2015 NASCAR Buy or Sell: Kyle Busch

Buy or Sell Kyle Busch in 2015

By Richard Tix

It is getting to be that time of year again in the NASCAR world, the time of year where Chase dreams are won and lost week by week. Many drivers have already locked there Chase spot up with a win during the 2015 season, but Kyle Busch has more work to do.

Even with two wins, he still is not locked into the 2015 Chase. Why is that? Well, because Chase eligible drivers have to be in the top 30 of the points standings when the Chase hits the schedule. After missing a bunch of races after his XFINITY wreck at Daytona to start the year, Kyle was set back substantially in the points standings.

That being said, lets look at the reasons you should buy into his chance at the Chase and even winning the Chase and the reason's you should not buy in.

Reason's to Buy In
  • In just two races back after missing 11 to start the season, Kyle Busch already has two wins. Those two wins come in the last 3 races so he is starting to get on a roll. During that roll he closed the gap on Cole Whitt in the points standings and is now just 87 points out of 30th.
  • Cole Whitt: That's reason two...The guys between he and 30th position are Whitt, Gilliland, Moffitt, Bowman, and Annett. Between all of these guys they total 86 races and only one top 10 and only four top 15's (almost all at the Daytona 500). Kyle only needed seven races to notch two wins, two top 5's, and three top 10's (four top 15's). So, the competition isn't very stiff on his was to the top 30.
  • NASCAR has 8 races left before the 2015 Chase starts which means Kyle has 8 races to catch up. NASCAR heads to NHMS, Indianapolis, Pocono, Watkins Glen, Michigan, Britstol, Darlington, and Richmond. He has wins at 6 of the 8 remaining tracks (No wins at Indy or Pocono). At those 6 he has a total of 14 career wins at the Cup level. He may not have a win at Indy yet, but he does have an average finish of 10.6 there. If he can avoid bad finishes at Pocono (18.3 avg finish) and Michigan (20 avg finish) and pull off another win or two he should lock himself into the top 30 with ease. At the same 8 final tracks Kyle has an avg finish of 14th or better at 6 of them.
  • The biggest reason to tune into the hype train that is Kyle Busch making the Chase and maybe even a run at the title? Kyle just know's how to win. He is now up to 31 career wins at the young age of 30 (yes, more wins then years old). Of current drivers only four are in front of him for total wins (all older: Gordon, Johnson, Stewart, and Kenseth). At a current pace he wins 8.3% of the races he is a part of. So, between the simple fact he know's how to win at this level and that he has 14 career wins at the next 8 tracks it is easy to see him winning at least once before the Chase starts.

Reason's to Sell
  • Missing 11 races put Kyle Busch in a huge hole to come back from. The more wins he has the easier each step is, but if he doesn't win in the next 8 races he will have to stay very consistent throughout. I believe he has to have an average finish of about 17th the rest of the way (Courtesy of PJ Walsh FantasyNASCARPreview.com) to get to the top 30. Kyle Busch does have a career average finish of 15.3, but with this much pressure any misstep will create a larger hole. This hole is the biggest reason to not buy into Kyle Busch coming back in time. Can it be done? Sure, but it wont be easy and each week will be a roller coaster.
  • Kyle Busch's track record. Even if Kyle gets to the Chase, will he actually compete? It would take a hot run to get into the Chase so the easy answer is yes, he will make a run. But, in his career Kyle hasn't exactly been the closer. When the Chase wraps up he finds himself much farther out of the points then when the Chase started. Can he actually close?
  • On that same note, Kyle Busch has been known more has a regular season Champion then a playoff champion. In 2013 I thought he was turning the corner after finishing 4th in points, but then last year luck got in the way and he got left out of the final 8 after Dega. With the new Chase format anything can happen and he could be out in the first round.
  • 8 races, 8 races are left. Anything can happen in that time including just a few "wrong place, wrong time" type deals. If he gets into trouble in a few races then that average finish he needs will start going back up. If it starts climbing will the stress get to him? A season long stress of trying to win and get into the top 30 is nothing compared to an 8 race pressure cooker. Will Kyle keep his composure is something does happen? He has a past track record of sometimes letting his emotion's get the best of him. Pressure week by week to make the right calls will hold a huge piece of Kyle Busch's Chase chances.

