2015 Review

Dale Earnhardt Jr Career Paint Schemes

The Junior revival is in full force. Since 2012 he has turned a page in his career and become a much more balanced and consistent Cup driver. He has wins in three of four of those seasons, at least double digit top 5's in all four, and 20+ top 10's in all four.

In the last two he has put up 4 and 3 wins which has given him his best back to back season's since 2003 and 2004 when he put up 2 wins and 6 wins. 

I think we have now seen the Junior that we will come to expect yearly and continue to see in 2016. 

Bold Predictions/2016 Season Expectations:

• I think Jr moves past the first two rounds again in 2016 (missed it in 2015 and finished 12th), which is the round with 8 drivers left. Once there, I think he will make a push for the finale at Miami, but I do think he will come up short. However, it wont surprise me if he finally makes the final four. I think 2-3 wins, 12-14 top 5's, and 19-21 top 10's are in the cards for Earnhardt, which are all just a bit down from 2015.

Season Grade: B+

Season Preview: "After last season Jr Nation is going to be expecting a run at the title again. They got new hope in his chance to finally win a Cup Championship and they wont let the loss of Letarte be an excuse. The best news for this team would be an early season win at Daytona again, but if they don't get that I can see the #88 winning less races than 2014. When they won early it gave them a lot of freedom that other teams didn't have. I still see 1-2 wins, 8-10 top 5's, and 18-20 top 10's. All those stats are down from 2014, yet he could finish higher than 8th in 2015 because of a better Chase performance."

Season Review: Dale Earnhardt Jr and the #88 team took the CC switch in stride and didn't miss a beat in 2015. Actually, they did opposite of what I thought and topped my wins, top 10's, and top 10's, but finished lower in the Chase. But, that is how the Chase works now. Sometimes you have a more consistent season and you finish lower. 

What ifs come into play here because "if" Junior would have just advanced from a win at Talladega he would have done well enough to get to Miami as a final four contender. No, he wouldn't have won but it would have been an exciting moment for Jr Nation.

2015's successful season gives him back to back top performances after 2 wins, 16 top 5's (tied a career best), and 22 top 10's (tied a career best). 2014/2015 was his best back to back season's since an almost identical 2003/2004 (except he won one more race). All of that said, it was obviously a great year overall for the 88.

Rain, rain, and more rain. That pretty much sums up the day/night at Phoenix. It started with rain (rain delay for way too much of the day) and it ended with rain (NASCAR called the race due to rain). It was a huge disappointment in a race that was a make or break for so many drivers and there Championship hopes.

Not many people wanted to see the race end in a rain delay. The 18, 78, and there camps were ones who were happy to see it end (because they got to advance. Also, many Junior fans were happy with the win, but even some wanted the race to go on. 

The biggest disappointment was how long it took NASCAR to clean up the 17 and 32 incident on the track which lead to a long wait and no restart. Either way, that same rain would have come down and ended the race short most likely.

It isn't the ending we wanted, but the ending we got so I guess we have to live with it. Sometimes nature gets in the way and with safety and logistics of the schedule and teams, a decision has to be made. 

The more important this to note is we are down to four drivers left and one race. It is a bit depressing to think the 2015 season is almost over. But, one last race in Miami with four guys competing for a title is one not to miss. Gordon, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Martin Truex Jr fight for the right to be the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion.

