2018 NASCAR Pit Road Week 11: Dover

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

By Richard Tix

Yes, the rankings are late this week so let's just get to the good stuff below!

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 11 (Week 10)
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-3)- A little flip flop at the top. Harvick now has a series best four wins and dominated at Dover.
  2. Kyle Busch (LW-1)- The car issue just after half way wasn't Kyle's fault, but with Harvick being so good this week Rowdy loses the top spot, for now.
  3. Joey Logano (LW-2)- Consistently good, but not always great has been JoLo's 2018 season so far. 13th at Dover will be one to forget, but it also wasn't a huge blow to this team.
  4. Clint Bowyer (LW-5)- Bowyer lead 40 laps, finished second, and is having fun again at the Cup level.
  5. Kurt Busch (LW-6)- Kurt quietly keeps chugging along and posting good numbers. This week he posted back to back top fives after last weeks runner up at Dega.
  6. Denny Hamlin (LW-4)- Hamlin spent a lot of his day around the top ten and ended up finishing (7th)  better then his average position (12th).
  7. Jimmie Johnson (LW-7)- At least JJ didn't suck at Dover, because if he did we would really have to start worrying. Instead Jimmie notched his third top ten in the last four races (12th at Dega).
  8. Chase Elliott (LW-8)- JJ and Chase seem to be getting a grip around the same time. However, lately Elliott has been turning nothing's into something's. Eventually he might actually have it all come together so he doesn't have to turn a dud into a late surge for a good finish.
  9. Brad Keselowski (LW-11)- BK got back on track at Dover after leading 108 laps and finishing 6th. However, they have just been too streaky to jump too many other drivers for now.
  10. Kyle Larson (LW-9)- Admittedly, Larson shouldn't be this low. I'm just not sure where to put him and he has been streaky most the year. Larson fans, get mad if you would like...
  11. Martin Truex Jr (LW-10)- One race down on the Truex come back tour (fourth). Now, can he carry that momentum into the next race?
  12. Daniel Suarez (LW-12)- Some of the social media hate I saw was sickening after Suarez's great finish on Sunday. But, I also saw a lot of positives from the NASCAR fan base backing up diversity in our sport. Oh, and Suarez has three straight top tens.
Dropped Out: No One
Just Missed: Ryan Blaney and Aric Almirola

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

By Richard Tix

NASCAR leaves Dover as four drivers drop out of the 2017 Playoffs. We say goodbye to Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Austin Dillon, and Ryan Newman (not really, they will still be around...). However, Behind the Wall is also dropping back down to it's usual 12 drivers in the power rankings and for the next three races the 12 drivers will only consist of the playoff drivers. It won't be until the next round where the last four spots are up for grabs to anyone (top eight will still be playoff drivers). So, "Happy Trails to You" for now... Let's get one with it below!

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 29 (Week 28)
  1. Kyle Busch (LW-2)- Even though Truex will have a 19 point cushion on Kyle, Rowdy gets the nudge here for winning back to back races while also collecting two poles this first round. These two are the head of the class right now.
  2. Martin Truex Jr (LW-1)- 1st, 5th, and 4th, not bad considering during that 5th place finish he was involved in a wreck. Barring a meltdown, or terrible luck, the No. 78 should be locked into Homestead.
  3. Kyle Larson (LW-3)- Larson led 137 laps (one less than Chase Elliott) on Sunday.Larson hands down has been the biggest threat to the Toyota duo above all season.
  4. Brad Keselowski (LW-5)- Overlooked? Probably. Still starting 39 points behind Truex in the first round? Yup. It truly is a fight to just get to the last race where it's 1 v 1 v 1 v 1 straight up.
  5. Matt Kenseth (LW-6)- Kenseth may reset 11th after the first round, but he had a nice first round to get him here (9th, 3rd, and 11th).
  6. Denny Hamlin (LW-4)- Sunday was bad luck, but Hamlin has seemed to have been fading a bit while Busch and Truex are surging. Luckily, all it takes is one race if you can get to Homestead.
  7. Jimmie Johnson (LW-7)- JJ is just laying in the weeds once again. Since Richmond he has finishes of 8th, 8th, 14th, and 3rd. He isn't setting the world on fire, but he has done what it takes to move on.
  8. Chase Elliott (LW-10)- What a run Sunday by Chase. It was another strong run that came up short of a win, but it was still good to see a finish like that from the No. 24.
  9. Jamie McMurray (LW-11)- McMurray did what he had to in round one, finishing 10th, 16th, and then 9th at Dover while on the cut line. This round does have Talladega, so could JMac surprise?
  10. Kevin Harvick (LW-8)- A forgettable round other than race one for Harvick. He can bounce back and resets 6th in the standings 12 points above 12th (McMurray).
  11. Ryan Blaney (LW-9)- Consistency has evaded Blaney and the No. 21 all year and it might be what does them in during the playoffs. For now, they made it to the second round. It's always nice to see a team like the Wood Brothers still fighting.
  12. Ricky Stenhouse Jr (LW-12)- That was not a good round (25th, 15th, and 19th) for Ricky, but he squeaked by and gets a fresh start. Thanks to his playoff points he is eight in the standings, but its only a ten point lead on 12th at the moment.