2015 NASCAR Behind the Wall Hot Laps: Week 10

Driver Merry-Go-Round and a Driver's Comeback

By Richard Tix

Hot Laps will be a weekly article on news in the world of NASCAR. I will write these articles any weeks where I have a thought or opinion on NASCAR news that is worth sharing. So, this could be an every week thing, or just every few weeks. Its an opinion piece, so it is open to discussion and debate and would love to here your thoughts.

It has been a few weeks since we have dove into the "Hot Laps" article. It's been a busy time and some topics I just didn't want to touch on on NBTW. This week we will dive back in. For the most part we will just get a catch up on what has been going on in the NASCAR world.

Driver Carousel

This season many crazy things have happened. A lot of these things have revolved around drivers having to switch seats in Cup cars. First Kyle Busch got injured in an XFINITY race at Daytona. Then Brian Vickers again had heath scares that took him out of a seat. Those incidents moved David Ragan into the #18, Moffitt into the #34, and then Moffitt back to the #55 and Chris Buescher into the #34.

That's not even mentioning Kurt Busch being suspended to start the season and Regan Smith filling in for him or even when Kyle Larson fainted at a autograph session and Smith filling in for him. Oh, and lets not get started on when Denny Hamlin started the race at Bristol, had a rain delay, and he couldn't get back in leaving Erik Jones in the #11.

Let's just say its been a crazy season thus far...

Well, next up Michael Waltrip will make his normal Talladega start this week in the #55, but starting next week at Kansas David Ragan will step into the #55 for MWR for the remainder of the 2015 season. That leaves the #18 open again. Erik Jones will fill in for Ragan who is filling in for Kyle Busch until Kyle comes back (if he does in 2015).

That leaves the #34 a week to week ride for the rest of 2015 until they announce a plan for a full time driver IF they keep running the car week to week. It has been a crazy start to the year and all indications show it may not end soon.

Kurt Busch's Comeback

Kurt Busch's past is well documented and it came up again this season after he sat out three races to start the year. But, I am not going to get into that right here and right now. I will not focus on what he did, didn't do, or has done in his past. What is important is that this man was pretty far down even going back to last season.

2014 was his first with SHR, but he actually had a worse season than he did in 2013 with lower funded Furniture Row. Going into the 2014 season it looked like another one of his many second chances was finally going to turn his career back around. But his rough season and then off the track issues stopped him from getting back onto of everything personally and career wise.

He got back into the car at Phoenix and seemed like the only one who had much for Harvick (other than Keselowski). He was running the same set up at Harvick and looked just as fast at times. He finished PHX with a 5th place finish and rolled that momentum into a Pole at Auto Club. The next four races (including Auto Club) he led laps in each which leads us to this past week at Richmond.

At Richmond Kurt started 3rd on the day and got out front often. He ended the day leading 291 of 400 laps (which was the most in one race in his career) and took the #41 SHR Chevy to Victory Lane. No matter how you look at Kurt Busch as a person or driver, it was a come back story after a terrible 2014 season where he averaged an 18th place finish all year long. So far in 2015, Kurt has shown that he and the #41 team have a fast cars week to week so he could be a factor down the road when the Chase rolls around.

Talladega Qualifying

This week NASCAR heads to Talladega for the season's second Superspeedway race of the season. Earlier this year (obviously) NASCAR was at Daytona for the 500, which Joey Logano won. The bigger story that week/weekend might have been the qualifying debacle. With it being the biggest race of the season and the first one of the year, when things went wrong people pointed right at the qualifying format.

At Daytona, the group qualifying format was applied which NASCAR had not done to many times at the plate tracks. Things got heated early when McDowell and Bowyer got into it early in qualifying which left a bunch of carnage behind.