Full Race Results: Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500

1. Kevin Harvick (LW-2)- Only rain can stop Harvick at Phoenix as he was again having a dominate day leading the field. He has been here, done that, and will be the favorite going into Sunday.
2. Kyle Busch (LW-3)- Kyle got here on consistency, which is what lacked for him in past Chases. He might be able to put it together for a Championship finally.
3. Jeff Gordon (LW-1)- All he needs is one race to put number 5 in the books. What a way to go out. I for one will be pulling for him or the underdog (Truex), because that is the way I roll unless I have a favorite driver in it.
4. Martin Truex Jr (LW-4)- Compared to last years Newman and Hamlin, this field deserves a shot at the title (you could make a case for Gordon not, but the story line alone makes me look past that). Truex has had a great season all year and has one race to put it all on the line.
5. Brad Keselowski (LW-5)- Hard to believe neither Penske car will be in the final. Penske and JGR have had the best cars for the past couple months, while Penske has also been on a tear since last year. 
6. Joey Logano (LW-7)- Speaking of Penske, JoLo had a legit 2nd place car, but it still might not have been enough if they went green to beat Harvick. Kenseth fans may rejoice, but JoLo was better than the 20 all season long so as a racing fan it is a bummer in the system that leaves him out of the finale.
7. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-9)- Maybe its not the way a driver likes to win, but a win is a win and Junior deserved the good luck after everything that happened in Dega.
8. Carl Edwards (LW-6)- He still needed more spots on Sunday and I just didn't see it happening. They just weren't getting enough in this last round. 
9. Jimmie Johnson (LW-10)- A win and a top 5, JJ should be higher, but the top 4 spots go to Chase drivers, and Penske has been too good so I apologize JJ fans.
10. Kurt Busch (LW-8)- Kurt really needed the rain to stop. He had a good car (but note so did many others like the 4 and 22) and could have gambled to try and win. It was a strong bounce back season and one he can grow on with SHR.
11. Denny Hamlin (LW-NR)- Hamlins bad luck at Dega and Texas (if he would have advanced) really cost him. Last year he made the Chase with a worse season, this year he was better year round and missed. Just the nature of the beast.
12. Paul Menard (LW-12)- His top 5's and top 10's were both way down compared to last year (really last year was just a career year), but his average finish was still better. That is because he was racking up top 15's and top 20's while not having bad finishes. Same is true for his Chase.

Week 10: Geico 500

This past weekend NASCAR headed away from the short track and instead hit it's second superspeedway of 2015, Talladega. For many fans Talladega is a race circled on the calendar. For hardcore fan's they like that the race can bring unexpected winners, like underdogs and rookies. For novice fan's who catch a handful of races each year they come for the tracks atmosphere and the fact that they might see the "big one."

No matter what, Talladega has something for some fan out there which makes it an attraction each time NASCAR stops here.

This past weekend again brought the excitement of what might happen because of last years new Chase rules. Would an underdog driver come in, steal a win, and possibly even a Chase spot? The weekend kicked off with a fan favorite winning the Pole, Jeff Gordon. Then we watch guys like Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt Jr lead a bunch of laps.

In the end a few guys up front also gave us the story line of the underdog. Ryan Blaney (part time driver in the Wood Brothers #21) was in the top 3. Also, Sam Hornish Jr and Paul Menard were lurking in the top 10. All this time it was two of the top dogs in Cup up front, JJ and Jr. 

Dale Jr lead the pack around as the laps wound down and every fan (hardcore or novice) was waiting for the drivers to make there move. 15 laps left....Nothing. 10 laps left....Nothing. 5 laps left.....Nothing. 3 laps left.....Still nothing.

With about a lap and a half left Denny Hamlin dropped out of line....Nothing. Barely anyone went with him and it was too late. In the end one of the best cars on the day won, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 

It was a big moment for Jr Nation, but left many fans (even some from Jr Nation) wondering why no one went? The worst part about it was the fans attacking NASCAR and also NASCAR's rule package. Some not realizing it was the same package that they were happy with last year at Talladega (fans, NASCAR hasn't changed the superspeedway package from 2014 to 2015).

But, fans again are placing blame in the wrong place. It wasn't NASCAR who didn't get the drivers to go and form another line, it was the drivers. No driver was willing to go because they thought they would be left out to dry. That might have been the case, but then why weren't teams and spotters trying to work out deals with others? Why were no alliances made? 

Instead they road around in single file and didn't challenge Jr much. But, sometimes that is racing. We don't always get the exciting finish and there is nothing you can do about it. But, to blame NASCAR is a bit crazy.

If NASCAR threw a fantum yellow for debris to pack them up again, the same fans would be upset and claiming "WWE, thats all NASCAR is today." Its what NASCAR has to deal with day to day, a no win situation. Sometimes there is nothing NASCAR can do to a car package or the points to get them to choose to push for a win when they're sitting in 5th and don't think anyone would go with them. Folks, its racing....

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 10 (Week 9)

