2018 NASCAR Pit Road Week 10: Talladega

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

By Richard Tix

Nothing to see here. No, seriously, I missed most of the race live and had to catch up via some DVR/twitter updates. I was on a mini vacation in northern Minnesota and for the most part disconnected (except for a few beer posts since I hit up a few local breweries). So, I was either out enjoying the nice weather, driving home, or getting some yard work done since Spring finally has arrived in MN (after an extended, miserable, Winter). So, lets get straight into the rankings.

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 10 (Week 9)
  1. Kyle Busch (LW-1)- He didn't win, he didn't lead. and overall it was just a blah day for the 18 team, but they didn't need a grand showing at Dega. They will look to jump back on track at Dover where Kyle has three wins including the last trip there in the Fall.
  2. Joey Logano (LW-1)- Big win for JoLo and Team Penske, however one win is not enough to take the top spot from Rowdy just yet.
  3. Kevin Harvick (LW-3)- Another race another top five (seven total in 2018).
  4. Denny Hamlin (LW-7)- Peanut butter and jelly. Macaroni and cheese. Denny Hamlin and pitting penalties. These are the great combo's in life. Seriously Denny, figure it out.
  5. Clint Bowyer (LW-3)- A late wreck hurt Clint's day, but he wasn't running inside the top 10 that often on the day anyways.
  6. Kurt Busch (LW-11)- Kurt somehow is fifth in points despite one top five and only four top tens. He does have seven top 15's in 10 races, though.
  7. Jimmie Johnson (LW-9)- JJ is slowly climbing back from his slow start. After a 13th place this weekend he moved up one spot in the standings to 14th overall.
  8. Chase Elliott (LW-NR)- Elliott now has back to back top fives for the first time in 2018. At Richmond he turned an average car into a top five late and at Dega he brought it home clean.
  9. Kyle Larson (LW-6)- Just when Larson was heating up he gets caught up in a wreck at Talladega. Next week could be the time he shoots up these rankings.
  10. Martin Truex Jr (LW-5)- Truex was part of an early wreck which I normally try not fading guys too much on at tracks like Dega and Daytona. However, his last four races have all gone poorly in one way or another, so time to fade the No. 78 a bit.
  11. Brad Keselowski (LW-8)- BK led some laps and got a stage point before eventually succumbing to Dega (wrecking). He is still 6th in points, but they feel much further away from a win.
  12. Daniel Suarez (LW-12)- Back to back top tens and no movement? I know, it's tough but so much was moving a head of him at a hit or miss track like Dega that I wasn't sure he should be moving up in front of guys like BK, Larson, or JJ yet. Don't let that take anything away from how consistent he has been running.
Dropped Out: Ryan Blaney (LW-10)
Just Missed: Aric Almirola, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Alex Bowman, and Ryan Newman

2017 NASCAR Week 31 Power Rankings after Talladega

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 31 (Week 30)
  1. Martin Truex Jr (LW-1)- Everyone gets a pass at Talladega, including the best team in 2017. Truex might just go into Kansas and grab another win on the year.
  2. Kyle Larson (LW-2)- After such a cluster, Larson can take a safe 13th place finish onto Kansas and the next round.
  3. Chase Elliott (LW-3)- Chase made his move late and Suarez was late to fill the hole. I get it, it was aggressive, but who wouldn't be? Suarez shouldn't have been clear to come down so I don't blame it on the No. 24.
  4. Brad Keselowski (LW-9)- How BK made it through a few of those wreck and to the end unscathed is beyond me. He now has five career wins at Talladega and is locked into the round of eight.
  5. Denny Hamlin (LW-5)- Hamlin was one of about three cars to not be involved in an incident heading into the last restart, amazing. This round he has finishes of 6th and 4th and should move on.
  6. Matt Kenseth (LW-6)- 9th, 3rd, 11th, 11th, and 14th are Kenseth's playoff finishes. Yet, he finds himself at the moment on the outside looking in because of his regular season and lack of playoff points (3 playoff points. 10th in points).
  7. Kevin Harvick (LW-10)- It's weird, Harvick is fourth in points but doesn't feel safe for the next round yet. He actually has a 22 point lead on 9th so he should be ok, but anything can happen.
  8. Kyle Busch (LW-4)- What a round difference makes. Kyle can't catch a break right now, but luckily we're heading to Kansas and he has been very good here lately (five straight top 5's including a win).
  9. Jimmie Johnson (LW-8)- JJ is currently sitting 8th, and would be moving onto the next round, however he will need a strong run at Kansas to make sure he advances.
  10. Ryan Blaney (LW-11)- Blaney is actually in a transfer spot by 9 points over Kyle Busch and two points over Jimmie. Luckily the No. 21 has shown speed at 1.5's, unlucky he is up against Kyle Busch and JJ and only two of them get a spot in the next round.
  11. Jamie McMurray (LW-7)- Did I jinx JMac? He was out before most of the craziness started after wrecking. This comes just a week after having back to back nice finishes.
  12. Ricky Stenhouse Jr (LW-12)- I'm not sure Ricky will be able to get it done at Kansas to move on, but it was a nice run to get here.

