Weekly Review and Power Rankings

The Week 23 NASCAR Power Rankings after Kyle Larson's win at MIS.

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 23 (Week 22)
  1. Martin Truex Jr (LW-1)- Great car, great run, and he added to his playoff points with a stage win. They only thing that got away was the win.
  2. Kyle Busch (LW-2)- Boy, pitting while pit lane was closed was huge, but he and the 18 team bounced back.
  3. Brad Keselowski (LW-4)- BK had a great car early, then got stuck in traffic and wasn't the same. A poor late restart cost him a quality finish.
  4. Chase Elliott (LW-8)- Another strong day by Elliott, but still no win. He really needs to be in better position late in the race.
  5. Denny Hamlin (LW-3)- A forgetful day, moving onto Bristol.
  6. Kyle Larson (LW-11)- What. A. Move.
  7. Kevin Harvick (LW-7)- 14th and now 13th at MIS this year, luckily we don't go back a third time.
  8. Matt Kenseth (LW-5)- A strong run all day long was ruined late in the race when MK had a tire go down and he limped it to the finish.
  9. Erik Jones (LW-10)- Man was Erik fast on Sunday or what? If we raced MIS one more time this year he could contend for a win here.
  10. Daniel Suarez (LW-6)- Suarez wrecked with Kahne, but not long before that was battling BK for the lead, great showing despite the wreck.
  11. Jamie McMurray (LW-NR)- The 9th place finish hopefully gets him back on track.
  12. Chris Buescher (LW-NR)- I think Chris might be getting overlooked here. He has two top tens in his last four and three finishes of 11th or better in that same time. He now has a career high three top tens in a season, and we still have races to go.
Dropped Out: Clint Bowyer (LW-9) and Jimmie Johnson (LW-12)
Just Missed: Trevor Bayne

2015 NASCAR Behind the Wall Hot Laps: Week 24

Drag, Danica, and  Fanatics

By Richard Tix

Hot Laps will be a weekly article on news in the world of NASCAR. I will write these articles any weeks where I have a thought or opinion on NASCAR news that is worth sharing. So, this could be an every week thing, or just every few weeks. Its an opinion piece, so it is open to discussion and debate and would love to here your thoughts.

High Drag

This past weekend NASCAR headed to Michigan International Speedway for the second time in 2015. Something was different this time and no I don't mean that it didn't rain. This time NASCAR was using a high drag package for the second time during the season.

The first time NASCAR tested it out was at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the results were lack luster. That might actually be giving the IMS package too much credit. Side note: I do want to mention that in the past 5-7 years the racing at Indy hasn't been very good as it is. The main point here is NASCAR is trying. NASCAR is trying and testing new packages because of its drivers, fans, and sponsors by trying to product better racing.

That is why I can't fault NASCAR, they're trying because everyone is demanding it. For the record, they also tested out a low downforce package at Kentucky and will for a second time at Darlington. It's all for us, the drivers, and any potential sponsors out there.

But, back to MIS. Because IMS is a pretty unique track NASCAR wanted to test out the package again (the MIS package was a bit different, but pretty close in concept). The best was (in my opinion) to test any package and get the best results is to test during a real race. Even in a simulated race drivers are testing things out and not fully tying to push for the front. But, in a real race drivers don't have a choice but to work with the package and push it, because they want to win.

In the end, the MIS high drag package was a disaster. I have gone to at least one MIS race a year (always AUG) since 2006 and it ranks #1 on my worst attended races list (I don't have a real list, but you get the point). Only one other time comes to mind where it was so drawn out, and that is because of a limited amount of cautions.

Even in the beginning laps where we had cautions to bunch them up, the racing quickly became single file with limited passing. The only one passing seemed to be Kyle Busch and he was passing guys from 20-42 who should be slower than a guy like Kyle, especially when JGR is on fire. So, for a package being tested to facilitate passing, it came up way short.

