2015 Pit Road Week 30: Charlotte

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Bank of America 500

By Richard Tix

No race review or extra topics this week, just the Power Rankings. With it getting rained out Saturday I missed the whole race on Sunday. I caught up on Twitter and on Race View during the day, but I did not catch any of it on TV/Radio. Lets jump right into the rankings after Charlotte.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 30 (Week 29)
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-1)- No, Harvick was not the driver to lock himself into the next round with a win, but he still finished second and has been the best driver most of the season. Finish: 2nd
  2. Joey Logano (LW-3)- JoLo locked himself into the next round with a win at Charlotte, now maybe we can have a rerun of last season where he helps teammate BK into the next round. Finish: 1st
  3. Denny Hamlin (LW-6)- JGR and Denny's late season surge just may help him get to the final 4 again, this in a season long quest instead of just a good Chase like in 2014. Finish: 4th
  4. Carl Edwards (LW-8)- Speaking of JGR, Carl had a nice top 10 to start this round and put his 15th place Dover finish behind him. Finish: 6th
  5. Martin Truex Jr (LW-9)- Truex survived the first round and started off the second round hot. His top 5 at Charlotte will help his chances moving forward. Finish: 3rd
  6. Brad Keselowski (LW-7)- BK's finish saved what was a pretty rough day. Many Chase drivers finished in front of him, but a worse finish would be a tougher hole to get out of. Finish: 9th
  7. Kurt Busch (LW-12)- Kurt started last round just like this with a top 5, then it fell apart. Next race will be a big one for the #41 team. They need to find some consistency. Finish: 5th
  8. Jeff Gordon (LW-11)- Gordon's consistency so far in the Chase will help him advance to the next round, but he will need more to get to Miami. Right now though, its about surviving and advancing. Finish: 8th
  9. Kyle Busch (LW-4)- Not a good time for a bad finish, but if anyone outside of the top 8 can get back in it, it is a JGR driver. Finish: 20th
  10. Ryan Newman (LW-10)- Newman might not be able to do it again.. He will need to find some top 10's in the next races to even have a shot at the next round, let alone the Finale. Finish: 15th
  11. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-5)- It has not been a good Chase for Jr. He looked strong at and after Dover, but it did not carry into Charlotte. Finish: 28th
  12. Matt Kenseth (LW-2)- That is some bad luck for Kenseth. He was looking like a guy to contend with Harvick. As stated above for Kyle, if anyone can come back right now it is a JGR driver. But, he might just need a win to do it. Finish: 42nd

2015 Week 12 Pit Road: Charlotte

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Week 12: Coca-Cola 600

By Richard Tix

This weekend NASCAR stayed in Charlotte after the Sprint Cup All Star Race. This week, NASCAR Behind the Wall went camping and did not catch much of the race... What I did catch was a lot of race view and tweets with updates from sources at the track.

After missing much of this weeks race i will not get into much of a race review, but instead head directly to the power rankings for the week.