What to Watch For?

Will Jimmie Johnson Add to His Dover Legacy?
  • JJ already has the most career wins of any NASCAR Cup driver (11) so his legacy is set in stone here, but can he add to it? On top of that he has lead the most career laps here (3,100 total), is tied for the fifth most top fives (16), and the 6th most top tens (22). Each stat he can add to and move up the ranks in what will be his 32nd career Dover start. You may say you dislike JJ, but it's important to realize what we're watching historically while it is happening.
Playoff Cut Line
  • Right now the cut line looks like this: Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Austin Dillon trail Jamie McMurray by 9 points (Jamie is safe as of now). Ryan Newman trails JMac by 10, Kurt Busch trails JMac by 26, and Kasey Kahne trails JMac by 30 points. That's five people trailing McMurray and only four get cut. On top of that fact, Jamie isn't even safe, nor is anyone above him. However, the likely outcome is that the four drivers cut this round come from this list: McMurray, Stenhouse Jr., Dillon, Newman, Busch, or Kahne. Being the first round the focus will be on the cut line and not show advances.

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good
  • Chase Elliott- Three Dover starts and three Dover top fives. Not bad, but can he finally get to Victory Lane?
  • Jimmie Johnson- Jimmie won here at Dover earlier this year, can he sweep 2017? The last time he swept Dover was 2009.
  • Martin Truex Jr- In Martins last five Dover races he has led a lap in four of them and a total of 467 laps. He won this playoff race last year and is running strong to finish the season.
The Middle
  • Kyle Larson- Larson finished runner up to Johnson earlier this year, but had a winning car. A few more bonus playoff points would go a long way into getting the No. 42 to Homestead.
The Bad
  • Ryan Blaney- Small sample size alert: but Blaney's last two finishes here have been marred with poor luck. He also hasn't qualified very well here, either.
  • AJ. Allmendinger- Seems like we haven't talked about AJ in awhile, but after the stats coming that might be better. In 19 career starts here AJ has three top 10's and only four top 15's.
  • Kurt Busch- Dover is not a good spot for Kurt to need a strong finish. Since he lone win here (11 races), Kurt has one top ten, three top 15's, and only six top 20's.
About the Track: Dover
Track Stats
  • Richard Petty won the first 3 of 4 races at Dover, including the first two in 1969 and 1970
  • The race has been won from the Pole 13 times.
  • Kyle Petty won after starting 37th in 1995, the furthest back a Dover race has been won
  • The most cautions was 16 in 1993, Rusty Wallace eventually won the race
  • Current drivers with more then 1 Dover win (Jimmie Johnson-10, Ryan Newman-3, Matt Kenseth-3, Kyle Busch-2, and Martin Truex Jr-2)
  • Current drivers with one Dover win (Brad Keselowski, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kevin Harvick, Derrike Cope (Part Time)-1, and Kurt Busch)
  • Most career wins at Dover: Jimmie Johnson (11), Richard Petty (7), and Bobby Allison (7).
  • Most career top 5's at Dover: Mark Martin (24) followed by Dale Earnhardt (19)
  • Most career top 10's at Dover: Mark Martin (33), Richard Petty (26), and Ricky Rudd (26)
  • Most career pole awards at Dover: David Pearson (6), Rusty Wallace (5), and Mark Martin (5)

Elko Speedway Recap:

Stand. Alone. Racing.
Short tracks. Grassroots.
These are the things many NASCAR fans have been beating the drum for lately (heck, for awhile).