Where do we go from here? Well, I for one hope NASCAR completely scraps the idea. For one, it hasn't worked in two different tests (IMS and MIS), in fact it completely failed. Second, the drivers have been calling for less downforce since the 2015 areo package was first tested.

After Bristol NASCAR heads to Darlington where for the second time this season will test out a low downforce package. At Kentucky we got to watch this package turn a Kentucky track that has produced some less than stellar racing lately into one of the better 1.5 mile races of the season. So, many fans have hope that the low downforce package is the way to go, as do drivers. So far, many of the drivers idea's have been working so Darlington should be a fun one.

So, I want to credit NASCAR with trying. They're giving both a shot which is great and needed to be done. But from here on out lets scrap the high downforce and focus on better things, maybe that is the low downforce...

NASCAR Fanatics

This season it was announced that NASCAR was going with the merchandise company Fanatics for all of its track side retail. This partnership would be in the form of large tents set up on race weekend in place of the traditional team haulers.

I for one was hit hard with the news as one of my favorite traditions on race weekend is hitting up the team haulers with our race group. I was disappointing, but as I always try an do, I held off full judgement until I checked it out for myself.

So, this past weekend at MIS it was my first experience with the new Fanatic tents. We went on Friday (as we always did with the haulers) so we could beat the race day rush and frenzy. My first thought was -- huge shopping mall tents. It is much different to see large tents set up in a sport that is surrounded by big rigs and haulers, but I thought I could work with it.

After walking in I noticed that there was much more space in between the tents (one stretch on the left like a strip mall, on in the center, and one on the right like a strip mall). So, the walking area between the main areas was greater than the stretches of haulers.

However, that is where many of my pluses ended (spoiler, it also ended with a plus). I walked into the first driver stall and quickly noticed how cramped it was. The walkways inside the merchandise tents were narrow and hard to navigate. On top of that, many were set up just slightly different than the next, so finding what you wanted was a bit more difficult then the haulers that were all set up pretty much the same. Maybe I could adjust to this, but I thought it was a messy way to have it set up.

Everything is now on racks and hangers (or shelves if you're looking for die casts or other small items). This seems great for being able to test t-shirts and hats, but in reality it sets up more clutter. Many people are standing in front of the t-shirt you want to look at and because they're all sideways (most, not all) and not on display you have no idea what the shirt looks like. The haulers had all of them facing forward so you could look at a shirt at a distance. If you wanted to see how the shirt was sized you could always ask a friendly worker at the hauler for assistance. Now you have to wait for some other fans to get done hanging out in front of the shirts.

Keep in mind, this was Friday, I could not imagine how busy it was on Sunday... Moving past the part about it being hard to navigate and even looking at each shirt. I moved into the next few driver stalls and notice they started to look the same. Yes, in fact almost all of these shirts were generic from driver to driver. Same patterns, same area's the name and car went, just different colors and driver names. Nothing seemed unique. It makes sense because now one company makes them all, but gone are the days where your driver shirt was a different style than your rivals.

Still moving on we headed to my most anticipated "Legends" stall. I absolutely love throwback merchandise in any sport, but even more so in NASCAR (as do most fans). I walked in and there were two rows, one that was lined with up and coming drivers and the other classic NASCAR. What? One whole row devoted to these pioneers of the sport? The same amount as all these guys who haven't even come up yet? Don't get me wrong, I love that up and coming drivers have shirts now, but as many as some historic drivers?

Fans would eat up throwback merchandise. I saw about two Earnhardt shirts, one Bill Elliott, a few other's, and one Richard Petty item (a sweatshirt in Michigan during August). What a let down. Side note: SMI and Penske still had two trailers there. Keselowski's was loaded with MGD and High Life stuff and we ate that stuff up! Imagine what Fanatics would do with some good throwback merchandise?