However, I would like to mention again the deal that ifantasyrace.com has for DraftKings and access to there site. It's a great deal, especially if you love fantasy sports! Check it out following this link.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 12 (Week 11)
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-2)- Lots of parity this season, but one constant remains....Kevin Harvick. The Coca-Cola 600 wasn't his best race of the season, but he still finished in the top 10 and lead a few laps (26). Finish: 9th
  2. Martin Truex Jr (LW-3)- Two top fives in his last four races and four straight top 10's for Truex. He is still second in points 12 races into the season and has 11 top 10's. Finish: 5th
  3. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-4)- Jr's last three finishes? 1st, 3rd, and 3rd. Many could make a case for him in the #1 or #2 spots. Sorry, Jr Nation. I held back a bit and only moved him to the third spot as he did not lead a lap in those last two 3rd place finishes. Finish: 3rd
  4. Jimmie Johnson (LW-1)- Sunday night was a rough one for Jimmie Johnson. JJ took a few turns and got loose a few times on his way to a bad finish. What is weird is how well he has run on the 1.5's this year and how good he has been at Charlotte in his career. Finish: 40th
  5. Kurt Busch (LW-5)- Now that Kurt got his win he doesn't have to worry too much about the Chase. But, he just keeps having quality runs. Again on Sunday he had a great car but managed to finish just inside the top 10, reminds me of Harvick's non Chase races in 2014. Finish: 10th
  6. Matt Kenseth (LW-8)- Other then some bad luck at Talladega Kenseth has really kept his hot "short track run" going since NASCAR left the small track swing. He now has back to back top 10's on 1.5 mile tracks. Maybe the 20 team has found something? Finish: 4th
  7. Ryan Newman (LW-9)- Newman has 10 finishes of 12th or better in 12 races so far, including 8 top 10's. This team just keeps putting together top finishes and it is showing with Newman sitting 11th in points even after his penalty. Finish: 6th
  8. Jeff Gordon (LW-6)- Gordon just didn't have the car to run up front on Sunday. Other then Deg, it was his first finish outside the top 10 since Las Vegas. Finish: 15th
  9. Brad Keselowski (LW-10)- After a few rough finishes from Bristol through Talladega, BK has jumped back with two 7th place finishes with very good cars. The past two races he could have easily finished top 5, but didn't close the deal. Finish: 7th
  10. Joey Logano (LW-7)- The cream of the crop is in the top 10, which is shown by JoLo all the way in 10th. But really, he has been a bit less of a factor as of late than he was to start the season. Finish: 13th
  11. Carl Edwards (LW-NR)- One win and Carl is back in the top 12? Well, the last two spots are wide open compared to the top 10. Guys like JMac, Almirola, Menard, and Hamlin are all in the talks, but Carl locking in a spot while NASCAR was at a 1.5 is big news for JGR. Finish: 2nd
  12. Kyle Busch (LW-NR)- Same thing goes for Rowdy as did Carl, one finish of 11th and he is in the top 12? Well, I really don't have too many great cases for the top 12 and a comeback after his injury seems like a good spot. Now, if he doesnt back it up he will drop out just as fast. Finish: 11th
Dropped Out: Jamie McMurray and Aric Almirola
Just Missed: A bunch of guys.

Well, this week no one added there name to the leader board list after Carl Edwards nailed the come out of no where win. This week we head to Dover to see if anyone can dethrone Jimmie Johnson at the Monster Mile.

Pit Road Week 31: Charlotte

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Week 31

By Richard Tix

Well, NASCAR has to be smiling this week. Yes, they have a mess to handle with a few drivers (cough, cough, Brad Keselowski), but you can not tell me that the excitement didn't bring some extra spotlight to the Chase? You know what they say, and publicity is good publicity. No matter who's side you are on (or who your favorite driver is) you can not deny the post race fireworks were exciting!

I've admitted before, I am a BK fan (I try and keep it unbiased on here, and if you think its biased feel free to call me out!), but he overreacted a bit on Saturday. I do believe him that there was more to the story than what ESPN showed, but it still seemed over the top. But hey, this new format is getting under drivers skin. BK entered the Chase as one of the fastest cars on the season, and some bad luck (tire issue at Kansas) and the poor finish Saturday has him on the outside looking in. So, before completely cursing him out, think of what you would do as a competitor that may have just lost his bid at a Championship in a season where it was him and a handful of others.

As I said, still an overreaction. Denny Hamlin also acted like he didn't play a part (which is smart by him because he knows more people hate BK then him). Yet, he brake checked BK before a lot of this happened. The best, is the quiet guy from Wisconsin who is always level headed charged at BK between the haulers! It made for some great TV. So, no matter who you hate and why, just think about how much spotlight that night, and this Chase format brought to the sport.

You maybe and old school guy and hated the Chase changes, but the sport needed something to get it going again. It couldn't keep struggling or it would eventually be a thing of the past. This could just be the thing the sport needed, an added spark plug.

The greatest thing about the after race activities? Nothing was scripted. Everything was real. Real anger, real frustration, real emotion. This is something the sport needs. We need a villain. We need emotion. We need to see when drivers are upset. Saturday night was on the brink of out of control, so don't get me wrong, it can't go to much farther or NASCAR would have a real problem on there hand. The one issue I did see (which was hilarious, yet still concerning) is when Smoke backed into BK. I thought the response by Smoke was funny, yet I couldn't help but think he really should have stayed composed at a time like this. He has been under a lot of fire lately and it just seemed to be the not smart thing to do.