If you were paying attention Saturday then you know that ARCA and Elko Speedway put on one heck of a show Saturday night. If you weren't, well it's ok because before getting into the racing on Sunday I am going to put a little focus on Elko Speedway to catch you up (my home track in Minnesota).

Let's start out by being fair, ARCA produces a ton of good shows as do other levels of racing that tend to hit more "local" trackssuch as the Super Late Model's that have featured Ty Majeski and Harrison Burton as of late. However, Saturday was a showcase of why NASCAR needs to get back to spotlighting these series AND the Xfinity and Truck series in there own stand alone events.

Saturday night at Elko was a finish that will be remembered for awhile for race fans who were lucky enough to catch it on MAVTV, watched some of my periscope (some short videos here), or were physically there at the track. During the closing laps of the Shore Lunch 250 Austin Theriault (#52 for Ken Schrader) gave a bump and run on Christian Eckes (#15 Venturini Motorsports) and took the lead, but the battle wasn't over just yet. On the final lap in turn's three and four with a four way battle for the win Eckes (second) tried the same move on Austin (first) which brought them side by side down the front stretch of the short 3/8th mile Elko Speedway and gave race fans a finish where both cars crossed within inches of each other. Austin nudged Christian for the win and a trip to VL (well, a VL created on the front stretch for fans to see and listen to the post race interview).

Right behind them Riley Herbst (#18 Joe Gibbs Racing) and Zane Smith (#55 Venturini Motorsports) got into each other and caused a huge puff of smoke to cover the track behind them. A few others were caught up in the last lap carnage as you might expect on such a short track. Zane was taken to a local hospital but was released later when Venturini Motorsports gave an official release via twitter.

The race gave us a look back at what good hard short track racing has and always will be. Both Austin and Christian walked away knowing they gave it all they had but didn't take each other out in the process. These types of track's and event's are what many fans think are missing in today's truck (and Xfinity) series. If NASCAR could bring back some stand alone races at short tracks around the country it could really help booster the lack of shine they tend to get on a given weekend plus help these local tracks create a destination event.

If anything, Saturday night showed that Minnesota has a gem that many people had no idea existed which ARCA helped bring to light. Elko isn't the only gem around either, these track's are all over and if ARCA, Xfinity, or the truck series branched out and had more stand alone event's I could only see it helping racing as a whole. If each series down the line is stronger because of it, so will Cup down the line.

Dover Recap:

As always, Saturday wasn't the only racing of the weekend. Cup was back at Dover International Speedway on Sunday which was the cherry on top of my own personal weekend that included the trip to Elko Speedway and a local Mopar car show (Mopars in the Park). Dover is a track I have towards the top of my list and in my opinion it produced this weekend.

Early on Miles the Monster took over and caused a ton of action which continued on for the whole race. As the day went on the track opened up and even without a substance to help grip seemed to have two lanes (maybe small lanes, but two none the less). The day's story lines were dominated for the most part by Martin Truex Jr, Kyle Larson, and Jimmie Johnson (mis in Ty Dillon for a late call which lead to him leading the race for 27 laps). Larson (241 led) and Truex (102 led) dominated most of the day, but not in full run away fashion like some of JJ's old wins. JJ started the day in back and made quick work of the field to get up front and remind Larson and Truex who the king of Dover still is.

Though he only led 7 laps on the day, JJ still had one of the top cars on the day. The 48 team was helped by a late caution that bunched the group up and ran Larson thru some speedy dry, but he may have got to him anyways on a "clean" track. Sundays win by Johnson was his 83rd of his career which includes 11 at Dover (which is the most by any driver current or retired). We truly are watching one of the sports best so just realize you're watching history before it is history..

