2017 NASCAR Pit Road Week 16: Sonoma

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Sonoma Thoughts:

No Late Caution
  • Just one week after what seemed like a phantom debris caution at MIS, the end of Sonoma looked to be in a spot where NASCAR might have a quick trigger finger for a yellow. Kevin Harvick was out front pretty easily and only had a small shot at not finishing (fuel). To NASCAR's credit, they didn't find a crazy reason to throw a yellow and instead it finished as expected (a yellow did fly right around when Harvick was about to cross the S/F).
Road Courses Still Equal Fun
  • Road Courses being a fan favorite has become the norm in 2017. On Jeff Gluck's "Was it a good race" twitter poll Sonoma got an overwhelming 78% yes which is normal for a road course week. What is a bit crazy is if a finish like we had on Sunday (Harvick way out front and winning after a yellow came out on the final lap), happened at a 1.5 mile track the poll results most likely would have flip flopped a bunch. I understand much of that is also the racing action during the meat of the race, but it is still interesting to note. I am part of the "more road course" crowd (and the "real road course, not roval" crowd), but I don't want them over saturated either. Another stop or two at most in place of a 1.5 would work for me, plus add in some more short tracks....
No Surprise Winner
  • To be fair, Watkins Glenn is where AJ Allmendinger really has excelled and where we get more "surprise" winners, but guys like Logano, Kenseth, and Bowyer can take a deep breath knowing AJ didn't win. Harvick winning was almost a lock and even without a win he was the highest in points (without a win), so his trip to VL posses no threat to the non win drivers for the most part. Up next is Daytona which has been arguably an even bigger wild card race than Sonoma has so everyone will be trying out any strategy necessary to win.

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 16 (Week 15)
  1. Martin Truex Jr (LW-1)- After a blown engine the end result wasn't what he wanted, but before it blew up on him Truex was a top contender to beat on Sunday.
  2. Kyle Busch (LW-3)- Zero wins makes it tough to put Rowdy right behind Truex, but he does have three straight top tens and six top tens in his last seven. A win is coming for this team soon if they can stop losing CC's.
  3. Kevin Harvick (LW-4)- I said it for about three weeks, then didn't say it last week in the power rankings: "a win is coming for this team." Well, it finally came Sunday at Sonoma. "Happy" has lead at least ten laps in nine of sixteen races this season.
  4. Kyle Larson (LW-2)- After taking the pole, Sunday didn't exactly go Larson's way at Sonoma. Even after a poor day, he actually kept the top spot in the standings from Truex Jr who also had late issues.
  5. Chase Elliott (LW-9)- Chase is starting to surge again after a lull from races nine to twelve. He is starting to consistently run in the top ten again, but will still need to close a race out (restarts, pit stops, CC strategy) if he wants to win before the playoffs.
  6. Jamie McMurray (LW-5)- Consistency king, JMac is tied for third for most top tens (ten top tens, two driver have eleven). Three more top tens and he will match his best in a season other than the lone season he had 23 (2004).
  7. Jimmie Johnson (LW-6)- 3, 3, and 6. That is JJ's wins, top fives, and top tens in 2017. He is perfectly safe, but one has to think they would want to rack up some more playoff points at some point while Truex keeps knocking them off.
  8. Denny Hamlin (LW-7)- Another JGR car starting to come to life as of late. Slowly, the 11 is starting to catch the pack. Sonoma was his second straight 4th place finish and his fourth top ten in five races.
  9. Brad Keselowski (LW-10)- BK got back on track on Sunday after finishing 3rd in a car that looked like it was just part of the county fair demo derby.
  10. Ryan Blaney (LW-11)- Blaney had a pretty solid run at Sonoma for only his second Cup start here. He started 7th and finished 9th and picked up 39 points which was good for fourth most.
  11. Kurt Busch (LW-NR)- Kurt is on the every other race top ten streak. The good: Sonoma was a top ten week. The bad: Daytona is on a non top ten week....
  12. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-NR)- He's back. It's been awhile since Junior cracked the top 12 on NBTW, but after his second top ten in a row he will grace the very bottom as we head to one of his best tracks, Daytona.
Dropped Out: Matt Kenseth (LW-8) and Erik Jones (LW-12)
Just Missed: Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano, and Ryan Newman

