a win or get the best spot in the points standings.

So, as I have mentioned before (The Fight for Points) points will still matter in NASCAR and wins are not everything. Sure, wins make everything easier (which they should) but you will also be looked at and maybe even get in the Chase because of points. Once in the Chase you only have 3 tries each round to get a win. That means in the first round 9 of 12 drivers at the very least will move on because of points (not a win). As we move on the percentage chance that a driver still in the Chase winning goes down (Basic math, 4/43 is less of a chance then 16/43). So yes, wins will automatically move you to the next round, but don't tell me points wont matter. I will also not that in my opinion, guys who are running consistently and are doing will in the points standings will be the guys to look out for. These teams are showing chemistry by finishing well week after week. The driver is finishing well, the pit crew is having good stops, and the crew cheif is making great calls. What past Champion didn't have all of this going for them when they won the Championship?

Now, onto this weeks New Hampshire preview.

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Denny Hamlin- 16 starts, 10 top 10's, 7 top 5's, and 2 wins. DH has been very good at Loudon in his career. Last year as he struggled to get back to form he finishes 21st and 12th but in 2012 he had finishes of 2nd and 1st.
  • Jimmie Johnson- I get bored putting JJ in my "good" category, because lets be honest he could be in almost every "good" list or at the least in my "middle" list. But when you have 17 top 10's in 24 starts its pretty easy to make that list. Not to mention his 3 career wins and his 4 straight top 10's.
  • Jeff Gordon- When you look at career stats from each track its hard not to put a guy like JG on most "good" lists. That's why I tend to break it up by resent results. But Gordon has not finished about 15th since 2004 (25th). In his 38 starts at Loudon he only has 3 finishes outside the top 25 and only 6 outside the top 20.
  • Extra Credit-Tony Stewart
The Middle
  • Brad Keselowski- His results while with the #2 team are almost good enough to be in the "good" category (6 races, 3 top 5's, 4 top 10's, 11th and 35th). He also finished 6th when he was with James Finch in his first Cup start at Loudon. BK has yet to win at Loudon but don't write him off, he is due.
The Bad
  • Marcus Ambrose- Marcus gets up on the wheel at road courses but he doesn't have the same kind of results at Loudon. In his last 10 he has one top 10 and an average finish of 21.9. Normally anything outside of an average finish of 20 is not something to be proud of.
  • Aric Almirola- Five career starts at Loudon and Aric has one top 5. That's the good side of the story. The other side of the story is that his other four finishes were all outside of the top 20.
  • Paul Menard- Its not that he has been terrible at Loudon but in his last 10 starts he only has one top 15 (12th in 2012). But, in his last 6 he doesn't have a finish about 24th and 4 of those were in the top 20. Just don't expect him to have a great chance at a top 10 on Sunday.
Track Stats
  • Rusty Wallace won the first race at Loudon in 1993. He started 33rd.
  • Most cautions was the second race at Loudon, 1994, 17 for 78 laps. Ricky Rudd won the race.
  • Toyota have won the last three Loudon races before that Chevy had won 6 straight.
  • A Cup race at Loudon has been won from the Pole position five times (Newman-2011, Clint Bowyer-2007, Kevin Harvick-2006, Newman-2002, and Jeff Gordon-1998).
  • In 1999 Jeff Burton won after starting 38th (farthest back a winner has started).
  • Of current drivers Jeff Gordon has led the most laps (1352) over Tony Stewart (1302).
  • Ryan Newman has won the Pole at Loudon an astounding 7 times in his 24 starts.
  • 5 current full time drivers have 3 total wins at Loudon (Gordon, Newman, Johnson, Stewart, and Ku Busch). Jeff Burton (part time) has 4 career Loudon wins.
  • Jimmie Johnson has the longest current streak of top 10's (four).

Week 16 Preview: Sonoma

Sonoma Raceway

Toyota/Save Mart 350

By Richard Tix

Its time for NASCAR Sprint Cup cars to finally turn right in 2014. NASCAR heads to Sonoma Raceway just one week after Jimmie Johnson finally got that monkey off his back at Michigan and picked up his first career win there.

Some fans have been a bit reluctant to open up to road courses in NASCAR, but in recent years the idea has come full circle. I think in general much of the NASCAR population is even pushing for a road course in the Chase.

I for one enjoy the two trips to the road courses. I would even go as far as to add Road America (or another course) to the schedule. For one, it would add another variety to the schedule and it would give fans in the Midwest (myself included) another close track to go to.

For the record, I am also on the side of more short tracks in NASCAR. Take a few of the 1.5 tracks that get two stops a year and reduce them to one. Add in a short track or two (say Iowa Speedway. Again, I like the addition of a Midwest track because of my own personal connection, but many drivers think it would be a great add). Tracks that are different and you have to drive.