What to Watch For?

The Big One
  • I won't be watching this because I want to see the big one, because honestly I don't watch the race for wreck. However, at Talladega it is almost a given a wreck of at least a decent size will happen. What that means at this time of the year is playoff hopes can be lost and won during this race. From start to finish it will be interesting who can get out front and stay there (the safest spot) or who falls back and rides around for 80% of the race, which doesn't always work out.
Jamie McMurray's Run at the Next Round
  • Yeah, I will be watching Jamie McMurray all day. Do I think he will win? Probably not. But he has (2009 and 2013) and can run up front on a good day. Jamie has back to back top tens and three top tens in the four playoff races so far, so basically I'm watching him to see if he can keep it going and make the last eight drivers in the playoffs. If he makes the final eight I would be surprised if he isn't the shocker of the playoffs this year (doubt Stenhouse makes it to next round). So, keep and eye on the No. 1 and what his strategy is all day long.
The Toyota's and if Someone Will "Steal" a Win
  • 78, 18, 18, and 78. Obviously I don't have to tell you that's how the playoffs have started. Those two Toyota's have dominated the playoffs and much of the 2017 season. Talladega gives other drivers a new life which means some aggressive moves will be made throughout the race, including the final stage. Their is a catch, some Toyota drivers are also good at Talladega. However, everyone elses odds go up of beating the No. 78 before we head to Kansas where he will probably dominate again (led 104 laps on his way to a win at Kansas earlier this year).

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr- We know this story. Stenhouse won here earlier this year after taking the pole. He also has back to back top fives and an average finish of 10.4 in eight career races.
  • Brad Keselowski- This is one of BK's better tracks considering how inconsistent the nature of Dega is. He has four career wins here in 17 starts (including his first ever) and normally rides out up front.
  • Joey Logano- Up and down, up and down. JoLo has won two of the last four, but also finished 25th or worse in tow of the last four...
The Middle
  • Kurt Busch- Four straight top tens, five top tens in his last six, and all six were 12th or better. He has been running well at Taladega as of late, can it continue?
The Bad
  • Matt Kenseth- I typically think of Kenseth as a good plate driver, but lately his luck hasn't been very good at Dega. In his last five he has zero top twenties, and in his last eight he only has one finish better then 20th (second in 2014).
  • Kasey Kahne- 22.1: Kasey Kahnes average finish at Dega. It just has been a mixed bag of bad finishes for Kasey lately.
  • Ryan Newman- When you think of waiting in back at Daytona and Dega you think of Newman. Ok, maybe you don't, but I do. Lately, it hasn't paid off in many top tens. He has four straight races outside the top ten at Dega.

Guess who's back, back again? NBTW's back, tell a friend. Guess who's back, guess who's back.... Ok, it didn't really ring but I bet you had the song going in your head for a second....

A week long Saturday to Saturday vacation is a blessing, but man it really puts a lag on your duties to keep up with a simple fan run blog. It's crazy how easy it is to get behind with a simple relaxing vacation stuck in the beginning of the NASCAR season.

The vaca was great. Sitting beach and pool side all day with a drink in my hand was perfect, but it's time to leave the fresh salt water behind and mix in the smell of some rubber laying down laps.

After missing the Week 9 Power Rankings lets get back on track in week 10.