Overall, Dover gave us fun hard racing with plenty of strategy calls and late drama to pass as a good race no matter what the detractors might say. However, once again a good race won't be the front page news as things like the "overtime line" are bound to top the headlines.

Sure, the overtime line is something many fans can't get behind, but lets look at this race for the competitiveness on the track and how well the product seemed to have produced and not another rule that fan's love to cling on and bash. I mean, sure it's nice to finish at something called the start/finish line, but we would have wrecked most likely anyways and torn up half the field no matter where the official line was on Sunday. Don't yell at NASCAR for something that the driver's thought was a good idea after Harvick created a hot mess at Talladega a few years back, its not just one person or entities fault for the rule being in place but rather a lot of forces at play that created a drama filled finish at Dover on Sunday.

Pit Road Power Rankings: Week 13 (Week 12)
  1. Martin Truex Jr (LW-1)- Truex is the head of the class right now. Your points leader, your playoff points leader, your led laps leader, and your top ten leader.
  2. Kevin Harvick (LW-2)- Quiet day for Harvick that still led to a third straight top. However, after leading laps in seven straight races, he didn't find the front all day at Dover.
  3. Jimmie Johnson (LW-7)- 83 wins, 11 at Dover, 7 Championships. Not much else has to be said about JJ. He now has a season leading 3 wins that gives him 15 playoff points (second only to Truex).
  4. Kyle Larson (LW-6)- Larson was really, really good on Sunday and had the car to beat. Unfortunately for him, the best car for a whole race doesn't always win late in the race given the situations.
  5. Kyle Busch (LW-3)- Kyle went through it all on Sunday but climbed out of the hole by mid race. He fell off late, but still had a productive day worth of info they will use in the playoffs.
  6. Jamie McMurray (LW-5)- Seventh on Sunday, the last time JMac finished worse then 12th was Martinsville (the sixth race of 2017).
  7. Denny Hamlin (LW-9)- Back to back top tens for Denny, maybe he is starting to turn the corner?
  8. Brad Keselowski (LW-4)- How far do you keep dropping back luck? Last week he was taken out early and I dropped him four spots, this week I am doing the same. If he goes three for three bad luck may take him out of the top 12 even though he has been fast when he is on track.
  9. Matt Kesneth (LW-12)- Kenseth has just been average this year, it's about time he breaks out. I really thought it would be Dover, but he had to settle for a 13th place finish even after a small tussle with Blaney.
  10. Daniel Suarez (LW-NR)- Suarez is really starting to come around and I am not sure how many fans are noticing. a solid 6th place finish on Sunday now gives him four top 15's in the last five races.
  11. Ryan Newman (LW-NR)- Newman spent some time up front late in the race holding back traffic from catching Ty Dillon. Ryan now has back to back top tens to go with his win earlier this season.
  12. Austin Dillon (LW-NR)- Another RCR car on the list and getting mentioned after Dover. Dillon didn't run an amazing race, but he put up a 12th place finish one week after winning CMS.
Dropped Out: Ricky Stenhouse Jr (LW-8), Joey Logano (LW-10), and Clint Bowyer (LW-11)
Just Missed: Chase Elliott and Dale Earnhardt Jr

The Monster Mile where Miles roams. I might be in the minority here, but Dover is up there on my list of favorite tracks on the schedule (RIR, Martinsville, NHMS, Bristol, Auto Club, and WGI all also included in that list). Part of it is that Dover is a mile track on a schedule filled with 1.5 mile tri-ovals. The other part is that it is a unique track that isn't exactly like everything else we see (also why I like NHMS).

All that being said Dover has been getting a bad wrap lately. Some say it's the racing, some say it's the change back in the 90's from asphalt to concrete, and others say it has been Jimmie Johnson's dominance. Dover has a ton of reason's people don't like it, but I think what has lacked at the track is just a mix of all of those things.

If I have learned one thing in NASCAR it is that fan's don't love watching one driver dominate a certain race on Sunday, which leads me to believe they also don't love a guy dominating one track over, and over, and over, and over again year after year.... Sure, I think some of the races have missed the mark, but that's going to happen from time to time. When you mix in one guy being better than everyone else for such a long period of time, people get turned off.