So, just like Saturday night, everyone has forgotten to give Kevin Harvick his due. All season he has been fast, yet he hadn't had a win in 20 races. Can you believe that? It was 20 races in between wins, even though it seems like he should win every week. By now Harvick seems like he should have 10 wins. But, all that matters is he locked in a win into the next round and doesnt have to worry about Talladega. So he may only have 3 win's on the season, yet he got one of the most important ones (other then Miami when we get there).

So, Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick move on, lets take a look at the power rankings before Talladega.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 31 (Week 30)

  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-3)- I did mention after Kansas he should bounce back at Charlotte in the last rankings. I didn't know it was going to be in a huge win though. Harvick gets to sit back and enjoy Talladega this time around.
  2. Joey Logano (LW-1)- So far this Chase JoLo either finishes first or fourth. Not bad, right? He lost his top spot only because of how huge and pressure packed Harvick's win was. No shot at either of these two, they really are 1A and 1B.
  3. Kyle Busch (LW-2)- Check out Rowdy's last 6 races of the regular season and then this first 5 of the Chase. Boy, was he fooling us! Maybe JGR was truly saving something for the Chase, all I know is Kyle Busch has turned it around (and he was my preseason pick to win, so Im still alive).
  4. Jeff Gordon (LW-5)- Gordon finished second on Saturday but really got lost in the commotion of the after race activities. He also lead 74 laps on the night. He struggled on some restarts again, but he came up big on the last restart that helped him finish second.
  5. Carl Edwards (LW-4)- Carl was quiet all night. Then, you look at the finishing order and realize he finished 8th. That's how you move onto the next round. After struggling in round one (avg three race finish of 16) he has finishes of 5th and 8th this round.
  6. Ryan Newman (LW-7)- I have mentioned a few times in my blog that Newman could make some noise and advance for awhile with consistent finishes (which goes with my idea I first mentioned when the new Chase format came out, that consistency will still be huge in the Chase). Well, Newman has been proving that point, as he should move on to the final 8. But, it only gets harder the further along. Newman just keeps watching people drop by bad luck and mistakes.
  7. Denny Hamlin (LW-6)- DH didn't have a quiet night at Charlotte, but most of that was due to the post race antics. He did finish 9th which some may have not noticed in the action. He has put himself in good position to move on.
  8. Kasey Kahne (LW-12)- Kahne finished 10th on Saturday out of no where, but he is still 7th in points and needs to avoid the big one at Dega. If he does that, he should move on.
  9. Matt Kenseth (LW-8)- Kenseth is in the same boat at Kahne, stay away from the big one. Yet, he is one point out of 8th, so he will need to beat Kahne. Any decent finish should help Kenseth (the Wisconsin Ninja) move on. Maybe he can finally get a win in 2014? I still can't believe it hasn't happened yet.
  10. Brad Keselowski (LW-9)- Wow, was he making enemies on Saturday. He wasn't the only one in these incidents, as others were not angels in the situation, but he sure did overact a bit. I don't blame him one bit for trying to block Kenseth on a restart (Kenseth didn't have much room there anyways), but brushing him on the cool down doing 50 was too much. Hit him doing the slow down speed, not coming in like a bat outa hell. Either way you look at it, BK will need a quality finish and hope for some other drivers bad luck (or he needs to win).
  11. Jimmie Johnson (LW-10)- JJ and Jr both look like they need to win at Dega (or a few drivers have bad luck early). 26 point behind can be made up at a track like Dega, but it wont be with a whole lot of luck.
  12. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-11)- See JJ. ^ Jr's best chance (well everyone's best chance) is to win at Talladega. If he doesn't get the win he will need tons of luck on his side. Once a season favorite, Jr is on the outside looking in (26 back of 8th).
  13. Kyle Larson (LW-13)- Each week this spot dwindles, yet Larson keeps the spot remaining. After Dega the spots 9-12 will open up and Larson will most likely jump into one of those spots. His Chase run has been remarkable for a rookie.

