84 races strapping in. 84 times another driver went to victory lane. Injuries. Drama. Car changes. Rule Changes. Legal battles. Lastly, numerous bold, no holds-bar, statements to remind us Tony was still with us. Anything you can imagine happening to break a man down happened to Tony Stewart in the last few years. Last Sunday it came full circle.

Smoke never gave up through all the frustration and personal issues that could have followed him. Even on Sunday at Sonoma he wasn't going to lay down after a mistake or two. Between his hard racing and say all attitude, its what has defined his career.

This week, with Smoke only trailing a Chase spot (top 30 spot) by 9 points, NASCAR heads to Daytona International Speedway. It's a place Tony has won at four times and its a race Tony has won four times. The reality is that Smoke never won a Daytona 500, but winning four Firecracker 400's is no small task. Of current drivers only Dale Earnhardt Jr has as many DIS wins as Stewart (4).

So, last week I begged the question at the end of my intro to Sonoma is a underdog like A.J. Allmendinger could win and steal a Chase spot. I also specifically asked if Smoke could get it done at Sonoma. He did, so now the next question is can he get to 50 wins and lock himself into the Chase by being top 30 in points with one more Firecracker 400?

**This section is just a quick look at some of Cup drivers latest finishes. This is not a tool for fantasy purposes and NBTW only is looking at end results. No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good

• Denny Hamlin- 2016 Daytona 500 winner will look to continue his Daytona dominance in the 2016 Firecracker. Hamlin has a streak of five straight top 10's that includes four top 5's at Daytona heading into this weekends race.
• Dale Earnhardt Jr- Even with his wreck in the Daytona 500, Junior still has the best average finish in the last 8 Daytona races (10). That's saying something about just how consistently good he has been here in the last few years.
• Jimmie Johnson- In the last eight races only Junior and JJ have multiple wins (both have two). JJ also has five top 5's in those last eight races.

The Middle

• Regan Smith- Yes, Regan Smith is stuck in the middle. No, I wouldn't trust he will have another quality finish, but his last three finishes have been 8th, 16th, and 8th. Before that he had finished of 34th, 24th, 24th, and 7th. 

The Bad

• Brad Keselowski- BK actually tends to find himself up front a ton at Daytona, but it never seems to unfold into more in the latest stops here. In 14 races he only has three top 10's. Don't be surprised to see him in the mix at some point but possible finish worse.
• Matt Kenseth- Speaking of a guy who can get in the mix at Daytona, Kenseth has two career Daytona wins, but his last seven runs here have had many mixed results. In those seven races he has one top 10 and only three top 20's.
• Paul Menard- Menard has seven straight finishes outside the top 15. Eight races ago was his last Daytona top 15 and it was 14th. The plus side is before that he had three top 10's.

Track Stats

• Jimmie Johnson was the first driver since Bobby Allison in 1982 to win both stops at DIS in a single season
• Tony Stewart won from 42nd starting position 7/7/12, which is the farthest back anyone has won from (Firecracker 400)
• However, Matt Kenseth won from 39th in the 2009 500, which is the farthest back anyone has won the Daytona 500
• Of current drivers, Jeff Gordon has the most wins at Daytona with 6 (3 of them the 500). Stewart is second with 4 (None the 500)
• A Toyota only has two wins at DIS (Kyle Busch 2008 Firecracker and Denny Hamlin 2016 Daytona 500)
• Chevy has won 8 of the last 14. Ford has won 5 of 13. Denny Hamlin won the other.
• Trevor Bayne is still the youngest Daytona 500 win (19 years old. 2011 Daytona 500). It is still his only Cup win.

Week 17: Firecracker 400

Sunday July 6th marked the return of NASCAR on NBC. It also marked the latest finish for a Cup race in 2015. After a lengthy rain delay cars finally got back on the track to get the race in on early Monday morning. Many people had to go to bed and missed the race, but those of us who could stay up got to see some decent racing.

For the most part, it was a Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr dominated morning. The Hendrick cars were once again strong all day and that proved true when Jr brought home the win. No disrespect to Jr, but the big headlines were the fans who stuck it out and the big wreck that had fans worried for Austin Dillon's safety.

Many people in the social media world were ranting and complaining over the race being held on Sunday and not Saturday. Now, I understand a Saturday night race gives you more options to run Sunday, but there was no way NASCAR wanted to compete with an American Holiday on the 4th. Plus, in a non football season, the thought of a Sunday Night Prime Time Race seemed to good of an opportunity to pass up. So, I do not blame NBC for giving it a try. When all is said and done, weather was the real issue.

As for Dillon, he was the focus of the final big one Monday morning during the closing lap. His car got flipped up into the catch fence and was ripped apart in a matter of milliseconds. Fortunately, Dillon and all the fans near escaped with mostly just scraps and bruises. It was a horrible incident, but it shows just how far NASCAR has come in terms of safety.

Remember, NASCAR (and racing in general) is a dangerous sport. We can (and should) continue to do all we can to improve safety, but at no point will the sport of racing ever be completely safe. Things happen and accidents like this are just part of life and the risks we take as drivers, fans, and humans. Let this be just another reminder in the world around you that any moment something could happen that you have no control over. Let those you love know and make sure to live life to the fullest. 

Now, onto a less serious note, the Power Rankings. Oh, and if you missed it check out some of the photos after the rankings.