15 down, 11 to go. 11 more races until the NASCAR Playoffs get started. This weekend is as important as any for drivers still looking to lock in a spot in the top 16. Road courses open up opportunities for a few drivers to peak into the spotlight for a bit, but will it end up with a surprise trip to Victory Lane? The odds are we won't see a crazy winner, but you never know. So, buckle up and get ready for this weekend at Sonoma. Take a look at a few things worth following this weekend.

What to watch for?

Will Truex Jr. or Larson create some separation in the points?
  • Only five points separate the 42 and 78 (42 with the lead) heading into Sonoma. Both drivers have been the head of the field in 2017 and will look to keep it going. Truex Jr. has recently won here (2013) and Larson has steadily shown improvement (28th, 15th, and then 12th). The perfect storm could be coming if these two can battle for the lead late on Sunday.
The battle for 16th place in the standings
  • The battle for number one isn't the only one to watch. "But if you're not first, you're last!" (pipe down in the back Ricky Bobby) As it stands right now, Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth are in a tie for the 16th spot with Bowyer just missing the cut. Even though it is for 15th and 16th (not 16th and 17th), it will be fun to watch two drivers with a past history try and stay off the bubble spot at number 16.
Can AJ Allmendinger tame Sonoma?
  • Allmendinger's name is always the first one brought up when NASCAR heads to road course and for good reason as he has won at Watkins Glenn (Cup), Elkhart Lake (Xfinity), and Mid-Ohio (Xfinity). However, Sonoma hasn't been his track yet at the Cup level. AJ has managed a pole and two other front row starts in his last three races here, but the finishes haven't come as easy. With the Playoffs quickly coming up on the horizon, it is go time for the No. 47 team this weekend.

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good
  • Kyle Busch- Rowdy has back to back top tens here at Sonoma including a win in 2015. He also runs really well at Watkins Glenn, so he know hows to wheel it to the left and right.
  • Clint Bowyer- Eight top tens in eleven career starts at Sonoma. Bowyer also has a win here in 2012. Bowyer could really use a win as he sits 17th in points right now.
  • Martin Truex Jr- Truex won here back in 2013, had a couple rough finishes, and then finished fifth last season.
The Middle
  • Jimmie Johnson- When you think of JJ you don't normally think of road course racing, but he actually has fared really well here at Sonoma. In his last eight starts here he has seven top tens, three top fives, and a win (2010).
The Bad
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr- Ricky only has one top 20 in his first four career starts here at Sonoma. He also has the same amount of top 25's, not, good.
  • Denny Hamlin- Last year Hamlin finished second, but before that he had zero top 15's in his previous six races and only one top 20.
  • Matt Kenseth- 17 career Sonoma starts and one top ten, Kenseth's struggles here have been well documented. His last top 15 was 2012.
About the Track: Sonoma
Track Stats
  • 18 total drivers have won a Cup race at Sonoma. Only six have multiple wins (Gordon, Stewart, Busch, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, and Ernie Ervan).
  • Of those six, two have more than two wins (Jeff Gordon- 5 and Tony Stewart- 3)
  • Gordon also has the most top 5's (14) and top 10's (18) in a career
  • Gordon has the most career poles (5) and Ricky Rudd the second most (4)
  • Gordon has the best career average finish (8.3) followed by Dale Earnhardt (8.6)
  • Rusty Wallace had an average start position of 6.9 over 17 career starts
  • Sonoma has been won by the Pole 5 times in 28 Cup races
  • The last Pole win was 2004- Jeff Gordon (11 races ago)

2016 NASCAR Pit Road Week 16: Sonoma

Weekly Review and Power Ranking

Eighty Four races. For a driver who had won 48 career NASCAR Cup races in his career, eighty four races without a win must have felt like a lifetime. From the fan's perspective it felt like it was ages ago that we got to witness an upbeat Tony Stewart in Victory Lane, so it must have felt even better to be Smoke on Sunday.

