2016 NASCAR Driver Spotlight Review: Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson 2016 Review

Image result for kyle larson win

By Richard Tix

Season Grade: B+

Season Preview: "Last year I went with multiple wins which was bold considering how bad it crashed an burned. This year I am going with Larson once again going win-less. Many are picking him to bounce back and finally get a win in 2016. While I do think he will bounce back, I also think he has a real shot at once again coming up short in the W column. I do think he will creep back into the Chase picture with solid outings even despite a win. 7-9 top 5's and 16-18 top 10's are realistically where I see him ending back up (something close to his rookie season)."

Season Review: Well, I can't say I was right on almost anything above from my season preview article on Kyle Larson, you can't win'em all folks. In 2016 he finally notched his first NASCAR Cup Series win (which I prediced would come true each of his first two years and I was wrong so of course I would be wrong when I predicted he wouldn't win this year..). The win came at Michigan in the Pure Michigan 400, which was extra sweet for me because I was there live in person.

The win put him in the 2016 Chase where he faltered a bunch early (three of his first five races were 18th or worse). He finished the season strong with finishes of third at Phoenix and second at Homestead which is something we have seen before from Kyle before (see rookie season).

The season ended with Larson notching his best win total (one), best top 5 total (10), and second best top 10 total (15) while finishing a career best 9th in points. All those numbers are one's in which most fans expect him to surpass eventually but it was a nice stepping stone season for one of NASCAR's rising stars.

2016 NASCAR Driver Spotlight Preview: Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson 2016 Preview

By Richard Tix

2015 didn't exactly go how Kyle Larson would have planned it. It also didn't go how many of us expected it to go. After a blazing fast start to his career as a rookie in 2014 that included almost everything but a trip to Victory Lane, most thought he would end up there at least once in 2015.

I had him notching possibly multiple wins in 2015. I was wrong, but not all is lost. It was a rough 2015 season that had high expectations, but Larson still has a bunch of talent that wont just fade away.

The new low downforce package may really help him be able to wheel it around some other guys so it could be a nice step back into the spotlight.

Bold Predictions/2016 Season Expectations:

2015 Driver Spotlight Review: Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson 2015 Review

By Richard Tix

Season Grade: C-

Season Preview: "I think it is safe to assume many fans have high expectations for Larson in 2015, heck I started this article out talking about Jeff Gordon who will go down as one of the greatest drivers in the Modern Era and Chase Era. The question is can he live up to them and what should the real expectations be? I really think he will get his first win in 2015 and I think he may follow that up with one or two more. I think in 2015 his top 5 total (8) and top 10 total (17) will stay about the same, though. With the fact that I think he will win a race or two in 2015, I also think he will obviously make the Chase."

Season Review: That was one heck of a "Sophomore Slump." Larson took a step back in every single category in 2015. I for one (and a million others) had high expectations for him in 2015. Maybe that was unfair to such a young driver, but I didn't see such a rough season coming.

I will give him just a bit of a break because it seemed like Ganassi took a bit of a step back as well (I know McMurray had a nice season, but didn't front run as much compared to 2014). But still, a lot of blame falls on Larson who may have let some pressure get to him.

2015 Driver Spotlight Preview: Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson 2015 Season Preview

By Richard Tix

In 1993 a young gun came up from the lower levels of NASCAR to make his rookie season debut. In 30 races he went win-less but finished with 7 top 5's, 11 top 10's and a pole. In that rookie season he also finished 14th in points while having an average finish position of 13.1.

Meanwhile, in 2014 NASCAR had another you gun come up and take on his rookie season. That rookie was Kyle Larson. He finished the year win-less but with 8 top 5's, 17 top 10's, and 1 pole. He finished the season 17th in points and with an average finish of 15.6.

If you haven't guessed (or looked up) yet, that 1993 rookie was Jeff Gordon. The following season after his rookie year he broke out to win 2 races, 7 top 5's, and 14 top 10's, while finishing the year 8th in the standings. Year three broke the mold and he finished off his first Cup Championship, 1995 (see why I like the three year scale of new drivers?). The rest since then is history.

And history, that is what Kyle Larson is looking to make going forward. Gordon was just 21 years old his rookie year, as is Larson. In the world of NASCAR at the time there was no way a kid that young would adapt that quick. Some of the same things were said about Larson. He was too young, too raw, and hadn't spent enough time in the NASCAR ranks to do well right away at the Cup level.

Well, in 2014 Larson quieted some of those idea's but going out and putting on some impressive performances throughout the year. The most impressive part of the season to me was when he started the Chase (Chicago) with 5 straight top 10's (4 of those were top 5's).