Once leaving that buzz kill I had enough. I had found a Chase Elliott #25 die-cast and a pretty cool MIS Nike Dri Fit Polo. We headed to the checkout where I finally had my last plus of the Fanatics experience. At checkout Fanatics had a million registers to pay at and they also had flags for workers to wave when they were open. It looked cluttered, but this idea worked pretty well (other than confused people not getting that the flags mean people were ready to help). I think down the road when people adjust to this style of check out (you bag everything up while shopping, think Target/Walmart, and check out in one spot) it will run smooth and quick.

Prices were about the same as before, so nothing much to touch on there. Overall I was very let down with the Fanatics tents. I really do not like generic driver to driver merchandise. I'm not a fan of looking over at a guy with Matt Kenseth gear on and saying, "hey, that's my shirt but with Kenseth on it."

I was just so hopeful that the idea could work, and maybe with some adjustments it still can, but first impressions mean a lot in this sport and it turned me off from the start. The merchandise needs to be something fresh and new, not what I can pick up at Walmart for $10 less. If I am getting stuff at a track it needs to be worth it to spend $24 on a t-shirt. They also missed the mark on a huge market for throwback material (as you can see by all the Darligton paint schemes). Lastly, I can not imagine this place on a busy day the way the isles are set up and how you have to look at a shirt. You need much more space to see if you like a shirt when you take it off a rack compared to looking at it on a wall.

Fanatics, here is your warning like the high drag, get better or get out.

Danica Patrick's New Deal

Going into this season whispers started to swirl that Danica Patrick didn't have a 2016 sponsor yet. GoDaddy announced that they were splitting ways with Danica which left her in no mans land. She was not assured a deal with SHR at the time (although both sides talked about wanting to stay together).

Then after MIS news popped up that she had a press conference on Tuesday. Almost immediately the press conference had a topic, Danica's new sponsor.

Once social media caught wind, Danica herself posted a sneak peak photo of her new car with her 2016 sponsor. It was rumored to be a totally new sponsor to NASCAR and one that would enter the market for the first time. Well, on Tuesday all the talking about "who" finally ended.

In come's Nature's Bakery. Nature's, SHR, and Danica broke the news Tuesday that the three of them have reached a multi year deal starting in 2016. No news on how long the deal is, but most speculate that it will be at least three years for Danica at SHR (driver contracts are normally about three years at a time). Nature's Brand will at least be around for two of those (could be longer, but again all we know is it's multi year).

This is great news for SHR, Danica, Nature's Bakery, and NASCAR. Danica has no doubt gotten better over the years, some don't think fast enough, but she has improved none the less. She also brings in a huge crowd, one that would normally not even bat an eye at NASCAR. Plus, it is always a good thing for the sport when a new sponsor comes into town.

The hope here is that this works out for Nature's Bakery. They're a small company that has been growing quickly in the healthy food market and if this works out will gain more profits. At the same time, if it works out for them other small growing companies might find the same blueprint and join the NASCAR market.

So, good luck Nature's Bakery and welcome to NASCAR!

2015 Pit Road Week 23: Michigan

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Pure Michigan 400

By Richard Tix

Another successful trip to Michigan International Speedway is in the books for NASCAR Behind the Wall. Once again the experience was top notch. The MIS staff was friendly and helpful and Roger Curtis brought it when he packed the house (it was a nice sized crowd on Sunday).

However, that is where most of the enjoyment ended on race day. NASCAR was trying out its second High Downforce Package at MIS and it was, well, a drag. It didn't help facilitate passing and most of the day was single file racing with Matt Kenseth leading the way time after time.

Matt Kenseth was the top of the class all day, so nothing you can do to take the win from him, but it seemed to be too easy for the leader to pull away every restart. So, high downforce isn't the answer (most of us thought that, but now we know for sure).

I am glad NASCAR gave it a shot because they're doing it for the fans, drivers, and product. So, before going off on how terribe it is just understand they had to give it a shot. That being said, I hope this is the last time NASCAR tries this high downforce package. Not many people I came accross enjoyed the product it produced.