After multiple injuries, personal turmoil, and social beating and battering, Smoke finally rose for at least a moment at Sonoma Raceway.

Stewart made an early pit during the last set of stops because he was losing ground on a long run. Just when it looked like he was down and out because of the pit strategy luck turned around when Michael McDowell's car stalled out and NASCAR threw a caution.

The yellow left Stewart with pretty fresh tires and the lead with 14 to go, which was a spot Smoke hadn't been in in quite some time.

To most NASCAR fans it was a sight to see. Even non Stewart fans started to focus in on what could be his winless streak coming to an end and some even turned into his cheer section. Stewart spent the next 14 laps battling off Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin, and what seemed to be all of Toyota.

After running nearly perfect and depending all the key passing spots on Sonoma, Stewart finally gave Hamlin an inch when he wheel hopped turn 7 with two laps to go. Fortunately for Stewart Hamlin couldn't take full advantage and still trailed him.

When it happened again on the final lap Stewart eventually gave the lead up to Hamlin and hope seemed to start to disappear. Everyone knew Stewart would do anything it took, but with Hamlin in defense mode would it be enough?

Turn 11 came and went in a matter of seconds, but the turn and that moment will forever stick in NASCAR fan's minds. Denny Hamlin missed his mark, came in too hard and missed the inside line leaving the door wide open for Smoke to get his nose into the corner and into Hamlin's side.

From there it was classic Tony Stewart not giving an inch and taking the win while beating Hamlin's door around the corner.

Win number 49 was well worth the wait, though I'm sure if you ask Smoke he would rather have had 10 wins in that time. Stewart added his name to the list of 2016 winners and now only has to make up nine, yes only nine, points to take over 30th place in the standings.

In his last season fans may get their wish and see Tony Stewart in the 2016 Chase. Toyota Save Mart 350 Race Results.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 16 (Week 15)
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-1)- Not a huge threat on the day, Harvick was still up front consistently with an average running position of 10th. Finish: 6th
  2. Kurt Busch (LW-2)- Ten straight top 10's, when will Kurt get a bit more credit for how consistent he is this season? He ran inside the top 10 most of the day at Sonoma. Finish: 10th
  3. Joey Logano (LW-4)- Other than Tony Stewart, JoLo was the only ones to cut into Toyota's big day at the front. Late in the race Joey made some charging moves, but only enough to stick in the top 5. Finish: 3rd
  4. Carl Edwards (LW-7)- Carl started on the Pole and had what looked like a winning car early and often (leading 24 laps). In the end he couldn't get past Hamlin and Truex to really contend (though he did finally pass Truex). Finish: 4th
  5. Chase Elliott (LW-3)- The rookie gets a pass for Sonoma. It's no easy task coming to Sonoma as a rookie, but Chase kept it clean all day. Plus, he had six straight top tens coming into Sundays road course. Finish: 21st
  6. Martin Truex Jr (LW-9)- Truex is a past Sonoma winner and he showed it Sunday. Before Hamlin charged at Stewart it was Martin trying to make his move. Finish: 5th
  7. Brad Keselowski (LW-5)- Quiet day for BK. In fact, considering it was Sonoma he didn't run very well for most of the race. Finish: 15th
  8. Kyle Larson (LW-8)- Larson ran a ton of the race up front until he had trouble on pit road late. He still bounced back for a nice finish and continues his strong mid season surge. Finish: 12th
  9. Matt Kenseth (LW-6)- Sonoma is one to forget for Kenseth, but when isn't it? In his career Sonoma has been a tough place for Kenseth to gain control of. Finish: 20th
  10. Kyle Busch (LW-12)- Sunday at Sonoma was finally a step in the right direction for Rowdy. After a string of bad luck Kyle finally had a good race start to finish. Even though it wasn't enough it could be the start of another hot streak. Finish: 7th
  11. Jimmie Johnson (LW-10)- Not a ton to say about JJ's day at Sonoma. Overall it was an average day with an average finish with JJ just being average. Look for a bounce back at Daytona. Finish: 13th
  12. Tony Stewart (LW-NR)- Poor Newman, he drops out after finishing 8th, but this isn't about Newman. I couldn't let this spot pass by without having Smoke be apart of the rankings again. It wasn't just for the win, but it is also back to back top 10's (7th at Michigan). Finish: 1st
Dropped Out: Ryan Newman (LW-12)
Just Missed: Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne, and Dale Earnhardt Jr