However, JJ hasn't won here in three straight races and the 400 miles will be broken down into stages. With the new points rules the Monster Mile may start to breath new life and turn peoples opinion around about the racing here. The first test? This Sunday.

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good
  • Chase Elliott- It's only been two career starts but both resulted in 3rd place finishes. Elliott really needs a strong run this weekend to get back on track.
  • Jimmie Johnson- Not much needs to be said about JJ here at Dover that most don't know, he's been just that good here.
  • Matt Kenseth- Kenseth would be one of the best current drivers here at Dover if it wasn't for JJ. He won this race last year and also has three straight top tens.
The Middle
  • Brad Keselowski- BK does have a win here (2012) but just hasn't closed the deal as much as he would have liked (two runner ups and four top fives).
The Bad
  • Austin Dillon- Last time out he finished 8th here, but the six before that he had only one top 20 and three top 25's.
  • AJ Allmendinger- 18 starts and only three top tens. Worse yet, only seven of those 18 starts resulted in top 20's.
  • Denny Hamlin- Hamlin's finishes have been all over the place here at Dover. He currently has back to back top tens, but before that he had three straight outside of the top ten, and then before that he had a top ten and two non top tens. What will we get this time?

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

By Richard Tix

First thing's first: being called a hater by someone who has never read your articles or a tweet of your's before is ironic, because that person is as much a hater as you are since they know nothing about you.

I was called a hater on Sunday for calling out TV media (and others) who continue to try and hold onto the notion that Furniture Row is still a small team beating the odds. They're trying to sell the Cinderella story when the story has run it's course.

Why is this wrong? Because Furniture Row is no longer a small team, they're a legit title contender who is practically a fifth Joe Gibbs Racing car. That is no slight to Furniture Row, those guys worked their butt's off to get to this point and overcome the odds.

But, that story ended last season, it's time to stop harping on an old story and move on with the truth.

I like Martin Truex Jr and love that a once small team is expanding and becoming a real threat in NASCAR. However, this is like Gonzaga in college basketball (hopefully some of you get this). They were a media Cinderella darling for a short period of time, but eventually got so big they were a legit contender and the story-line was gone. College media understood that, the fans understood that, and Gonzaga understood that.

Story-lines change and we need to adapt with them. It doesn't make you a hater, it makes you a person who understands the context of situations and how they're forever changing. I try and keep is as real and unbiased as I can here. So, lets hit a few things you need to know if you just started following me.

I run Behind the Wall and try and keep my bias of drivers neutral for rankings and articles.

I am a huge Brad Keseloski fan and have been since he was working his way up. I am a Dodge fan so many of my drivers roots have passed through those ram horns.

I also like Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott (I know, weird situation), Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, and Kyle Larson.

When I first started watching in the 90's I was a young kid and latched onto Jeff Gordon like so many fans did over time.

I was raised a King Petty guy (Mopar). By oldest brother is much older then me (I was an oops) and he was a Petty guy, so I followed suit.

I have since dropped Gordon, Hamlin, and Kahne when people ask me who I am a fan of, but only because my list is huge (well some other things have turned me off from Denny as well). If you asked me, I would say I'm a BK fan, but I really do like a lot of guys. It comes with the nature of writing and just loving the sport.

I do like the newest Chase format and have from the start. However, I have always had a few thing's that I though needed adjustment (adding tracks to the full schedule and changing the final race year to year to name a few).

Even drivers I have disliked in the past have had their up's and downs when compared to m,y opinion. To be honest, I have had some of the best discussions on Twitter with fans of drivers I am not a big fan of.

Last thing: I really wish they would add a few more short tracks (Iowa Speedway being one) and even a road course or two. I have held this opinion for awhile now and will not change it. I think they could drop a few 1.5 mile tracks that have two stops to make room.

Oh, and I am from Minnesota and its tough to find a ton of people who consider themselves NASCAR fans. We're here, but we're hard to find.

Now, onto the Power Rankings.

A review of the Chase Power Ranking Rules:

For the first three races we will have 16 drivers ranked and they will all come from the Chase field. Once NASCAR cuts the field to 12 so will Behind the Wall (again, all Chase drivers). Once we cut to 8 drivers I will still rank the top 12, but the top 8 will be only drivers left in the Chase and the remaining four can be anyone (previous Chase drivers OR someone who was never in the Chase). This type format will continue all the way down to the final (so in the end the Champion will be number one and the other eleven can be anyone in the Sprint Cup.