1. Kevin Harvick (LW-1)- For the first time in a few weeks it was a tough decision at #1, yet in the end it was still clear Harvick was #1. Even after a day he was involved in a wreck early his pit crew fought back and he hung around. Finish: 8th
2. Jimmie Johnson (LW-2)- JJ is on a pretty good run since his win at Texas (hasn't finished worse than 3rd). It's a weird strong run for JJ as much of the focus is on Harvick and he is being overlooked. Finish: 2nd
3. Martin Truex Jr (LW-8)- Speaking of overlooked, Truex may have broke his top ten streak at Bristol but has got right back on it. He now has top tens in 9 of 10 races and looks to be in a good spot to make the Chase with or without a win. Finish: 5th
4. Kurt Busch (LW-4)- Kurt missed three races and is above guys like Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, and Greg Biffle in points. Sunday he once again was a good pusher at a superspeedway but faded to an alright finish. Finish: 12th
5. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-9)- The short track swing wasn't what Jr wanted (finishes of 36th, 16th, and 14th) but he found what was missing at Dega. When he got out front he didn't look back much. Finish: 1st
6. Jeff Gordon (LW-5)- Gordon has run very well this year, but unlike in 2015 the standings and results don't show it. He is actually behind Aric Almirola by one point in the standings and Aric has zero top 10's (Gordon has 6). Finish: 31st
7. Joey Logano (LW-3)- JoLo is still one of the top 4 or 5 contenders so far this year, but what has happened to his luck recently? Sunday it happened again (though it happens to many at tracks like Dega). He was close to getting back on the lead lap, but didn't have enough time. Finish: 33rd
8. Jamie McMurray (LW-7)- JMac is hanging tough in 2015 after a quality 2014 season. Will Ganassi bring him back in 2016? But, enough of that...At Dega he once again looked strong but just didn't have the car or help to win. Finish: 11th
9. Ryan Newman (LW-12)- Take out his point deduction and Newman has finishes of 10, 3, 3, 5, 12, 5, 11, and 7. His only two bad finishes were 38th at Daytona and 27th at Martinsville. He is doing just what he did in 2014 and is back to 14th in the standings. Finish: 7th
10. Matt Kenseth (LW-6)- After a hot streak on the short tracks Kenseth came back down to earth where he couldn't get in a good spot to finish the race which resulted in a poor finish. Finish: 25th
11. Brad Keselowski (LW-11)- BK had a strong car again on Sunday and stayed up in the top 5 most of the day. With under 50 left he got shuffled to the back and couldn't find another line to make up ground. That's three tough finishes in a row where he had a fast car. Finish: 22nd
12. Paul Menard (LW-NR)- Menard only has two top 10's (both top 5's) this season, but this Sunday was one of them. Even with lacking top 10's, Paul is still 11th in points. Finish: 3rd

Dropped Out: Kasey Kahne (LW-10)

Just Missed: No one really

Honorable Mention: Ryan Blaney (4th), Josh Wise (10th), Cole Whitt (13th), JJ Yelly (14th), and Alex Bowman (16th)

2014 Season Review

For the most part, 2014 was a dream season for Jr. For starters, Jr kicked the season off in style by winning his second Daytona 500 and pretty much locking him into the new Chase because of the new points system.

Dale followed that up by finishing second the next two races at Phoenix and Vegas. After 14 races he had more wins (2) then he had combined from 2009-2013. He had the same amount of wins (2) that he had from  2007-2013. By notching his second win at Pocono it was the first time he had a multiple win season since 2004.

Jr didn't stop at two either, he won four races in total in 2014 on his way to the Chase. The second round of the Chase wasn't kind to Jr and he was left out of the running, but past that he has a great season. He ended with 4 wins, 12 top 5's, and 20 top 10's. All of this was done during Steve Letarte final season as Crew Chief.

Now that the 2015 season is coming up fast the uncertainty still looms as Jr gets ready to take on the season with a new CC for the first time since 2010 (Steve took over in 2011). Maybe the loss of Letarte wont matter much, but most fans just witnessed a pretty great 2014 performance so the thought may linger if they struggle early.

Top 10: 74

Poles: 4

HMS had another kind of season you would expect out of the top Cup team. 13 total wins and 40 top 5's is nothing to look down on. Actually HMS ended up getting great bounce back season's from Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr and it all started off with a Daytona 500 win to start the season.

However, at the end of the season HMS came up short of winning another Sprint Cup title. In fact, not a single driver from HMS made the Finale at Homestead even though they went in as favorites besides Team Penske (and Harvick). 

All in all the team has a lot of good things to look back at in 2014 but will be looking for its first Championship in the New Chase Era.

Jeff Gordon

• Its been said by many (and heck, on this blog a ton) that Jeff Gordon entered 2014 with a ton of rumors, some about retirement. Yet, he came back as strong as ever this past season and put all of that to rest. He was a title favorite that came up short in 2014. He ended the year with 4 wins, 14 top 10's, 23 top 10's, 3 poles, and finishing 6th in points

• Starting off 2014 by winning his second career Daytona 500 was a dream start to 2014. After the announcement of Steve Letarte leaving at the end of the season the momentum started to roll that maybe this could be a special season for the pair. In the end they came up short on the storybook ending to Steve's CC career with Jr. Jr still ended with 4 wins, 12 top 5's, 20 top 10's, and finishing 8th in points.