The most telling sign had to be was when drivers were asked about it post race and most either talked about something else (Harvick) or said something like it is NASCAR's decision, we just have to drive it (Keselowski). Some didn't even comment at all which say it all.

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone at MIS and track president Roger Curtis for housing such a great event. It really is more than a race when you go to Michigan and they invite you like family. If you have yet to go, get your schedule opened up for next June, August, or both!

Pit Road Power Rankings (Week 22)
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-2)- Harvick has three more top 5's and top 10's than the next closest driver (Logano). He has lead a lap in the last five races and 20 of 23 laps. That is how often he is up front. Those kinds of stats could make it a cake walk for him to get to the final four. Finish: 2nd
  2. Kyle Busch (LW-1)- He put himself in a whole after he spun in practice and had to go to the back up car. Before that, he qualified 6th and had a great car all weekend. Unfortunatly, track position was key so he never could get close enough. His run all the way up the field was impressive and about the only passing we saw all day. Finish: 11th
  3. Matt Kenseth (LW-4)- I jumped him up this list a few weeks ago and got a lot of flack for it, well how about now? He has six straight top 10's including two wins, and four top 5's. He dominated on Sunday after leading 146 of 200 laps. I have said it for a few weeks now, but JGR is on fire right now. Finish: 1st
  4. Joey Logano (LW-3)- Tough crowd, second in points and 4th in the Power Rankings. But, these are not based solely on where a driver is in points (I also want to mention many of the top 4 are interchangeable right now and you can make a case for any of them). Finish: 7th
  5. Brad Keselowski (LW-5)- Fan or not, that MGD throwback scheme was sharp and would have looked nice in VL. BK really only had a top 10 car all day and that's where he finished. Finish: 9th
  6. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-9)- Hendrick and Co didn't have the best day on Sunday, the lone bright spot was Jr. It wasn't a great day, but it was another quality day to get him onto Bristol. Finish: 10th
  7. Carl Edwards (LW-8)- If you need any evidence past Kenseth and Busch winning for a JGR resurgence, just look at Carl's fight back. He started the year off very slow and he now has five top 10's in six races (the other being a 13th place finish). Finish: 6th
  8. Jimmie Johnson (LW-6)- It was a long day for JJ at MIS this past Sunday. He overshot his pit stall once and then spun in turn four. He will bounce back, but he has looked human in 2014 and 2015. Finish: 39th
  9. Kyle Larson (LW-11)- His top 15 finish is not going to move him up these rankings fast, nor do they help him in his Chase hopes, but it also is a sign of a bit more consistency. Finish: 13th
  10. Kurt Busch (LW-7)- Kurt just hasn't seemed to be contending for wins as often as he was when he first came back and was on fire. However, he is still getting top 10 finishes. That wasn't the case on Sunday where he had a rough run. Finish: 20th
  11. Paul Menard (LW-12)- Menard is doing enough, but he also isn't doing too little. Right now he would make the Chase, but in no way will he move on if he continues to just get top 15 finishes. He needs to find a bit more to find some extra top 10's along the way. Finish: 12th
  12. Ryan Newman (LW-NR)- He is doing it again.... Only four top 5's, but if he runs this consistent he could still get to the last eight, with a shot at a final four again. His 16 top 15's and 19 top 10's are keeping him from dropping out of the Chase picture. Finish: 8th
Dropped Out: Clint Bowyer
Just Missed: Denny Hamlin
Honorable Mention: Austin Dillon (2nd)

2015 Week 23 Preview: Michigan

Pure Michigan 400

Michigan International Speedway

By Richard Tix

It is that time of year again, the time where I get to head back to Michigan International Speedway and focus on the race in person and not behind a TV and computer screen. There is nothing like going to a race in person and it never gets old even after attending year after year. Every time I go to MIS it is different as you continue to meet new fans and create new memories.