The next part that impressed me? In the last 18 races (starting at Loudon) Larson strung together 10 top 10's, 5 of which were top 5's. Not only that, he 15 of those 18 were at least top 15's. That a streak that many top 10 drivers on the Cup level would enjoy.

Bold Predictions/2015 Season Expectation:

2014 Team Spotlight Review: Chip Ganassi Racing

Ganassi Racing 2014 Review

By Richard Tix

2014 Season Stats
Wins: 0
Top 5: 15
Top 10: 30
Pole: 3

In 2013 Ganassi parted ways with Juan Pablo Montoya and turned to rising young gun Kyle Larson. Larson didn't have much NASCAR top tier experience but was trusted to take over for the #42 team. That left Jamie McMurray as the lone veteran coming back to Ganassi in 2014. I thought going into the season Kyle would be up and down as most knew he had talent, but he was also raw. So, my thought's were about the same for the Ganassi team in 2014.

I wasn't sure what to expect as J Mac has bounced around most of his career and Kyle is a rising young gun. By the end of the season Larson was trying to lock in one of the last spots in the Chase and Jamie wasn't too far behind. However, neither one found the win they needed to assure there spot which left both drivers just short (17th and 18th in points).

All in all 2014 was a success at Chip Ganassi Racing in my opinion. Kyle Larson had an exciting season which accumulated in the Rookie of the Year Awards and Jamie McMurray was competitive week to week. It's hard to look back between this season and last because the driver stable changed so much, but for a rebuilding team (something you don't hear used much in NASCAR) they took strides in the right direction.

  • McMurray had 7 career wins in his 12 seasons as a full time Cup driver, but in 2014 when it would have locked him into the Chase he couldn't get it done. That's the bad news, the good news is he had more top 10 finishes then he has had since his 2004 (13). He finished the seaosn with 0 wins, 7 top 5's, 13 top 10's, and 2 poles while finished 18th in points.
  • Larson's rookie season ended up with him finishing one spot shy of the Chase field (17th). Not a bad rookie campaign. His 2014 season will be a big stepping stone for him going forward. The next step for him will be locking in a Chase spot in 2015 and also getting his first Cup win. In 2014 he ended the season with 0 wins, 8 top 5's, 17 top 10's, and 1 pole. All of these stats lead the Ganassi team in 2014 except for poles.

2014 Driver Spotlight Review: Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson 2014 Review

By Richard Tix

Season Grade: A-

After a season like Kyle Larson just had you would forget he was just a 22 year old rookie in 2014. The season started and he didn't even get his own spotlight, instead he was included in the underdogs preview.

Well, welcome Larson, you get your own review after that rookie season debut.

I am a fan of Larson, but even coming into his rookie year I was skeptical because of his limited amount of seat time in a NASCAR level car. He spent just 43 races between Nationwide (33 races), Truck (6 races), and Cup (4 races) before the 2014 season. That's not a whole lot of grooming before getting a ride with the "big boys."

I thought he could have an alright season, but he far exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be between him and Austin Dillon for the 2014 Rookie of the Year, but in my mind Kyle won by a land slide. I'm not talking about in the case of points (which he won pretty easily), but just on the eye test. Don't get me wrong, Austin had a pretty good rookie season himself, but some races Kyle just jumped off the track with his performance.

He took pushing the Cup guys to the edge in Nationwide races in 2013 (think Kyle Busch v Kyle Larson) and brought it on a whole new level in 2014. Still, after how well his 2014 rookie season went he has room to grow. He pushed his car into the top 5 a bunch of times in 2014 but couldn't come up with a win.

Kyle finished 2014 with 8 top 5's and 17 top 10's but in the end missed out on the Chase. The promising thing is Kyle was close to notching his first win in his first season at the Cup level. At 22 years old he almost made the Chase based on points (finished 17th). Yet, he still has much to learn, which is exciting as a fan of NASCAR. Kyle Larson proved in 2014 that he is here to stay and is ready to front line a new wave of young NASCAR talent.

Rookie Report: Week 16

2014 Season Rookie Report

Week 16

By Richard Tix

It has been awhile since NASCAR Behind the Wall has taken a look at how the 2014 rookie class has been doing. In fact, we haven't taken a look since week 5 of the NASCAR Season. As I did back in week 5, I like letting the rookies get a bunch of races in before taking a look at there season. They now have 15 races under the 2014 belt so it is safe to say they're starting to settle in. Just around the corner of the 2014 season will be NASCAR's loop back to some tracks it's already been to. We will learn a lot about what the rookies learned the first time around.