Ambrose v BK at Watkins Glenn
Recently the truck series went to Gateway Motorsports Park. Now this track isn't technically a short track (1.25 miles) but it has unique characteristics and would test drivers. There are plenty of examples of tracks to add. NASCAR attendance has declined since its boom, but NASCAR couldn't sustain that boom as no sport ever does. But where they go from here is key to continue to be successful.

Change is never the easiest thing to take (just check out fan reactions to the new Chase format)
Kyle v BK at Watkins Glenn
but a change in the schedule needs to happen eventually. 1.5 mile tracks were great when the sport was at its peak. Lots of fans could go and see some good racing, but now some don't need two stops a year. Even Michigan (which I go to every year and love) could be moved down to once a year. The high speeds are great, and grooves are starting to open up again, but a lot of times strategy is what decides the winner. Now, strategy in NASCAR is great, but when you are at the track you want to see racing and that is how the sport started. When it started your strategy was to have the fastest most reliable car, now fuel, areo, and when you make a pit stop are almost as important as being the fastest car.

So back to Sonoma and turning right. If there wasn't enough of a case for unique tracks I will have you take a look back at some old road course races. Last year Road America was a lot of fun. Brad Keselowski and Marcus Ambrose in the wet weather, fun. And BK and Kyle Busch going at it on the final laps was a blast. Just think if a road course was part of the Chase?

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good:
  • Jeff Gordon- Gordon hasn't won at Sonoma the last 7 years, but that does not mean he is not a strong contender. Those last 7 include two runner up's, 4 top 5's, and 7 top 10's. He is not as dominate as he was in the late 90's early 2000's but he still will be a front runner.
  • Tony Stewart- The only other driver to have multiple wins at Sonoma (other than Gordon), Stewart also hasn't been as dominate as of late here. In his last 7 races here he does have two finishes out of the top 10 (28th and 39th (crash)). In that same span he also notched two runner up finishes and 5 top 10's.
  • Clint Bowyer- Bowyer has three straight top 5's at Sonoma including a win in 2012. He has 8 career races at Sonoma with 6 top 10's, 5 top 5's and a win. Bowyer has seemed to figure out Sonoma so he could run up front most of the day.
  • Extra Credit: Marcus Ambrose
The Middle:
  • Jimmie Johnson- This week, this is just an additional good driver. JJ is only in the middle position because when is the last time you thought of Sonoma and Jimmie Johnson is who came to your mind? Well in this last 10 races here he has 7 top 10's, 4 top 5's, and a win. Not too shabby for a guy you don't think about on road courses.
The Bad:
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr- 14 tries at at top 10 and Dale Jr has come up short every time. Those arent the kind of stats you want on your side. However, he does have 6 finishes of 11th-13th in those same 14 races. Either way, if you don't have a top 10 at a track (no matter how close you have come) and your average finish is 21.5, you will end up in the category.
  • Aric Almirola- Not a long track record here, so it maybe a bit unfair, but Aric only has one top 20 in his 3 starts at Sonoma. What is in his favor is the fact that that 20th place finish was just last year. His other two finishes were 28th.
  • Denny Hamlin- DH has 8 career starts at Sonoma and the first 4 and second 4 are totally different stories. His first 4 finishes were 12, 10, 27, and 5. His last 4 have been 34, 37, 35, and 23. As you can see the trend hasn't been in the positive. Maybe Hamlin will start a new 4 race trend in the right direction this time around?
Track Stats
  • Of current drivers only Jeff Gordon (5) and Tony Stewart have multiple wins at Sonoma
  • Ricky Rudd won the first Cup race here in 1989
  • A driver running a Ford has not won a race at Sonoma since 2002 (Ricky Rudd)
  • 2004 (Jeff Gordon) was the last time a race was won from the Pole
  • 3 of Jeff Gordon's 5 wins have come from the Pole
  • Juan Pablo Montoya won after starting 32nd (2007) and Kyle Busch won after starting 30 (2008). Those are the fathers back a winner has come from. In fact, no one else has won from father back then 14th (Martin Truex Jr 2013) other then them.
  • 17 different drivers have won at Sonoma since 1989
  • NASCAR has had 9 straight different winners (2005. The last repeat, Gordon 2004 and 2006.
  • Most cautions was 8 in 2005.
  • Jeff Gordon is the only driver to win at least back to back (In fact it was back to back to back, 1998-2000)

Week 15 Preview: Michigan

Michigan International Speedway

Quicken Loans 400

By Richard Tix

As NASCAR leaves its only track on the schedule with just three turns, it heads back to a track with four and plenty of speed. The past few years its about this time that fans start mumbling about Dale Jr and how he needs a win on the season. The track that comes to most fans minds? Michigan International Speedway. That's because in 2012 he broke his win less streak here, not too mention he has had some other good runs in years past.

This year the story is different and the mumbling's are not about if he will finally get a win, but instead if he will win back-to-back? That's because Dale Earnhardt Jr just won his second race of 2014 at Pocono and will have the chance to win back to back races for the first time in his career.