We're down to 12 Chase drivers so only those 12 are in the rankings this week.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 29 (Week 28)
  1. Martin Truex (LW-1)- Right now Truex is as hot as they come and NASCAR will hit two 1.5 mile tracks in the next three. Why is that important? Well, because he has been pretty darn good on 1.5 mile's while at Furniture Row.
  2. Brad Keselowski (LW-2)- Three top 5's in the Chase, tied for the most wins this season, the most top 5's all year, and stuck in 7th place in the standings. Weird, huh? It's a non factor if BK keeps running this well, these stats will advance him to Miami if he keeps it up.
  3. Kyle Busch (LW-4)- Rowdy led a lap ion every Chase race and also finished in the top 10 all three times. He was runner up at Dover on Sunday and knows how to navigate this Chase.
  4. Joey Logano (LW-5)- It's a bit crazy to think JoLo has only won one race in 2016, but that's where we are right now.
  5. Kevin Harvick (LW-3)- Tough luck on Sunday, but guys it can happen at anytime, why all the Rodney Childers attacking on twitter? Harvick still looks like a title contender and already had a win.
  6. Matt Kenseth (LW-6)- Hard to argue with 9th, 2nd, and 5th place finishes during the Chase. Nice work running well and advancing.
  7. Jimmie Johnson (LW-8)- This season is the lowest on average I have ever had JJ in the rankings, weird. Whats not weird is the No. 48 team is running better in the Chase, but can they keep it going against JGR?
  8. Denny Hamlin (LW-7)- Ten top 10's in the last eleven races, not bad Hamlin. The last time he was out of the top 15 was thirteen races ago, and that was the unpredictable Daytona.
  9. Chase Elliott (LW-9)- Will he win the Championship as a rookie? Odds are 99% no, but two third place finishes this round are impressive stats to add to a great rookie campaign.
  10. Kurt Busch (LW-10)- They survived with a lone top 10 and three top 15's. It wasn't pretty and they will need more this round, but they made it.
  11. Austin Dillon (LW-13)- Yeah, a poor running by CGR helped, but Dillon didn't hurt himself by finishing 8th, and that's what it is all about. Nice work moving on and doing what you could to gain points.
  12. Carl Edwards (LW-11)- I'm not sure what to think of the No 19 team. They would reel off two wins in this round at any moment, but right now they're lagging behind the other four JGR cars (yes, the No. 78 is a fifth JGR car).

Well, well, well, here we are weeks later and I have been slacking a ton on NBTW. Since we last met (Chicagoland Preview) we have had many changes on the NASCAR scene. Personally, I have been a busy man.

Since my trip to Michigan (Pure Michigan 400) I have gone camping out of town (Labor Day), gone to Milwaukee to visit one of my best friends, gone to northern Minnesota on a Fishing trip (Lake Vermilion from Sat - Wed.), and gone to northern Minnesota on a mini vacation with my wife (Duluth/Two Harbors, MN). To shorten the last month: I have had some great camp fires, caught some nice Walleye, took in some fall color on the Superior Shores, and enjoyed one, maybe two nice cold refreshments. I hate missing on weekly content because I know I have a small but awesome following that comes here every week, but sometimes life gets in the way of NASCAR.

So, since MIS I haven't watch more then 25 laps of one single race, but I have tried to keep up to date on Twitter and other media outlets. So, what did I miss?

I missed Martin Truex Jr winning the first Chase race of 2016 at Chicagoland. I also missed that same car fail the LIS inspection by 0.01 and the Twitter blowup following. I actually missed two Truex wins (Darlington), but we will stick to just Chase stuff since I did do a few previews and reviews since then.

Last weekend I was on the road for most of Kevin Harvicks win at NHMS. It locked Harvick into the next round with Truex, but this round is really just formality to get on a roll and drop the bottom four drivers. What I mean is, these two were advancing anyways.