So, after all was said an done, NASCAR announced a few weeks later that they would switch the format on plate tracks back to a closer format to one car on the track at a time. Teams will now make two lap passes but the next car will get on the track quicker than they did before when NASCAR also did single car runs. NASCAR is hoping this reduces the risk of wrecks when drivers are in groups at these plate tracks and still speeds it up a bit.

Talladega will be the test to see how this works after a mess at Daytona. Some liked Daytona, but others hated it. So, NASCAR listened and now I will wait and listen to see if fans opinions will have changed?

2015 Week 6 Preview: Martinsville

STP 500

Martinsville Speedway

By Richard Tix

The end of last weeks race at Auto Club was entertaining to say the least. Some fans loved it, some hated it, and everyone had an opinion about it. That's because it was a race that finished under controversy.

But, this week I am ready to move on from all of that and focus on the next race. After all, sometimes its just good that people are talking about NASCAR. It shows how passionate fans are, but at the same time brings out some of the negative side in people that tends to happen in sports and competition.

So this week NASCAR heads to Martinsville and four drivers have pretty much locked up a Chase spot. Will Martinsville bring a fifth? Jimmie Johnson has already won this year and will most likely be a favorite, but guys like Dale Earnhardt Jr, Denny Hamlin, and Jeff Gordon have not and may all get a chance on Sunday.

Things are sure to heat up here as it is the shortest track on the Cup schedule (0.526 miles). Last year Joey Logano set a new qualifying record that will be interesting to watch this week (18.898 sec, 100.201 MPH). With this being a short track his record may stand this weekend, but it will be a story to watch.

The other interesting thing to watch is NASCAR will now be transitioning back to some shorter tracks in the coming weeks. After starting out the year with mostly intermediate tracks, NASCAR will now see Martinsville, Bristol, and Richmond in the coming weeks (Texas mixed in). So, will a different driver not named Harvick start to get on a roll? Who will it be?

The Good
  • Jimmie Johnson- 8 career wins for JJ ties him with Gordon. JJ has 22 top 10's top 10's in 26 career starts at Martinsville to go along with 18 top 5's. So, needless to say, JJ is pretty good here.
  • Jeff Gordon- It is still yet to be seen who will win #9 at Martinsville first, Gordon or JJ. Gordon is done running full time after 2015 so these maybe his last two shots at it. Last time NASCAR was here he finished second and has 21 top 10's in his last 24 starts here.
  • Clint Bowyer- Bowyer has 6 straight top 10's (including 3 top 5's in that time). He also has 7 top 10's in his last 8 races here. You can almost count on a top 10 from Bowyer if he stays clean at Martinsville.
  • Extra Credit- Denny Hamlin
The Middle
  • Matt Kenseth- In 30 career starts Kenseth only has 11 top 10 finishes at Martinsville. However, three of those have been in his last three starts and he hasn't finished higher than 14th in his last six races.
The Bad
  • Kyle Larson- Only three starts here, but in those three he has had two bad luck occurences. Do I expect him to stay on this list? No. But its still worth noting he has had some bad luck, and his one other race was a 27th place finish. He also has yet to start in the top 15.
  • Michael McDowell- I hate putting the "little guys" on this list because being underfunded puts them at a disadvantage, but having 0 top 10's and the worst track average of any current CUp driver (36.6) will not excuse you from the "Bad."
  • Casey Mears- In his last 11 starts at Martinsville Mears has only 3 top 20's and 1 top 15. When we are looking at smaller teams its really important to look at the 20-25 finish range to judge them on (because they just don't have the same funding). He has really struggled here since leaving Hendrick Motorsports.
Track Stats
  • 8 straight Chevy wins here at Martinsville
  • Other then Denny Hamlin (Toyota) Chevy has won 17 straight races. That's 17 of the past 21 races. If you add in Rusty Wallace's win in 2004 (Dodge) its 19 of the past 24.
  • The race has been won from the Pole 4 times in the last 13 races.
  • Most cautions was 21 in 2004 for 127 laps.
  • The farthest back a winner has started from was 36th (Kurt Busch) in 2002 (10/20/2002). Kurt won in 2014 after starting 22nd (3/30/2014) and Dale Jr won after starting 23 (10/26/14)