Strategies will play a large role in the outcome of the Quicken Loans 400. By this time in the year a lot of guys are already locked into the Chase. With that being said, those same guys may look to stretch an end of race fuel run a bit longer because they already know they will be in the last 10 races.

Same can be said for the guys who don't have a win. Would a guy win less like Kasey Kahne try and stretch his fuel if he was in a position to win, which would virtually lock him into the Chase during a year that has been full of struggles? I bring up fuel in both cases because many years the June race (heck sometimes both June and August) come down to fuel mileage.

Check out these articles from last year. Preview and Review of the June race.

Michigan Weekend 2013 (More from the Garages and my weekend, in August again)

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Brian Vickers- This list will start out with an underdog. Vickers has no stats from MIS in the #55, but most would argue he is in better equipment then when he was in the #83. In 8 races with the 83 team he had 6 top 10's, 2 top 5's, and a win. He lone bad finish was his first one with the 83 team, 41st, his other non top 10 was 15th. Also to note, he had 3 Poles in arrow from 2008-09, so maybe he will get that mojo back after not running here since 2011. *This spot was more of a shout out with all the tough luck health issues he has had, his track record here is good.**
  • Greg Biffle- Roush Racing know's what theyre doing here, and Biffle has been a part of that. In his lat 10 here he has 7 top 10's, 5 top 5's, and 2 wins. The Biff has won 2 of the last 3 races at MIS.
  • Carl Edwards- Carl has 7 top 10's in the last 10 MIS races to go along with 4 top 5's. He hasn't been amazing here in the last 10 (zero wins) but he has contended and led at least a lap in 5 of them.
  • Extra Credit: Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin
The Middle
  • Clint Bowyer- 6 straight top 10's, and 8 top 10s in the last 10 races. Yet, Clint hasn't been a big time contender at MIS for a win. So, it is very possible he will finish in the top 10, but it might be a stretch to think he will win.
  • Extra Credit: Dale Earnhardt Jr
The Bad
  • Kurt Busch- This maybe a stretch, but in the last 10 MIS races Kurt only has 3 top 10's. However 2 of those are top 5's and he has 2 Pole's in that time frame. Chance are he wont finish bad, but this is all by recent stats. Most of his troubles have been engine issues or crashes.
  • Jimmie Johnson- Luck has not been on JJ's side at MIS. His last three finishes are 40th, 28th, and 27th. In his last 10 starts at MIS he has 6 finishes of 22nd or higher. Bad luck or not, this is is a track that JJ has yet to win at in 24 tries.
  • Aric Almirola- Only four career starts at MIS, so he doesn't have a lot of track record here, but he hasn't been anything special. He doesn't have a top 15 in any of those 4 starts, but also hasn't finished worse then 20th.
Track Stats
  • Cale Yarborough won the first race at MIS in 1969 and also two of the first three.
  • Ford has won four straight race at MIS. Joey Logano, Greg Biffle (twice)
  • The furthest back a driver has started a race from and won was 32nd in 2009 by Mark Martin.
  • A MIS race has been won 17 times from the Pole position, mot recently was the last MIS race won by Joey Logano.
  • Most cautions was 10 in 2006 and the race was won by Matt Kenseth. This is also the only MIS race that had double digit cautions in 89 races.

Week 14 Preview: Pocono

Pocono Raceway

Pocono's 400

By Richard Tix

Well, Dover left us with a little bit of everything. From dominate, to close racing, to the strange. Now NASCAR heads to Pocono and ask's, "what turn four?"

The question is, can Jimmie Johnson keep up his hot streak after winning two straight? He is no slouch here at Pocono, and you will notice what list he is on (hint, its not the Bad category).

If you believe (like myself) we wont have more than 16 drivers that win this year then we know 10 drivers are in the Chase. If you are still of the group that thinks more than 16 will win, then 3 drivers have locked down there spot in the Chase (Johnson, Logano, and Harvick).

So, what comes next? With the race to the Chase half way done I don't see 7 more guys winning a race in 2014. Each time a guy wins the percentage of a new driver winning a race goes down, and when a guy like Kenseth finally wins the percentage will go down dramatically.

How I see it possibly playing out. Matt Kenseth will get a win in the next 13 races, he is running too good not to. Greg Biffle, though he isn't running that well, has a decent shot at a win with some good tracks in the next 13 (including MIS twice). Smoke, Bowyer, and Newman may also be in the mix. But as you can see we are starting to get slim and that would just make 15 winners if each one of these guys got a win in the next 13.

Enough about the Chase race. Lets move onto Pocono and the Good, Middle, and Bad drivers (stats).