That does make two great races for Truex (lead 141 laps at NHMS and finished 7th). He is setting a good pace to make the final at Miami.

Its not a big surprise to see Chris Buescher, Tony Stewart, Jamie McMurray, and Austin Dillon on the Chase chopping block this week, though it will be a shock if Kyle Larson drops down one spot and misses out on the next round. If you're going to miss a Chase round, I suggest the first round...

Lets get to the Good, Middle, and Bad this week. Again, thanks for following along and I do apologize for getting way behind this Fall. It has been a busy time and when that happens priorities take over.

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**
The Good
  • Kyle Larson- Dover couldn't come at a better time for Larson. He is the first driver above the cut line by five points and has a good history here. In five starts Larson has two top 5's and four top 10's with an average finish of 6.2.
  • Jimmie Johnson- Not much needs to be said here. Ten career wins, 15 top 5's, and 20 top 10's should be enough evidence.
  • Matt Kenseth- Kenseth won here earlier in the season and gets a chance to sweep. He has five top 10's in his last six starts at Dover.
The Middle
  • Ryan Newman- Newman actually has three career wins here, but none since 2004. He has five top 20's in his last six races but only two of them are top 15's (both top 10's actually).
The Bad
  • Austin Dillon- Opposite of Larson, Dillon shouldn't be too happy to see Dover up next. He has yet to find a top 10 in six starts here and only has one top 20. He will need to figure it out this weekend if he wants to advance.
  • Denny Hamlin- In 21 career starts you would think a guy like Hamlin would have more then seven top 10's, but he doesn't at Dover. However, he sis finish 7th in the first stop here of 2016.
  • Kurt Busch- Kurt has actually run pretty well this Chase, but things could stop at Dover. Even though he finished 5th earlier this year, the previous eight races he had a zero top 10's and one top 15.

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Matt Kenseth and Toyota win NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Dover

By Richard Tix

If you didn't like Sundays race at Dover International Speedway I am not sure I can help you here at Behind the Wall. Granted, I missed the beginning of the race (some battles you win, some you lose, and some you are smart enough to know not to fight it when it comes to wife duties), but all I heard was good things.

I did however make it back in plenty of time to catch the end of the race. What a weird day it was especially in regards to what happened to Jimmie Johnson on a late restart. He couldn't get going with transmission issues and wadded up the whole pack (he was restarting on the front outside row).

With a ton of quality cars out or limping around, it left some exciting front of the pack racing. First it was Kyle Larson knocking on Matt Kenseth's door for the lead. Then Chase Elliott helped Kenseth out by battling Larson for second letting Kenseth get a bit of breathing room.

The Larson v Elliott battle was one of the best of the season and showcased some young up and coming talent (you can argue Chase has already arrived). Eventually Larson pulled away again and tracked down Kenseth with just a few laps to go. Larson made a few valiant attempts and even hung out side by side at times, but never had enough to clear Kenseth.

