NASCAR, just a few days after overhauling there Chase points system, is changing again. This time though must fans should like the new Penalty system. After making huge changes to the Chase system that may end up with more teams gambling and trying to run in the "gray" area NASCAR needed a new way to approach sanctions on teams, drivers, and Crew Chiefs.
So, NASCAR came up with there new 6-Tier Penalty system that they hope will deter teams from going past that gray area. The Six Tier penalty system starts with minor points deductions and fines and increases in severity as infractions go up.
The best part of this new system is that it clears up all of the penalties and infractions. Instead of fans, or even teams and drivers wondering why they were deducted a certain amount of points compaired to a competitors infraction now NASCAR will become more transparent and straight forward with its rules. "The new Deterrence System is going to provide a clear path for our competitors to fully understand the boundaries while shoring up some gray areas which may have been in existence, again, all in an effort to be as transparent as possible," NASCAR's Executive Vice President for Racing Operations Steve O'Donnell said.
The fact that now fans can hear about an infraction and know where/how the team is being penalized is so important in NASCAR moving forward in its new ear. "We believe the new system is easily understood," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president for competition, "and especially lays out exactly what disciplinary actions will be taken depending on the type of technical infraction." Long gone are the days of guessing what kind of points reduction's will come down on teams, we will now know how hard they will hit a teams standings.
NASCAR fans will still have to wait and see how NASCAR handles drivers behavioral actions, as this penalty system is only for technical infractions. Behavioral actions will still be taken on a case by case basis and we will have to wait and see how NASCAR handles drivers talking about the new Chase Points system.
Repeat offenders will also be hit hard, with penalties of up to 50% increases for a team that had already been penalized for the same offense earlier in the same year.
In the end NASCAR fans should like the fact that the new penalty system is more straight forward and easy to understand. We no longer have to guess how NASCAR came up with a certain points deduction. This system adds some consistency to the rule book which should go a long way in helping NASCAR's image after it was pulled through the mud when it came to penalties the past few years.