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Tony Stewart- Smoke has 8 top 10's in his last 10 starts at Pocono including 6 top 5's and a win in 2009. In the last 10 he also won the Pole twice so he knows how to get around the Tricky Triangle. We are heading into Summer so will Smoke get into his normal Summer Hot stretch?
  • Jeff Gordon- In the last 10 Pocono races Gordon has 7 top 10's. 4 of those top tens were top 5's, and two of those were wins. Not bad right? Well even two of his top 10's were 6th place finishes so he just missed out on a few top 5's. The better news for Gordon fans, he was runner up here in the last Pocono race in August.
  • Jimmie Johnson- Last year JJ swept the two Pocono race Poles while winning the first stop here. He also lead 171 of 320 laps in the two races. That means JJ was leading 47.5% of the time at Pocono in 2013.
  • Extra Credit- Ryan Newman
The Middle
  • Kevin Harvick- In his last 9 starts at Pocono he hasn't finished worse then 17th but also hasn't finished better then 4th. In his last 10 he has only led a lap in one race (2010) and it was only 5 laps. Harvick may have a decent finish here, but contending for the win maybe asking a bit much.
The Bad
  • Casey Mears- Zero top 10's in his last 10 starts at Pocono, worse yet is his average finish is 28th in that stretch. Even worse yet, in the last 10 Mears only has finihed in the top 20 once.
  • AJ Allmendinger- His last 9 starts at Pocono hasn't been pretty. He has 1 top 10 and 2 top 20 in his last 9. His last three have been finishes of 33rd, 33rd, and 31st.
Track Stats
  • Richard Petty won the first race at Pocono in 1974. He also won 2 of the first 3.
  • Tim Richmond won three straight Pocono races (1986-1987). Won 4 career Pocono races.
  • Carl Edwards won in 2005 from 29th position, the furthest spot back someone has won from.
  • 5 straight different drivers have won at Pocono.
  • Chevrolet has won 3 straight Pocono races (Kahne, Johnson, and Gordon)
  • Most cautions was 13 in 1990 (winner Harry Gant) and 2005 (winner Kurt Busch).
  • Race has been won from the Pole 6 times in the last 16 races.

Week 13 Preview: Dover

Dover International Speedway

FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks

By Richard Tix

The Coca-Cola 600 is over and Jimmie Johnson finally got his first win of the 2014 season. Just one week later, NASCAR heads to Dover which just happens to be one of Johnson's best tracks. So, will JJ add himself to the short list of drivers with two wins in 2014 just one week after getting his first?

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Jimmie Johnson- Any Dover list that doesn't have JJ on it may not be a list you want to trust. JJ has 8 top 10's here in hi last 10 including 7 top 5's and 5 wins. JJ, as always, will be a favorite at Dover.
  • Kyle Busch- In his last 8 starts here he has 7 top 10's, 4 of them being top 5's and one win. The only time in that 8 race stretch he didn't finish in the top 10 he had engine issues and he finished 29th.
  • Matt Kenseth- In the last 10 races here only 5 drivers drivers not named Jimmie Johnson have a win, Kenseth is one of them. In his last 10 here he has 7 top 10's. 6 top 5's, and that 1 win. Two of his last three starts here have been rough, but that shouldn't be the case.
  • Extra Credit- Kevin Harvick
The Middle
  • Clint Bowyer- Bowyer has a 6 races top 10 streak at Dover, so he could be considered in the Good category, yet only one of those finishes was a top 5. He could have a good finish, but will he be able to contend for a win or just another top 10?
The Bad
  • Jamie McMurray- JMac doesn't have a single top 10 in his last 10 starts here, that's not a trend he will want to continue. Case for McMurray: four of his last 10 were at least top 15 finishes, but if you are looking for him in the top 10 it isn't likely.
  • Denny Hamlin- Bad luck or bad runs, no matter how you look at it DH only has 3 top 10's in his last 10 here. In fact, in his last 6 Dover starts he only has 1 top 10 (8th).
  • Paul Menard- One top 10 in his last 10 starts here, Menard also only has 1 top 15 in that same time frame. Menard seems to be on this list a lot for these middle of the season races.
Track Stats
  • Richard Petty won the first 3 of 4 races at Dover, including the first two in 1969 and 1970.
  • The race has been won from the Pole 13 times.
  • Kyle Petty won after starting 37th in 1995, the furthest back a Dover race has been won.
  • Toyota hasn't won a Dover race since 2010 (Kyle Busch), or 7 races. Dodge has won twice since then.
  • The most cautions was 16 in 1993, Rusty Wallace eventually won the race.
  • Current drivers with more then 1 Dover win (Jimmie Johnson-8, Jeff Gordon-4, Ryan Newman-3, Tony Stewart-3, Kyle Busch-2, Matt Kenseth-2, and Greg Biffle 2).
  • Current drivers with one Dover win (Brad Keselowski, Bobby Labonte, Martin Truex Jr, Carl Edwards, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kurt Busch, and Jeff Burton).

Week 12 Preview: Charlotte

Charlotte Motor Speedway

Coca-Cola 600

By Richard Tix

NASCAR's All-Star weekend started with a bang after finding out the Reddit Dogecoin community had helped get Josh Wise into the Sprint All-Star Race via the fan vote. Once the action got going Clint Bowyer and AJ Allmendinger raced there way into the All Star Race on Friday Night.