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 10 (Week 8)
  1. Brad Keselowski (LW-6)- After missing a power rankings and coming back after Talladega the rankings really are a mash up of crap. However, BK ran strong at RIR leading 110 laps and bounced back late and scrapped to a top ten at Talladega.
  2. Jimmie Johnson (LW-2)- Back to back wins and then I missed two races.... I CURSED JJ! Just kidding, since then he has a quality 11th and 8th place finish.
  3. Joey Logano (LW-4)- A win that's a win, but doesn't count for a win, except it does... Confusing? Bad luck at Dega ruined his streak of five straight top fives.
  4. Ricky Stenhouse Jr (LW-10)- Four top fives in the last five races including a huge win at Talladega may just lock him into the Playoffs. One more top five an he matches his career mark set last year in top fives and top tens.
  5. Kyle Larson (LW-1)- Larson's last top ten was the last race I got to watch from start to finish (Bristol). I caught about 20 laps of stage two on Sunday, but then was busy from post vacation breakdown. A coincidence he struggled while I was out of the country? I think not.. Still a 14th and 12th weren't that bad.
  6. Kevin Harvick (LW-8)- Harvick still doesn't have a win in 2017 yet. I feel one coming.
  7. Chase Elliott (LW-3)- Just like Larson, Chase struggled a bit the two races I missed while in Mexico. The 24 will bounce back eventually.
  8. Martin Truex Jr (LW-5)- Truex really shouldn't be this low, but here we are... 8th, 8th, 10th, and 35th make up his last four and Dega is a wild card, so I'm sorry Martin fans.
  9. Jamie McMurray (LW-9)- Three top 10's in his last four and four in his last six, JMac is continuing a nice season thus far. Take out the bad call at Martinsville and his only finish outside the top 15 was a crash at the Daytona 500.
  10. Denny Hamlin (LW-NR)- He's not running bad, but he really isn't running very well either. That is all.
  11. Kurt Busch (LW-NR)- I leave for Mexico and Kurt finally shows some life. Good to see it out of a team that has fallen down since the 500 win.
  12. Clint Bowyer (LW-7)- Two top 15's in the last two races isn't bad, but after pushing for a win at Bristol it's also a step backwards.
Dropped Out: Trevor Bayne (LW-11) and Matt Kenseth (LW-12)
Just Missed: Kyle Busch and Aric Almirola

2016 Pit Road Week 32: Talladega

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Hellman's 500

By Richard Tix

I'm going to leave most of the ranting out of this week's preview (though this is normally where I get my full opinion out in one piece and not 140 characters at a time). I think I covered enough on twitter and if you're really curious as to my opinion of Talladega or Joe Gibbs Racing at Dega, just ask me and I will enlighten you.

So, Ill leave it at this: They still have a chance to win the war without winning the battle. Even while losing the battle they didn't take many casualties because they were smart with strategy, but rather set themselves up for a better shot at winning the war.

When you're in a spot to win a war, you can take any strategy it takes as long as you do not take on added casualties to get there. I'd say no wrecked cars or injured drivers will suffice for nor casualties.

Oh, and if JGR wins a Championship they will gain more fans then they lost during the "layup" at Dega.

Now, onto the Power Rankings that finally gives hope to non Chase drivers again! That's because we still have twelve spots but only the top eight have to be the current Chase drivers, the last four spots are fair game!

A review of the Chase Power Ranking Rules:

For the first three races we will have 16 drivers ranked and they will all come from the Chase field. Once NASCAR cuts the field to 12 so will Behind the Wall (again, all Chase drivers). Once we cut to 8 drivers I will still rank the top 12, but the top 8 will be only drivers left in the Chase and the remaining four can be anyone (previous Chase drivers OR someone who was never in the Chase). This type format will continue all the way down to the final (so in the end the Champion will be number one and the other eleven can be anyone in the Sprint Cup.

We're down to 8 Chase drivers so only those 8 are in the top 8 and the bottom four can be anyone.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 32 (Week 31)