2016 NASCAR Week 16 Preview: Sonoma

Toyota / Save Mart 350

Sonoma Raceway

By Richard Tix

NASCAR gets a week off this season for fathers day so all the drivers can enjoy some time away from the track (some will and some won't). No matter what the 40 drivers do, they won't be running in a Sprint Cup points race until we get to Sonoma Raceway.

Sonoma will provide the first chance for a driver to shake up the Chase outlook. Sure, any given week any driver can win a race, but most weeks that driver will come from a top 16 driver anyways. But, tracks like Sonoma and Watkin's Glen, plus superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega, give underdogs a real shot. Two years ago it was A.J. Allmendinger at WG and this year it could be anyone.

Maybe Tony Stewart can use his great MIS finish to gain speed towards the Chase with a Sonoma win? He has won here and road courses are the great equalizer.

However, in recent years the "ringer" drivers have been left in the dust and Cup regulars have started to focus more on these two tracks especially given the Chase circumstances.

So, will someone make a bid to splash the Chase party with a trip to victory lane at Sonoma? Or will business go on as usual?

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good

  • Kurt Busch- In Kurt Busch's last five races at Sonoma he has been a front runner. He has a win and four top 5's in that time. Coming into Sonoma during a 2016 where he has been one of the most consistent drivers means he should factor into Sundays race.
  • Clint Bowyer- It will be a one year stint for Bowyer with HScott, but he has a shot to have one of his better runs of the year at Sonoma. Clint has a win, four top 5's, and five top 10's in the last five races.
  • Carl Edwards- The 2014 Sonoma winner, Carl got caught up in a wreck last year and finished 40th. He should bounce back this year and brings back to back quality runs at Michigan and Pocono to Sonoma.
The Middle
  • Kasey Kahne- Kasey Kahne actually has three straight top 10's at Sonoma coming into week 16. Over his last five races he has an average finish of 10.8.
The Bad
  • Denny Hamlin- Hamlins last five races at Sonoma Raceway havent yielded pretty results. IN fact, in that time he hasn't finished in the top 15 once. To top that off he only has one top 20 in the last five races.
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr- As I said last year in this preview, Ricky has a small sample size at Sonoma to really judge. He led those comments up with a 20th place finish. On the outside that looks like a poor result, but it was actually his best finish in three attempts.
  • Matt Kenseth- Another JGR driver who has struggled at Sonoma lately, Kenseth and Hamlin look to get things turned around this year. He only has two top 15's in his last five Sonoma races.

About the Track: Sonoma
Track Stats

  • 9 current drivers have a win at Sonoma. However, only two have multiple wins (Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart).
  • 18 total drivers have won a Cup race at Sonoma. Only six have multiple wins (Gordon, Stewart, Busch, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, and Ernie Ervan).
  • Of those six, only one has more than 2 wins (Jeff Gordon- 5)

  • Gordon has the best career average finish (8.3) followed by Dale Earnhardt (8.6)
  • Rusty Wallace had an average start position of 6.9 over 17 career starts
  • A Chevy has only won once (2010- Johnson) in the last 9 races. Dodge has won three times since then and has been out of the sport since after 2012.
  • Before that, Chevy had won 7 of 9 races.
  • Sonoma has been won by the Pole 5 times in 27 Cup races
  • The last Pole win was 2004- Jeff Gordon (11 races ago)

2015 Sonoma Schedule

Toyota Save Mart 350

By Richard Tix

It is an off week for everyone but the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Cup heads West this weekend after taking Father's Day weekend off. Not only do we head West, but we head West to the land of right turns at Sonoma Raceway.