Saturday nights All-Star race was pretty entertaining. As always qualifying this year was fun and kept the fans into it. The racing on Saturday night was fast paced and provided action with a few crashes. In the end Jamie McMurray crept up on everyone and stole the last 10 lap segment to win the All-Star Race. The All-Star Race not only is a fun race, but it gives us a little insight into how the 600 could possibly play out this weekend. Lets take a look at how some drivers have done in the past at Charlotte Motor Speedway. If you are looking for some Fantasy Advice head over to ThisSportz

Want a blast from the past, well maybe just back to last year? Check out the Charlotte Preview and Review from 2013.

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)
**Stats do not include the All-Star Race**

The Good
  • Kasey Kahne- Four wins in 20 career races at CMS is good enough to give Kahne the second best career average finish of current drivers (11.4). He also has 5 straight top 10's with 4 of those being top 5's (1 win).
  • Kyle Busch- In the last 10 races at Charlotte no one has more top 10's then Rowdy's 8. Not only that, but the 2 races that he did not finish top 10 in he had an engine problem and got involved in a wreck. Unfortunatly he has yet to win at Charlotte in 20 tries even though he normally runs very well here.
  • Denny Hamlin- DH has 7 straight top 10's with 4 of them top 5's, yet he still doesnt have a win at Charlotte. He has proven he can run fast at Charlotte but can he finally show he can win here?
  • Extra Credit: Joey Logano
The Middle
  • Jimmie Johnson- If we made this list 6 years ago you would be crazy to not have JJ in the Good category, back then he had 5 wins during a stretch of 11 top 10's (8 of them top 5's). But, as of late he hasn't been his dominant self at Charlotte with only 3 top 10's in his last 8 tries. If I know JJ, he has great odds to get back to his dominant self here.
The Bad
  • Brain Vickers- In his last 4 races he has yet to finish in the top 15 and in his career he has 3 top 10's (15 starts). His average finish of 23rd leaves a lot to be desired at Charlotte.
  • Paul Menard- 14 starts and Menard has only managed 1 top 10 (2010) at Charlotte. In fact, Menard only has 4 top 15 finishes in that same time frame. Whats even more concerning, he only has 4 top 20 finishes in those 14 starts.
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr- Well Jr doesn't find himself on the Bad list very often, but his terrible 5 race stretch from 2008-2010 still haunts him. In his last to starts he only has 2 top 10's, 3 top 15's, and 4 top 20's. The good thing, all of those stats have been accumulated in his last 5 starts at Charlotte.
Track Stats
  • The last time someone won a Charlotte race from the Pole not named Jimmie Johnson was 1998, Jeff Gordon. JJ has won 2 from the Pole since then (2004 and 2009).
  • JJ won 4 straight from 2004 to 2005, sweeping both times. Four straight is also a track Cup record.
  • In that same stretch he won 5 of 6 from 2003-2005 dropping the only race to Tony Stewart.
  • The most cautions was 22 during the 2005 May Charlotte race, which JJ ended up winning.

Week 11 Preview: Kansas

Kansas Speedway

Richard Tix

Well Talladega was Talladega. Meaning a lot of crazy and strange things happened that don't need an explanation except that NASCAR was at Talladega for the weekend. Lots of people are talking about crashes and a questionable late caution to end the race. One thing remains, Denny Hamlin won at Talladega after starting out 2014 on a disappointing note.

Now Denny has the time to figure things out as he is most likely in the 2014 Sprint Cup Chase. Past Hamlin winning a lot of top drivers with good cars fell victim to Talladega wrecks along the way. This week NASCAR heads to Kansas Speedway for some more Saturday night racing and some of these drivers will be looking to get back on track.

So, lets get into the section where we take a look at some resent driver results at Kansas Speedway in The Good, Middle, and Bad. Also, if you like looking back, here is the Kansas Preview and Review from last year in Behind the Wall.