  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-3)- Was the Kevin Kurt thing just a misunderstanding? I have no idea still if Kurt bumped Kevin in celebration or what it was, but Kevin sure came in like that raging bull. KH and crew are not one to be messed with when it comes to Championship contender once again this year.
  2. Jimmie Johnson (LW-1)- Quietly JJ also hung back and stayed out of trouble. Why risk tearing up a car or worse, injury, when you're locked in? He has run very well this Chase and not enough people have been talking about him.
  3. Kyle Busch (LW-2)- Try and tell me the guy who runs Xfinity races and wins a ton wasn't pissed off he was sitting back and playing it safe on Sunday. Sunday was his first non top 10 since Darlington when he finished 11th, yeah I'm sure he loved it.
  4. Matt Kenseth (LW-4)- Kenseth's top 10 streak was shorter by one race then Kyles, only dating to Chicagoland, but I'm sure he wasn't having fun hanging back, either. But, Championship teams do what they have to to have a shot.
  5. Joey Logano (LW-7)- Gritty win by a team that needed the boost. It's crazy to think the No. 22 only has two wins after Sundays trip to Victory Lane. They still can win the Championship and will have the help of the No. 2 along the way.
  6. Denny Hamlin (LW-12)- The No. 11 need ALL of that finish on Sunday. They actually tied Austin Dillon for the eighth and final spot, but got the transfer because they finished a round best 3rd. This round plays much better for Hamlin and he could bounce back with a trip to the final four.
  7. Kurt Busch (LW-8)- I can't believe Kurt is this low with how consistent he has been, but he just hasn't had the same speed as some of these other guys. He can still points his way to the final four, but it will be tough.
  8. Carl Edwards (LW-6)- Carl just keeps doing what he has to round by round. Can that continue? We will see.
  9. Austin Dillon (LW-10)- One spot, at Talladega. Just one. I haven't looked at the results but I am sure he finished mere fractions of a second behind Aric Almirola. It was one heck of an effort by a team most counted out when the Chase started.
  10. Chase Elliott (LW-11)- Fun run by Chase, who remember is just a rookie... He was fast to finish this season but he just couldn't find his way past the front seven guys playing follow the leader on Sunday.
  11. Kyle Larson (LW-NR)- We still only have four spots open to grab in these rankings, but Kyle got the nod for two top 6 finishes in this round (three races). If CGR can find speed and he can start mixing in taking care of his equipment (meaning not running it into the wall driving the wheels off), then he might end up competing for a Championship sooner rather then later.
  12. Brad Keseloski (LW-9)- BK needed a win, or a very good finish at the very least, and his engine blew up while trying. Tough spot deciding to get trash off and when it's too late. The No. 2 couldn't stop finding it, either. Not a good way to end a great season, but that's how it goes.
Dropped Out: Martin Truex Jr (LW-5) - Does he deserve to drop out? Nope. I'd really say we have a 12a and 12b, but that's not how my rankings work. He was another very fast car in 2016 that just couldn't get by some bad finishes in a round.

2016 NASCAR Week 32 Preview: Talladega

Alabama 500

Talladega Superspeedway

Image result for Hellmann's 500

By Richard Tix

The comforting thing about Talladega is it's a place anyone can win at on any given weekend. An underdog story can be made or a clutch moment to move on in the Chase can be had. However, that is where most of the comforts end when talking about this high banking superspeedway.

In once sense, a track like this is a great spot for Brad Keselowski (or any driver) to make up some points and possibly even win (see 2014 Chase) and move on. At the same time Dega is a place where one wrong move, or one wrong move by a guy in front of you, or one wrong move by the guy next to you (I think you get the point), will leave you picking up the pieces (literally for track crews).

So, as the second round comes to a close and twelve drivers bunch up together and bump each other for eight spots, they also have to look out for the big one. The same move that can lead you to the front of the pack and take you to Victory Lane is also the same one that can leave you answering questions in the garage about how your season just ended.

So, which will it be for each of these twelve drivers (yes, I know two are locked in for next round)? Will they be pumping their fist in VL, or hanging their heads waiting for the 2017 season to get underway so they have a chance at redemption?

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good
  • Brad Keselowski- If you can call anything a sure thing at Dega right now (hint: you can't), BK would be the closest thing to it. A few more wins and his name can be thrown around with the Earnhardts here (Dale Sr has 10 wins, Dale Jr has 6, BK only has 4 so it's a ways away still).
  • Clint Bowyer- Even with a craptastic car (yes I made that word up), Bowyer finished 7th earlier in the year here. That was after starting 34th (which means nothing at Dega).
  • Kevin Harvick- Harvick just seems to be consistent here. He has six straight top 15's and three of those are top 10's. For a track like this, those top 15's means days you can hang your hat on.
The Middle
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr- Don't look now, but Ricky is actually pretty good at making his moves around Talladega. In only six career starts he has three top 10's and all but one was 16th or better. This is your longshot/sleeper this weekend.
The Bad
  • Kasey Kahne- Talladega serves a large test to a guy who has quietly been running very well as of late. In the last eight races here Kasey only has one top 10.
  • AJ Allmendinger- Im not sure why, but every time a driver I like is near AJ on a superspeedway I get a bit nervous. Maybe it's because he always ran into me on NASCAR 14 at these same track, or maybe it's because he only has one top 10 (a top 5) in 13 races here,
  • Carl Edwards- 24 career races and only six top 10 finishes. Those don't seem to be numbers that associate with a name like Carl Edwards. What's worse? Nine of those have been 30th or worse..
We're skipping the normal track facts here this week. Talladega is such a crazy place that every driver will go through up's and down's which makes the fun facts not as fun (or easy to get). Instead, here is an old Behind the Wall article on "The Big One" here at Talladega.

2016 NASCAR Pit Road Week 10: Talladega

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Geico 500

By Richard Tix

"Demolition derby." I missed the race and kept up to date on my phone on Sunday but if fan's had one phrase to use for the Geico 500 I think demolition derby would some it up. 35 cars were involved in some kind of incident on Sunday which means only five cars were left clean.