Jimmie Johnson

• 2014 was a down year for JJ in JJ terms, for most drivers it was still a quality year. The most surprising fact was that he finished 11th in the standings and wasn't really a huge threat during the Chase which is what we as fans have come to expect. He still finished the year with a more than respectable 4 wins, 11 top 5's, 20 top 10's, and 1 pole. 

Kasey Kahne

• 2014 wasn't Kahnes year, that is for sure when it comes to racing. All in all he just wasn't consistent, yet in the end he made the Chase which is the big picture. The bigger picture going forward will be making the final in Homestead and Kasey will get every chance to do that with his new extension with HMS. He finished 2014 with 1 win, 3 top 5's, and 11 top 10's while finishing 15th in points.

Season Grade: A-

"After the review of 2013, it is hard not to think that Jr has a shot to contend in 2014. In fact, these numbers probably make Jr Nation drool with the thought of him holding that Championship Trophy. It all starts at Daytona where Jr use to be dominate. In his last 5 starts at the Daytona 500 he has finished runner up 3 times, the other to he finished 24 (but won the Pole), and 27th"

That is how my preview of Jr ended before the season started. I had a feeling that Dale Jr would take his good run in the 2013 Chase and roll it over into a good run in 2014. On top of that we found out the news that his CC Steve Letarte would be leaving him for the booth in 2015. So this past season was going to be a fun ride for the #88 team.

Dale Jr's season started off with a bang winning the 2014 Daytona 500. He ran with that into the next two races and finished runner up in both. In the first 21 races Jr had 15 top 10's and 3 of his 4 wins. So the beginning of his 2014 season was everything Jr Nation could want and more. 

However, the last 15 races were not as smooth. In no way did he finish out 2014 poorly, but after such a hot start most fans expected more. He has just 5 top 10's in the last 15. He did notch his last win of 2014 at Martinsville. That win would have been even bigger if the beginning of his Chase hadn't had so many poor finishes, as it would have locked him into the final race at Miami.

So we leave 2014 behind as the Dale Earnhardt Jr and Steve Letarte era ends. How will Jr's future go without Steve at the helm? That will be a major story line heading into 2015 and might also show up on Jr's season preview.

Well, its been a few weeks since we have done Dale Earnhardt Jr Adrenaline Tweets. After races he has been pretty quiet (not enough to justify a whole article on) and I haven't caught any recent Q&A's so I have skipped it. Well this week he won at Pocono and finished up the 2014 Tricky Triangle Sweep so he had a few good ones I thought should be shared.

I would not call myself a Dale Earnhardt Jr fan, but he is definitely one of the best on Twitter. He always has some great humor and he interacts with the fans in a great way. Some drivers have really taken a hold of there Social Media platform to help the sport grow and as of Daytona Jr is one of those towards the front.

Another race down in the 2014 NASCAR regular season and another race that goes by where we get a repeat winner. I did say before the season we wont be getting more then 16 winner (it could happen someday, but chances are we normally wont); meaning points will still be important in the race to the Chase.

Just check out the race right now around the final Chase spot (16th). Greg Biffle's gamble at the end of the race didn't pay off in a win (5th place finish), but it did work out in the form of jumping up to 16th in points (or the last spot in on points). He gained the lead over Kasey Kahne who finished 10th by 1 point (Biffle- 590 and Kahne- 589). Biffle also made the jump on Austin Dillon at Pocono. Biffle if leading Dillon by two points after Dillon finished 15th. At the same time, Paul Menard was caught up in a wreck after having a pretty good day and lost a lot of ground on the 16th spot (now 28 points out from 16th).

The 16th spot will be the weekly story line on the home stretch to the Chase, but the big story on Sunday was Dale Earnhardt Jr and Steve Latarte playing the perfect strategy towards the end of the race that resulted in Jr's third win of the 2014 season. As Jr put it, "any driver could be put with this team and win the race." Jr needs to give himself a little more credit, as he was the one holding off a hard charging Harvick, and if it wasn't Harvick it would have been Logano. But, Jr is humble and know's how important a good team is towards a Championship (even without winning one yet). 

The win moves Dale Jr into the first spot in the Chase standings and ties him with Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski for most wins in 2014 (3). The thing I like seeing the most this season out of Dale Jr is he truly soaks in every moment. You can tell every win he takes it all in and totally enjoys every second. If he makes a run at a title it will be a special time to be a NASCAR fan, not because he is the son of Dale Earnhardt but because of how much it means to him. You can tell now, racing truly makes Jr happy.