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Jimmie Johnson- JJ has 15 starts at Kansas and only twice has he finished outside the top 10. he also has 2 wins (tied with 4 other drivers (Gordon, Biffle, Kenseth, and Stewart)) and 6 top 5's. On top of that, he shows often that he is fast while out front and has won 3 career poles here.
  • Matt Kenseth- Well, in the last 5 races at Kansas he might have the best track record. Kenseth has 2 wins, 4 top 5's, and 4 top 10's. His lone non top 10 was an 11th place finish here last time around. Only JJ rivals him in the last 5 with 5 top 10's but only 1 win.
  • Kevin Harvick- His career at Kansas didn't start off amazing, but he has 6 top 10's in his last 10 starts. 1 win, 3 top 5's, and 6 top 6's. Yes that was typed right, all of his top 10's were one spot off of a top 5.
The Middle
  • Greg Biffle: He has 2 career wins at Kansas but lately he has been shaky. In his last three at Kansas he has a best finish of 13th, but all the races before that he has a long list of top 10's. One thing in his favor, he has been racing well in the last few races of 2014, so expect a good finish.
  • Extra Credit: Tony Stewart
The Bad
  • Kyle Busch- Kyles Busch'es struggles are well documented at Kansas. His last three finishes have produced 34, 38, and 31 place finishes. In 13 races he only has two top 10s.
  • Joey Logano- Before the last Kansas race, JoLo had zero top 10's in 8 tries. Last time around JoLo notched a 4th place finish so things are looking up. Both drivers in the Bad category so far (He and Kyle) have talent and can find speed, it will just be if they put it together here,
  • Danica Patrick- 2 of her 3 starts here have resulted in crashes. So watch out if here and Kyle Busch get near each other. She did finish 25th in the one race she didn't run into trouble, so a top 25 isn't out of the question.
Track Stats
  • Kansas has 11 different career winners in 16 Cup races.
  • 5 drivers are tied for most wins with 2. Gordon, Stewart, Biffle, Johnson, and Kenseth.
  • In 2011 Kansas started to have two races a year.
  • A Kansas race has been won from the Pole two straight times (Harvick and Kenseth) and 4 times total.
  • Manufacture win count: Chevy 8, Ford 4, Toyota 2, and Dodge 2.
  • Brad Keselowski won after starting 25th in 2011, the furthest back a winner has come from.
  • Jimmie Johnson has the most career laps lead (562) with Kenseth in second (500).
  • JJ and Kahne are tied for most career Poles at Kansas (3).
  • Jeff Gordon has run the most career laps at Kansas (4180) with Harvick in second (4110).
  • Most cautions in a Kansas race was last year in the Fall Chase race (15).

Week 10 Preview: Talladega

Talladega Superspeedway

Aaron's 499

By Richard Tix

Richmond International Speedway gave NASCAR fans some fireworks! Literally we got to see some fire a few times with right front tires going down all night. Fans also got to see a little smoke when Brad Keselowski got upset after the race and may have let his emotions get the best of him (I will still argue that driver should let it out, right or wrong).

Also on Saturday fans got a UFC bout (no not the Jon "Bones" Jones fight) but the one between Ambrose and Mears.

Now NASCAR heads to Talladega for the first time in 2014. Dega is not the kind of track drivers look to get back at others at, so we should see some cool down in that aspect, but plate racing still brings out the best (or worst) in people. New tempers may fire and guys may find tough luck. Dega also brings a sense of excitment because this is a track where the little guy always seems to have a shot.

So, will a small team steal a win and create a story line for the remaining regular season? This Sunday we will find out. Want to go back in time? Check out last years Preview and Review, also check out the old Tweets of the Week from Dega week.

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good:
  • Clint Bowyer- His last three have been a little up and down, but before that he Bowyer had 5 straight top 10's, with two wins and a runner up finish. To go with that, he has the best average finish of any driver who has run the last 10 races here (11.9).
  • Brad Keselowski- Its only fitting that BK makes this list, after all his first career Cup win was at Dega. I will note, last year BK did not have good finishes here, but none of 2013 went BK's way. He and Clint Bowyer are the only two drivers to have 6 top 10's in the last 10 races here, two of which are wins.
  • David Ragan- Yes, Ragan had the improbable win last year at Talladega during the Spring, but no that is not the only reason he is on this list. He also has a run of 4 straight top 10's, two of which are top 5's. In his last 10 starts he has 5 top 10's, not bad for a little guy.
  • Extra Credit- Ricky Stenhouse Jr
The Middle:
  • Aric Almirola- Really, this spot belongs to just about every Cup driver. Dega is so unpredictable it is tough just looking at finishing position. But NBTW will go with Aric this week with career finishes of 20th, 12th, 19th, 10th, and 22nd. Last time here, during the Chase, Aric ended up starting the race 1st.
  • Extra Credit: Almost everyone fits in this category
The Bad (or this week, the bad luck category)
  • Paul Menard- One way or another, Paul Menard just cant seem to finish in the top ten by the end of a Talladega race. In his last ten starts he has one top 10. I will say this for every driver, this is just the nature of the beast so finding yourself on the bad list this week isn't near as bad as most.
  • Denny Hamlin- His last two finishes at Dega have not been pretty. The first time around he finished 34th and the second time he had engine issues and finished 38th. DH will look to bounce back from his bad luck this week. Only 3 top 10's in his last 10 starts here.
  • Marcus Ambrose- One top 10 in his last 10, and that was 10 races ago (4th). Since then he has only two finishes inside the top 15 and only 3 inside the top 20 (last 9 races). Bad luck or whatever, its hard to say he will be near the top 10 when the checkered flag falls.

Week 9 Preview: Richmond

Richmond International Raceway

Toyota Owners 400

By Richard Tix

Heading into Richmond NASCAR comes off its first bye week of the season. I hope everyone is making it through this rough time, but at least we had a weekend were we could relax, some of us celebrating Easter, some just spending time with family, and others just getting some Spring yard work done (what I heard through Twitter NASCAR fans were doing this past week).