One of those cars was Brad Keselowski who had arguable the best car of the day. The more concerning thing was how many big wrecks happened. Chris Buescher and Matt Kenseth both took off like planes on Sunday in two different incidents.

Truth be told I missed Buescher's wreck and still haven't seen a highlight of it but I did see Kenseth's. Sometimes cars just get turned a certain way that flaps just can't stop the car from getting lift. That isn't to say we shouldn't look further into NASCAR safety, but I think sometime's its just the nature of racing at high speeds.

The fact that Dega and Daytona are what some fans always ask for (close side by side racing all race long), but then they also say they hate what Dega has become rubs me the wrong way. The simple nature of Dega with restrictor plates, tight action, and the dependency on draft are what create a feeling of pressure to push to the front. At some point all of these guys think "it's go time" and that's when things get crazy.

Sometimes guys will sit back and it ends up being too late to "go." In those cases the wrecks and action are a bit more laid back, but sometimes things happen like Sunday. Everyone want's to go at the same time and the smallest little mistake causes a huge wreck. Unlike at other tracks, those little errors when we have little margin for error create huge messes.

We still have two superspeedway tracks left on the season. Lets see how they play out before we jump to conclusion that this will always happen. Not that I don't want to look for safer ways to run these races, but this has been the beast that is superspeedways for a long time now.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 10 (Week 9)
  1. Kyle Busch (LW-2)- Take out the wreck at Bristol and Kyle Busch has two wins and four top 2's in four races (Bristol he finished 38th with his wreck). So far in 2016 he has been the Harvick of last year (but remember Harvick lost the Championship to Kyle). Finish: 2nd
  2. Carl Edwards (LW-1)- It was Talladega so a ton of these guys will be getting a slide this week in the rankings. Carl is one of those guys. He did have three straight dominate races before Sunday. Finish: 35th
  3. Kevin Harvick (LW-3)- Just based on points (no wins included) Harvick is still your 2016 points leader. That is mostly because he is still notching top 10's and hasn't had a single finish higher then 17th. Finish: 15th
  4. Kurt Busch (LW-7)- Kurt now has four straight top 10's and somehow escaped the poor finish at Dega crew. It still seems that he is just a step behind when it comes to winning, but I think most teams are other than JGR. Finish: 8th
  5. Jimmie Johnson (LW-4)- JJ has two wins and is fourth in overall points (not including the wins). He might be having the best season behind anyone at JGR (Harvick is in that discussion as well). Finish: 22nd
  6. Chase Elliott (LW-11)- First, can we talk about how good Chase has been so far in his rookie season? He now has six top 10's and three top 5's. Next can we talk about how good he is at superspeedways already? He has taken both poles (Daytona and Talladega) and for most of both races didn't look like a rookie out there. The top of these rankings are top heavy, but if he keeps putting himself in a place to win late in the race then he could get to the top 5. Finish: 5th
  7. Brad Keselowski (LW-10)- BK is now the fourth driver to notch multiple wins and only the second non JGR driver to do so. Sunday was his fourth Talladega win which is also the location of his first career win. Finish: 1st
  8. Joey Logano (LW-6)- JoLo ran most of the day in the top 10 but faded and then was involved in a late wreck ruining his day. On another note, he and Kenseth stirred the pot again just before NASCAR heads to Kansas where this all started in 2015, fun! Finish: 25th
  9. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-5)- Weird season for Junior. Both superspeedway races he was involved in a wreck and finishes 36th or higher. I think "Amelia"may finally be put to rest after two bad outings to start 2016. Finish: 40th
  10. Martin Truex Jr (LW-8)- Truex hasn't been as good as he finished 2015 or as great as he started 2016 but in the last few races he has shown some life of consistency. Finish: 13th
  11. Trevor Bayne (LW-NR)- I think this is a Behind the Wall first, Bayne cracks the top 12. Since Texas (four races) he has three top 15's, two top 10's, and a top 5. That doesn't even mention that his lone finish outside the top 15 was a 17th place finish at Richmond. It very early, but he is currently 16th in points.
  12. Jamie McMurray (LW-NR)- Sunday was McMurrays first top 5 of 2016 and only his second top 10. He does have eight finishes of 17th or better in ten races, though. The full speed just isn't there right now and not sure if it will be, but this consistency may still get him a Chase spot like in 2015. Finish: 5th
Dropped Out: Denny Hamlin (LW- 9) and Matt Kenseth (LW-12)
Just Missed: Austin Dillon