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 21 (Week 20)

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-4)- He is your new Chase standings leader after notching his third win and having more points then BK and JJ. Last time Jr was in the right place at the right time when BK fell off due to debris on his grill. This time around at Pocono Steve Letarte put him in the right place at the right time by a great pit strategy down the stretch.
2. Jeff Gordon (LW-2)- A week after winning his 5th career race at IMS Gordon follows up with another quality finish we have been re-accustomed to seeing (6th). Gordon had the car to beat Sunday but lost the track position towards the end of the race and didn't have enough to get it back. 
3. Denny Hamlin (LW-6)- Hamlin had a great save at the end of the race but it started a chain reaction that took out a bunch of drivers who were still contending. It wasn't DH's fault, but was unfortunate for a lot of other guys. Not many people are noticing, but Denny has four straight top 10's. 
4. Kevin Harvick (LW-NR)- Yes, he was off my rankings (See Jimmie Johnson, these are Power Rankings not rankings based on standings), but he proved with his pole and 8th place finish at Indy and now his runner up finish at Pocono with a beat up car that he deserves a spot. The problem with the #4 is when they're on they're a top 3 team, but they are not always on.
5. Brad Keselowski (LW-3)- Taking about saves, BK's lap one save was one heck of a save. DH saved one towards the late stages of the race that set off a chain reaction that got BK involved and slowed down his day of trying to come back. BK salvaged a 23rd place finish, but has to be disappointing after he almost won the first stop at Pocono. 
6. Ryan Newman (LW-7)- If these rankings were purely based off consistency Newman would be top 5 every week. I do take some consideration into consistency because it truly shows who is "hot" at the time, he just hasn't had those runs that make you think he can contend. Newman is all the way up to 5th in the points and is now within 26 points of Kenseth.
7. Kasey Kahne (LW-8)- A good run by Kahne on Sunday but not great. He salvaged a 10th place finish after running most of the day in about 11th position. That makes 5 top 10's in his last 7 races (and an 11th place finish) which is dramatically helping his case at a points spot in the Chase.
8. Clint Bowyer (LW-10)- Ironically Bowyer hasn't had a really bad finish since Richmond (two 23rds are his worst finishes since then). He also has 7 top 10's since leaving Richmond and has made his way up to 9th in the points (14th in the Chase standings).
9. Matt Kenseth (LW-5)- I don't think Kenseth had a car to win Sunday, but a top 10 looked like it was in the books. That is, until he was caught up in the DH save/wreck with Vickers. It looked like Kenseth would clear high until Vickers lost it trying to avoid Hamlin. Tough week for the #20 and you can tell some frustration is growing by not finding a win yet (he is still safe to get in with points).
10. Kyle Busch (LW-1)- Yes, it is a long fall, but I also gave him the benefit of the doubt last week after three 2nd place finishes in four races. Guys like Gordon could have been considered for the top spot instead. Well, this week it isn't his fault (blown engine) but I really thought he would get in a roll this year and notch a bunch of wins.
11. Kyle Larson (LW-12)- Larson starts making a case to be farther up the rankings and then he hits a rough spell. Right now he is on the up tick and another quality finish will not only move him up these rankings but help out his Chase hopes.
12. Jimmie Johnson (LW-9)- Last week I saw a whole bunch of Power Rankings around with JJ in the top 5, yet he hadn't done anything in three races. Now, its four races. In my opinion (and because of what they're named) they are POWER RANKINGS. Unfortunately that means spots go to who is hot now and not just by the points standings. Sorry JJ fans, he has had some bad luck lately and it will not keep him high in these rankings.

Dropped Out: Austin Dillon

Just Missed: Joey Logano and Greg Biffle

Honorable Mention: Jamie McMurray (7th), Casey Mears (12th), Macus Ambrose (14th), Justin Allgaier (16th), and David Gilliland (17th).

This week a lot of underdog drivers finished in the top 25 after the whole mess late in the race left 17 drivers on the lead lap. I got a decent response from NASCAR fans on Twitter when I asked who would win this week, but no one picked Dale Earnhardt Jr. Its odd because Jr Nation is so big that I figure every week I actually ask (A few weeks lately I have been bad at remembering since it has been a busy Summer) I will get at least one Jr response. I did get a lot of Gordon and BK, plus my loyal Kahne vote and Kyle Busch vote each week.