No matter how you spent the NASCAR bye week we can all say we are ready for racing to be back! This week NASCAR heads to Richmond and after 8 races Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Matt Kenseth are all win less. Maybe this is the week one gets off the streak? Lets take a look at who has run well in the last few years at Richmond in the Good, Middle, and Bad.

Check out last years Preview and Review of the first Richmond International Raceway stop on NASCAR's schedule.

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good
  • Kyle Busch- Any RIR list should include Rowdy, no matter if you are looking at past results, fantasy value, or future potential. In 18 races he has finished top 10 13 times, with 12 top 5,s and 4 wins. All 4 of those wins have come in his last 10 races. Do note, his last 3 starts are finishes of 19, 24, and 16th. But fear not, he should get back on top.
  • Carl Edwards- In his last 10 races at RIR he has 7 top 10's, 4 top 5's and a win last year in the last race before the Chase. His career average finish of 9.7 is 3rd best of current drivers.
  • Denny Hamlin- DH has 9 top 10's in his 15 career starts at RIR. 7 of those were top 5's and 2 were wins. DH is in the same category at Rowdy, he is very good here but his last 2 finishes have left something to be desired (21st and 18th).
  • Extra Credit: Kevin Harvick
The Middle
  • Ryan Newman- Newman has 6 top 10's in his last 10 starts at RIR but only two of them have resulted in top 5's and none of them turned into wins. The other four finishes are 11th, 15th, 15th, and 20th. So he hasn't been bad here lately, but he hasn't been spot on either.
  • Extra Credit: Tony Stewart
The Bad:
  • Danica Patrick- True, Danica only has one season under her belt and two total races at RIR, but both came with almost the same result. Her two finishes here are 29th and 30th place. If she keeps her car clean she could end up top 25 otherwise look for another 30th place finish.
  • Paul Menard- In the last 10 races at RIR Menard has one top 10 with an average finish of 23.6. So, he hasn't been very good here, but there is a bright side with him. That top 10, was actually a top 5 and it was his last time at RIR. Also, his average finish in his last 4 here is 13.5 (he has two 13th place finishes and a 23rd to go with that 5th place finish last time here).
  • Brian Vickers- I don't expect BV to actually run poor this time around at RIR, but simple fact is, in his last 10 starts he has run poor here. In fact, his last 3 finishes have been 24th, 35th, and 33rd. I think the last two on the bad list do have a shot this season as decent finishes, but this section is about past history. If you want more from the fantasy side, head on over to ThisSportz. They have you covered every week on Fantasy advice and another view of the Power Rankings.
Track Stats:
  • Richard Petty once won 7 RIR races in a row, 9 of 10, and 12 of 17. All were from 1967 to 1975.
  • Last year Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards won from the 17th and 26th positions.
  • Toyota has won 7 of the last 10 races at RIR but didn't win once in the two trips last year.
  • Michael Waltrip has 45 career starts at RIR and no wins or top 5's. He does have two career top 10's though.
  • In 42 tries, Jeff Gordon has 6 total career Poles at RIR. He also has 2 wins, 16 top 5's and 26 to 10's.
  • With 18 career starts at RIR, Kyle Busch has the best active career average finish at 7.2. He also has 13 career top 10's, 12 of which are top 5's.

Week 5 Preview: Auto Club

Auto Club Speedway
Auto Club 400

By Richard Tix

NASCAR finished its fourth race of the 2014 season at Bristol and left with its fourth different race winner. Carl Edwards won the race and put his name out there early as a Chase contender (and almost a virtual lock for the Chase in general). NASCAR fans once again had a long rain delay to sit through (two in fact), but NASCAR got the race in. As it turned out, the wait was worth it as fans got a pretty solid race. Unfortunately a ton of strong cars had problems throughout the race which left us with less contenders for the win. Now we move on to Fontana, CA for our fifth race of 2014.

Last year the trip to Fontana left nothing on the table. NASCAR fans got just about everything they wanted (and some things they didn't want, Denny Hamlin getting hurt). Either way it was one of the most exciting races of the 2013 season. Maybe when Denny gets to the track and some old memories come back he will seek out Joey Logano, or maybe we will have a typical Fontana race (The Auto Club Incident). Lets take a look at who has a chance to be up front, and who might fall behind. Here is last years Preview and Review of the Auto Club 400. The Review is pretty good if you want a refresher on the DH vs JoLo rivalry.