Kenseth finally shook his bad luck and rough runs with his first win of 2016. With the battle for the lead and young talent knocking at the door, the veteran Kenseth once again held them off while always keeping his calm and cool demeanor. It was a well earned win and could sling shot him to a few more before the Chase starts.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 12 (Week 11)
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-2)- Harvick will assume the top spot by virtue of still being the overall points leader (not Chase standings leader) and because he has a dominate car early on at Dover. Finish: 15th
  2. Kyle Busch (LW-1)- One of many victims of "the big one" at Dover, Kyle didn't really seem to have a winning car anyways. Still, he could have notched another top 10 and possibly a top 5 if he stayed clean. Finish: 30th
  3. Kurt Busch (LW-4)- Guys, Kurt Busch is third in overall points (again, not including wins as the Chase points do). He has done that with six straight top 10's including back to back top 5's. Finish: 5th
  4. Chase Elliott (LW-6)- Chase Elliott is the second best driver without a win so far in 2016 (according to points). He only trails Kurt Busch and he is putting himself in a nice position whether he wins a race or not. What a run at the end of the race with the 20 and 42! Finish: 3rd
  5. Brad Keselowski (LW-5)- Since his Talladega win BK has looked a bit more consistent. Even after getting in the middle of the big wreck late at Dover, he still wheeled his beat up No. 2 to a top 10 and actually had some of the fastest lap times late. Finish: 6th
  6. Carl Edwards (LW-4)- Two crashes in three races following his back to back wins earlier this season. With both wins the No. 19 is free to test out plenty of strategies, but this has just been bad luck. Finish: 28th
  7. Martin Truex Jr (LW-8)- Truex has been streaky this year. Big media will lead you to believe he has been consistently good, but for a few races after Atlanta they just weren't that good. That said, he has had some really good cars where he came up short or had bad luck. Finish: 9th
  8. Ryan Blaney (LW-12)- Blaney's rookie year is getting overlooked because Chase has been so good, but Ryan has been holding his own. After a strong run Sunday he now has three straight top 10's. Finish: 8th
  9. Matt Kenseth (LW-NR)- Wow, has it been a weird season for Kenseth or what? After all his up's and down's he finally got his first win of 2016 and was it a memorable one. Kenseth earned all of that Dover win after holding off Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott. Finish: 1st
  10. Jimmie Johnson (LW-7)- Have you paid attention to JJ's last five races? It hasn't been pretty results to say the least. He has three finishes outside the top 20 and four outside the top 15, rough. His transmission helped cause the big one at the end of the race. Finish: 25th
  11. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-9)- Dega and Dover were not kind to Jr during this bad three race stretch for the No. 88. The last four races have been nothing like the first eight and the No. 88 team will look to turn it around after the ASR. Finish: 32nd
  12. Joey Logano (LW-11)- JoLo still doesn't have a win in 2016, but just like Kurt Busch is seems like it should come eventually. The last three races haven't been kind to Joey, but he is still hanging onto eight in points and the third highest driver in the standings without a win (Kurt and Chase ahead of him). Finish: 22nd
Dropped Out: Austin Dillon (LW-10)
Just Missed: Kasey Kahne and Kyle Larson

2016 NASCAR Week 12 Preview: Dover

AAA 400 Drive for Autism

Dover International Speedway

By Richard Tix

One more weekend and one more Sprint Cup race until I am in Charlotte for the All Star Race. It will be my first ASR and first trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway so I am looking forward to it! If you're in Charlotte look out for the Behind the Wall Shirt and hat.

Enough about next weekend, though. This weekend we head to Dover International Speedway where Jimmie Johnson has had a strangle hold on the Spring race. He has won the last two Spring races and three of the last four.

Dover is one of my favorite track's on the schedule because of its unique layout and structure, but the last few years it has lacked the excitement that most of us crave. JJ dominating hasn't helped Dover's case, but maybe the new aero package can bring some life back into the Speedway? Only time will tell if we can start heading the right direction at Dover but the first step might just be beating Jimmie Johnson.

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good
  • Jimmie Johnson- Dover and JJ is like peanut better and jelly, presents on Christmas, and Kevin Harvick and PIR. JJ has 10 career wins at Dover including three in the last five stops here.
  • Kevin Harvick- Harvick has seven top 10's (including a win) in the last ten Dover races. Last year he had a runner up finish and a trip to victory lane.
  • Joey Logano- JoLo has yet to win here at Dover, but he does have nine top 10's in his 14 career starts here. However, in his last eight he has seven top 10's so if JJ got out of the way he might finally notch a win.
The Middle
  • Kyle Larson- Dover has actually been one of Kyle Larson's best tracks early in his career. He has four starts here which fielded results of 11th, 6th, 3rd, and 9th. It's a small sample size but he has a driver rating of 98.0 so far.
The Bad
  • Austin Dillon- Just the opposite of 2014 rookie Kyle Larson, Dover hasn't been one of Dillon's better tracks. In five starts he only has one top 20 (20th). Worse yet, he hasn't run more then 43% of a race in the top 15.
  • Kasey Kahne- Last year he did notch two top 10's in two trips, but his career at Dover hasn't been as good. In 24 career starts he only has seven top 10's and two top 5's.
  • Denny Hamlin- Even though Denny has three Pole awards here, the qualifying results haven't transferred to race success. In 20 career starts he only has six top 10's and three top 5 finishes to go along with an average finish of 19.2.