But, first up is the 2014 rookie classes first look at turning right. NASCAR heads to Sonoma Raceway which can be a lot for a driver to take in, but also a drivers opportunity to steal a win and maybe a Chase birth.

**Rookies listed by highest in Sprint Cup Standings**

  • 7th- Kyle Larson
  • 17th- Austin Dillon
  • 29th- Justin Allgaier
  • 30th- Michael Annett
  • 31st- Cole Whitt
  • 35th- Alex Bowman
  • 37th- Ryan Truex

#42 Kyle Larson

After week 5 Kyle Larson's stock was at an all time high for himself. He had just finsished 2nd at Auto Club to Kyle Busch and talk was all about him. Well since then he has bought a house, announce he is having a child, oh, and he has been racing pretty well too. Since week 5 he has 5 top 10's and 2 top 5's in 10 races. Even his poor finishes in the last 10 haven't been that bad excluding his 27th at Martinsville (11, 18, 12, and 16). I think the people who said he needs more time before being in Cup are either hiding under a rock hoping he starts to fail or all turned into believers. Oh, and he is 7th in points, highest guy in points without a win other then Matt Kenseth.

#3 Austin Dillon

Last time we took a look at Dillon he was 9th in the points standings. After 5 races he had a 9th and two 11th place finishes. Since then he has only done that once (11th at Darlington, which is a very quality finish). Also during this stretch since week 5 he only has 3 top 15's (10 races). Even though those stats look like he isn't progressing, the fact that he has had a good handful of recent races where he logged over 100 laps in the top 15 is a good sign. His best tracks have been the two Super Speedways (Daytona and Talladega) but he has been learning along the way.

#52 Justin Allgaier

After Dillon and Larson we start getting into rookies with lesser equipment so it is a bit harder to judge. I will start with this about Justin, he has had some pretty impressive runs unfortunately most have not resulted in great finishes. After week 5 he was 29th in the standings and after the last 10 races he has stayed still at 29th. He has has 5 top 25 finishes since week 5 (10 races) and just finished a career best 16th at Michigan. In fact Michigan was the first time this season his driver rating was above 70 after running 71% of the race in the top 15.

#7 Michael Annett

Allgaier stayed still at 29th in points in the last 10 races but Annett came a bit closer. After week 5 he was 31st in the Cup standings and in the last stretch he moved up to 30th. In the last 10 he has four total top 25's with two of those being top 20's. Annett had a career best finish of 16th at Talladega but I would argue his 20th place finish at Pocono was one of his better races. At Pocono he ran a season high 24 laps in the top 15 and a season high average running position of 23rd.

#26 Cole Whitt

A lot has happened since week 5 of the NASCAR season for Cole Whitt. After week 8 Swan Racing folded under financial pressure. But BK racing was quick to pick up Cole and add a third rookie to there team (Bowman and Truex). Cole has only has one top 25 since his career high finish 18th in week 5 (Fontana). However, 7 times in his last 10 races he has finished in the top 30. In my mind BK racing is not ready for three cars, let alone 3 rookies. But, they were good enough to give Cole a shot (I would also argue that Cole Whitt is the best rookie on the BK Team). So, times are rough for Whitt but he should stick around if he keeps showing he can compete in lower equipment. He is currently 31st in points.

#23 Alex Bowman

When I see a car in the wall my first thought is Alex Bowman.... Alright, he has had some rough outings lately, but I don't actually immediately think its Alex (though I'm not surprised when it is).  Unlike my thoughts on Larson, I did believe Bowman needed more grooming in lower levels (I really liked Larson, so I had no problem giving him a shot). He only had 6 career top 10's in 36 career starts in Nationwide and most of Bowman's work has been done in the ARCA series to this point. But, I don't blame Alex, because NASCAR does not have a lot of opportunities when you look it as a whole, so he had to jump on it. I only hope he can stick around long enough to actually get some time behind the wheel and a decent ride. Currently he is 35th in points, having started all 15 races with no top 10's.

#83 Ryan Truex

Not a lot to see here. I like Ryan Truex, but he really should be getting more experience in lower levels. He has only run 40 total laps all season in the top 15 (28 of those coming at Talladega). BK Racing really shouldn't be running 3 cars, let alone 3 rookies right now. If they are going to run 3 car's they really should fill the third car with a veteran to help out the young guys. You have to wonder how long BK Racing will be able to keep this up. Right now he is 37th in points, running 12 of the 15 races and a high finish of 30th.