It's not just the race either, it's the whole weekend and experience. Michigan International Speedway has one of the best fan experiences around. Track president Roger Curtis (@MISroger) does a fantastic job not only promoting how awesome the MIS experience is by ways of social media, but also reaches out to fans attending the track (PS: If you follow him on Twitter he is great at interacting. Also, every 1,000 new followers he gets he gives a once in a lifetime NASCAR giveaway).

I have yet to meet him, but I have heard many good things from fans who have. I have heard he runs around the infield and the camping sites sharing his great attitude with fans who have made the trip from all over (including a lot from Canada). I have also witnessed him give away some great fan experiences over Twitter to lucky fans like the above mentioned. All because he cares about the fans experience and it gives him a way to give back.

Looking past Roger, even he will admit he isn't the reason the track is great all by himself, the whole staff, helpers, and track volunteers are top notch. They always reach out to help you get where you are going and keep you in a good mood.

After all of that you are still left with a fun track that is one of the fastest around that is housing your favorite driver for the weekend. I have always recommended the trip to MIS for anyone interested for every such reason just mention, but also you should plan a trip to any track near you within reason.

The best part about NASCAR is how great each track experience can be and how unique they are. I have yet to make another Cup track as it is not an easy feat while living in MN in my current standing, but soon I hope to start branching out and also hitting other stops during the year.

Fan's tend to focus too much on the negatives that come with going to a race like prices of tickets, hotels, and airfare. To be honest, there are always a way around many of these obstacles if you look hard enough. If you plan a head you can get great tickets for a reasonable price. Some hotels may jack up prices but if you look a bit further out (45 min-1 hr) you can still find great deals. It is not always doable, but if it is within your means and you are a NASCAR fan try and get to the track. The race day experience is what it is all about and MIS brings it! So, what are you waiting for? You still have time to go to MIS this year and pick up some great tickets!

Now, lets get back to our regularly schedule weekend preview!

The Good
  • Joey Logano- JoLo won this very race back in 2013 which really seemed to get him on the fast track to where he is now. Since then he has finishes of 9th, 3rd, and 5th (5 straight top 10's total). Since switching to Penske Joey has been a front runner race after race, in fact Penske has been the new RFR in the past few years at MIS (not to the full extent obviously).
  • Kevin Harvick- Michigan wasn't always one of Harvicks tracks, but since 2013 (5 races) he has four 2nd place finishes. Earlier this year was his lone blemish in the five race span, but I would expect him to get back on track this weekend and start a new top 10 streak.
  • Clint Bowyer- What current Cup driver has 9 straight top 10's at MIS? If you answered Bowyer you would be correct. Now, he only has 1 top 5 in that span so he might not threaten for the win. The fact remains, no other driver has more than 5 top 10's in that 9 race stretch.
  • Extra Credit- Paul Menard (4 straight top 10's, 5 in his last 6 starts)
The Middle
  • Brad Keselowski- Middle? Lately he has been more on the borderline good category but lets be honest. these categories all have there flaws based on opinion. Since BK has been in the #2 he has 5 top 10's, 8 finishes of 13th or better, in 9 total races. He has three straight top 10's so the same statement holds true for this Penske driver, they have been better than RFR here for a few years.
The Bad
  • David Gilliland- Sorry David, no pass for being on a small team. 18 races without a top 10 is rough, but considering his small team the 18 races without a top 15 is worse. Actually, he only has two top 20's and four top 25's in that time.
  • Trevor Bayne- Trevor actually did fair well in his first MIS race with RFR earlier this year, so I want to point that out first. But, before that he had only one top 15 and two top 20's in 8 races. RFR will want to see more from him like they did in June (9th place finish).
  • Kyle Busch- Let's start here, you don't ever count out a guy like Kyle. However, his last four races have been terrible here. He has four straight finishes of 30+ and a string of bad luck. Over his career he has had a few streaks like this (not to the extent) at MIS, and he always bounced back. Look for Kyle to be a candidate to be taken off this list next year.