This weekend will be a huge week for any driver without a win in 2015 and also those underdogs who's best shot at a win come at a road course. Sonoma is a track where many people see a possible "upset" winner coming from and crashing in on the 2015 Chase party.

So will it happen? Check out all the times you can check out the Cup cars on the track:

2015 Week 16 Preview: Sonoma

Toyota Save Mart 350

Sonoma Raceway

By Richard Tix

This weekend the Sprint Cup Series takes a week of rest as the head out to the West Coast to make a few right turns at Sonoma. Sonoma will up the pressure for some win-less drivers in 2015 as this race could put them in the Chase.

Different then most tracks, even the underdogs think they have a shot at a road course win. This simple fact makes racing that much more exciting, not to mention that road course's in general have been growing within the NASCAR fan base.

So, the big question will be, will someone steal a win at Sonoma and lock in a Chase spot? If someone does, it not only locks in a Chase spot for that driver but narrows down the spots that will be left for drivers trying to get in on points.

Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart both need wins in 2015 and both have been great here. Clint Bowyer is also another driver who has run well at Sonoma and is win-less on the season. Newman, Biffle, and Allmendinger (2014 Watkins Glen winner) all could have good days too, but will it be enough?

The Good
  • Jeff Gordon- Unless he finds bad luck or a crash, mark Gordon down for a top 10. He has 9 straight top 10's here which includes 1 win, 3 runner up finishes, and 6 top 5's. Plus he has 18 top 10's in 22 career starts at Sonoma.
  • Clint Bowyer- Bowyer has four straight top 10's here even through the last two years in which he has struggled on the season overall. He won back in 2012 and has 7 top 10's in 9 career starts.
  • Jimmie Johnson- Speaking of top 10 streaks, JJ is going 6 strong at Sonoma. In that time he also has a win (2010) and 3 top 10's. Not many people thing JJ and road course, but he has held his own here.
The Middle
  • Ryan Newman- Crazy stat of the day: In 13 starts Newman has a 12.9 average finish, yet only 5 top 10's. Crazy. Finishing in the top 10 less than 50% of the time yet an average finish under 13. That just shows how consistent he is, but he might not push for a win. If you look at his recent results he has been trending towards the "Bad" category that falls below.
The Bad
  • David Ragan- In 8 career starts at Sonoma Ragan has only managed two top 25. Obviously much of his career has been in a underfunded car, but he needs to start finiding more top 30's and top 25's.
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr- Small sample size, but Ricky's first two finishes here were about as good looking as his mullet. A 27th place finish in 2013 and a 31st place finish in 2014 will not have his confidence too high. His starting position is also a horrendous 30.5 which will not help him at the end of the day.
  • Denny Hamlin- Did you know Hamlin hasn't finished better than 23rd in 5 years at Sonoma? He actually only has two top 30's since 2010, which is terrible for a driver of his caliber and in the equipment he has.
Track Stats
  • 9 current drivers have a win at Sonoma. However, only two have multiple wins (Gordon and Stewart).
  • 18 total drivers have won a Cup race at Sonoma. Only five have multiple wins (Gordon, Stewart, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, and Ernie Ervan).
  • Of those five, only one has more than 2 wins (Jeff Gordon- 5)
  • Gordon also has the most top 5's (14) and top 10's (18) in a career
  • Gordon has the most career poles (5) and Ricky Rudd the second most (4)
  • Gordon has the best career average finish (8.0) followed by Dale Earnhardt (8.6)
  • Rusty Wallace had an average start position of 6.9 over 17 career starts
  • A Chevy has only won once (2010- Johnson) in the last 8 races. Dodge has won three times since then and has been out of the sport since after 2012.
  • Before that, Chevy had won 7 of 9 races.
  • Sonoma has been won by the Pole 5 times in 26 Cup races
  • The last Pole win was 2004- Jeff Gordon (11 races ago)