1. Jimmie Johnson (LW-2)- JJ finished in the top 10 for both races at Daytona International Speedway this year. That is 5 top 5's in his last 6 races at Daytona including two wins, maybe others should be paying attention? Finish: 2nd
2. Kevin Harvick (LW-1)- That is two straight races where Harvick didn't lead a lap. He only has three races in 2015 that he did not lead a lap during and Daytona was two of them (Sonoma the other). Finish: 4th
3. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-4)- In his last 9 races Jr has yet to finish outside 14th, has 5 top 10's, 5 top 10's, and 2 wins. Yes, it is time to start the, "can Dale Jr win a Championship finally," hype. Finish: 1st
4. Kurt Busch (LW-3)- The top 4 drivers just keep remaining the same week after week. Right now, these guys are top of the class with a few nipping right below. Again, all four finished top 5 and all managed to stay out of trouble at Daytona. Finish: 5th
5. Jamie McMurray (LW-7)- Eh. That's kind of JMac's Firecracker 400 in a nutshell. He ran in the top 15 most of the race, but was never truly a threat to win and ended up finishing about where he ran. Finish: 15th
6. Kasey Kahne (LW-8)- Kahne gets to move up even after his wreck because he was one of the early contenders in the race. A Hendrick engine up front was a theme on the night, but Kahen got caught up and ruined his night. Finish: 32nd
7. Joey Logano (LW-5)- The second Daytona race of 2015 wasn't as kind to JoLo. He seemed to be kind of like a pinball during the race, but gutted it out for an ok finish. Finish: 22nd
8. Martin Truex Jr (LW-6)- Truex had a strong car go to waste when he got caught up in a wreck. The #78 team does have the win under there belt now, so this just takes a hit on the amount of car depth they have, and they wont worry about the points. Finish: 38th
9. Clint Bowyer (LW-10)- Anyone going to give Clint some credit for three straight top 10's? Oh, you didn't know he had three straight? Give him some love. They haven't been pretty, but he is still fighting to give himself a chance. Finish: 10th 
10. Ryan Newman (LW-NR)- After a rough patch, the consistent Newman has now posted back to back top 10's while only leading one lap in those two races. Finish: 8th
11. Matt Kenseth (LW-11)- The last two drivers on this list this week are hanging on by a thread. Really, they're just lucky no one else is getting hot at the moment. Kenseth flashed moment of having a top 5-10 car, but got caught up in a wreck. Finish: 23rd
12. Brad Keselowski (LW-9)- Meanwhile, BK had an ok car but never held track position. He seemed to find the middle of every wreck and he was left trying to find his way out. In the ned he didn't find his way out. Finish: 29th

Just Missed: Denny Hamlin

Honorable Mention: Austin Dillon (7th), Trevor Bayne (9th), Casey Mears (11th), David Ragan (12th), and Landon Cassill (13th)

2015 Week 17 Preview: Daytona

Last time NASCAR started a Daytona preview it was to kick off the 2015 season. Kevin Harvick was just coming off his first Sprint Cup Title. Jeff Gordon had a fantastic 2014 season and announced he would be done full time racing after the 2015 season, and everyone hated Brad Keselowski...

Well, Harvick is still hanging tough, Gordon could use some bounce back but will still retire from full time Cup racing, and I think many people are still not BK fans. Some things never change in the NASCAR world.

Last year after this race Aric Almirola was all smiles as a rain shortened race gave him his first career win and also locked him into the 2014 Sprint Cup Chase. This year we head into Daytona with the same feeling, can an underdog win and make his whole season in one 400 mile race?

The Good

• Dale Earnhardt Jr- Jr has the best average finish at Daytona of any active driver (13.1), which is pretty darn good considering how easy it is to get caught up in a wreck here. In his last 7 races here he has 5 top 10's which includes 4 top 5's and the 2014 Daytona 500 win. 
• Jimmie Johnson- Kind of similar to Jr, JJ has four top 10's in his last five races at Daytona. JJ's stats include two wins in that time and all of those four were top 5's. The only thing that has got in his way lately was a crash in last years Firecracker 400.
• Casey Mears- I have to give credit where credit is due, and lately Mears has been a top 10 finisher here at Daytona. Is it luck? Sure, but it is for anyone at superspeedways. But, it also take a lot of skill, timing, and awareness to keep a car clean and make your move. Mears has four straight top 10's that proves he can do that.

The Middle

• Clint Bowyer- Bowyer has been borderline "Good" lately here with 3 top 10's in the last 4 races, but over his career it has been a roller coaster. He seems to sit back some and let things happen in front of him before making a move and happens to get mixed results.

The Bad

• Kyle Larson- Can he catch a break at Daytona? This spot is ALL due to bad luck and being in the wrong spot at the wrong time, plus a short sample size. I think Larson can bounce back, but bad luck has him in the "Bad" company for now.
• Sam Hornish Jr- Zero top 10's in 8 tries for Hornish at Daytona. At this years 500 he did manage a 12th place finish after starting 38th, so there might be a bright side.
• AJ Allmendinger- Does AJ find trouble or does it find him at Daytona? The more Daytona starts he has the more I lean towards he finds it. I am a AJ fan, but his 12 starts with only 1 top 5 and 2 top 10's show he has some room to improve here.