The Good, Middle, and Bad
(This is just a review of each drivers recent past performance, generally about 5-10 past races)

The Good:
  • Kevin Harvick- Harvick has 5 top 10's in the last 6 races at Auto Club, including a win. His only non top 10 was a 13th place finish this past season. Actually in his last 9 races here he has 7 top 10's.
  • Tony Stewart- In the last four seasons, Smoke has 2 wins at Auto Club. On top of that in his last 14 races here he has 9 top 10's. It's been a slow start in 2014, but Smoke is coming off his top 5. Look for him to finish up front at the end of the day.
  • Jimmie Johnson- JJ shows up again, I am thinking about just excluding him from the running soon. The fact is, in 19 career races here, he has 5 wins, 12 top 5's, and 14 top 10's.  His career average finish is 5.7, wow.
The Middle:
  • Ryan Newman- He has finished top 10 about 42% of the time he has been here (8 or 19). That isn't great, but he gets this spot because he has 4 straight top 10's to his name.
The Bad:
  • Brad Keselowski- BK has only run here 5 times, but all 5 have resulted in 0 wins, 0 top 5's, and 0 top 10's. In fact, he only has one top 20 which was in 2012. He did start from the 3rd spot last season, so there's that. Of all the drivers in this category, he is the top one to turn it around.
  • Paul Menards- 11 tries and only one top 10. Not exactly what you are looking for when heading to a track. The up side, that top 10 was just last year.
  • Marcus Ambrose- 8 tries and zero, ZERO top 10's for Marcus. Apparently he really hates going left at Auto Club. He has an average finish of 28.8 here, which is really really bad.
Track Stats:
  • Only Jeremy Mayfield and Rusty Wallace are winners here at Auto Club that are not still running (Also, Elliot Sadler is not running full time Cup, to add to the list).
  • Manufacturer wins here go Chevy 12, Ford 10, Toyota 1, and Dodge 1.
  • Jimmie Johnson is the only driver to win two times in a row here (2009 and 2010).
  • Only Jimmie Johnson has won from the Pole in 2008 (24 total races)
  • Most career wins here: Jimmie Johnson 5, Jeff Gordon 3, and Matt Kenseth 3
  • Most Poles: Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch tied with 3
  • Most Laps Lead in Career: Jimmie Johnson 851 during 19 races.
  • Ken Schrader ran 17 races here without a top 10. Highest finish was 14th, twice.
Well that's all for this Preview folks. Check back after the race for an updated Power Rankings! And as always, let me know what you think on Twitter! Who is going to run well?

Week 3 Preview: Las Vegas

Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Kolbalt 400

By Richard Tix

NASCAR's third race of the 2014 season will be in Las Vegas. With drivers seeing how much pressure is eased once you get a win in 2014 how many of them will be willing to gamble in sin city?

So far, we have had some good racing to start the year. The new race package that NASCAR released this year has seemed to be a step up from last year so far. The end of Phoenix had some exciting moments but most of those came from 2nd on back, which is all Kevin Harvicks fault for being so good.

Last year Matt Kenseth got his first win of many on the season at Las Vegas. After Kevin Harvick did that just last week at Phoenix with his new team SHR, maybe he will continue that success onto Vegas.

Take a look back at NASCAR Behind the Wall's 2013 Preview and Review from Las Vegas. Also, check out the most recent Power Rankings after Phoenix.

(The Good, Middle, and Bad is not a prediction on how drivers will do, but rather an idea of how they have done in the past/recent races)

The Good:
  • Carl Edwards- In the last 5 races at Las Vegas Carl has the best Average finish (8.0) of current drivers. He has a win and 3 top 5's in that same stretch. His last 3 finishes go a little like this, 5th, 5th, and 1st.
  • Tony Stewart- Even though Smoke is know for his summer run, he has been good at Vegas in his last 5. He is second only to Carl in Average finish and has a win, 2 top 5's, and 3 top 10's (his last finish was 11th in 2013).
  • Jimmie Johnson- JJ also has a win here in his last 5, in fact the last five winner have all been different drivers (no multi-time winner).
The Middle:
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr- Well Jr could be considered for the good category but we only choose 3 here at NASCAR Behind the Wall. So to get his stats mentioned, he ended up here in the middle. In the last 5 races here he is the only driver with 4 top 10's, but at the same time he doesn't have a single top 5. He is on a great start to the 2014 season so maybe he will break the top 5 this time around.
The Bad:
  • Kurt Busch- Outlaw has one top 10 in his last 5 starts in Vegas, so it seems his gambling ways havent worked out here. Actually his last top 5 was in 2005 and he only has 3 career top 10's in 13 races. We wont mention how much he has struggled to start 2014, he needs this race.
  • Brad Keselowski- He may have turned a corner in 2013 at Vegas as he won the Pole and finished 3rd but before that his finishes were 32nd, 26th, 26th, and 38th. After a hot start to 2014 look for something closer to that 3rd place finish to get out of this category.
  • Aric Almirola- He is new to Vegas (only 4 starts) but he hasn't faired too well here. His finishes (from first start to last) are 39th, 43rd, 24th, and 16th are nothing to look at. However, he has been getting better each time, maybe he can turn it around here in 2014?
Track Stats:
  • In the last 5 races (since 2008) Vegas has not had a Multi-Time winner.