I have to say, the racing was good at Charlotte and the action after was even more exciting. If for only one race, NASCAR got the drama it wanted with this new Chase format (and you cant script that). Now everyone's worst thoughts come true (except JoLo and Harvick). Everyone goes into Dega with a whole lot of uncertainty and a lot of stress.

Who was right on Twitter this week and predicted the correct winner of the Bank of America 500?

William who writes some Fantasy Football articles on TimersSports (unrelated blog, but good guys) was my lone correct pick (about 25 tweeted me this week).

However, I have a few extras to add. Found this hilarious since ESPN delayed the coverage of the start of the race. (This one came in first).

(This one came in right after the first). This one was actually the correct of the two! Baylor did win. And I am sure some of you want to forget about this part of your NASCAR evening, it did happen so I had to highlight these two tweets (which in the moment were pretty funny).

Thanks again for following and participating on Twitter! As always, thanks for checking out NASCAR Behind the Wall! Check back as all the Talladega information you need will be posted throughout the week.

Pit Road Week 12: Charlotte

Weekly Review and Power Rankings

Week 12

By Richard Tix

After 12 races (11 regular season races and 1 All-Star Race) Jimmie Johnson finally broke the curse. No, not his win less streak, but MY win less streak. It is the first time in 12 races that I predicted the race winner. Ok, ok, Jimmie Johnson also finally won a race in 2014, I guess that is news as well...

The review of the Coca-Cola 600 this week will be short. I tend to keep the reviews short when I didn't catch most of the race. This week I was in Southern, MN camping with family. This is typically a small family reunion at a camp ground (about 30-35 friends and family all together). Typically we make a run into town at a small local bar to catch some of the race. Sometimes when we get back we will catch a bit more at the camp ground (sometimes a family member will get a site with cable).

This year I did neither, but I did catch some of the action on Twitter from time to time. So, I am basing most of my rankings on media and teams twitter feeds and the full race results. Also included in the rankings will be consideration after looking at some race loop data which is always handy. (Full Coca-Cola 600 race results)

Pit Road: Power Rankings Week 12 (Week 11)
*Does not include the All-Star Race into the Rankings*
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-2)- Havick takes the top spot from Gordon, but this was a tough one. Gordon had a good 600, but Harvick once again had a great car and led 100 laps on Sunday. Kevin just didn't have enough to get to JJ in the end.
  2. Jeff Gordon (LW-1)- Jeff Gordon still holds NASCAR's points lead after 12 races and he and he put himself in the Chase after his Kansas win. Now all the 24 team needs to do is keep it locked in and they could make a Championship run.
  3. Matt Kenseth (LW-3)- Tough company at the top. Kenseth has a good night on Sunday as he led 33 laps and spent a lot of time up front. He actually ran the race on average in 5th position and spent 99.8% of the race in the top 15. He eventually came home in 3rd place and is still 2nd in points without a win.
  4. Kyle Busch (LW-5)- Kyle didn't have the greatest race, but he brought it home 9th. I feel like that is how a lot of the season has gone, not a great race but a pretty good finish. He has only had 7 races of the 12 that he has been in the top 15 for more than 55% of the time. Watch out if the 18 team does get it fully together though.
  5. Carl Edwards (LW-7)- Another average race for Carl, yet he finished 4th Sunday night. Can this team break out? Will this be his last year at Roush? All of these are questions Carl does not want to hear, but he better get used to it.
  6. Jimmie Johnson (LW-12)- 11 races into the 2014 season and Jimmie Johnson did not have a win. Well, he got his first and he has a great shot at picking up #2 this week at Dover. Watch out, JJ could be back in the top 5 very soon.
  7. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-4)- The 600 itself wasn't a terrible race for Jr as he spent most of the night in the top 10, but Dale Jr did finish the night 19th. After his bad finish at Dega, he had struggled (finish position) in the last 3 races.
  8. Joey Logano (LW-6)- JoLo spent most of the night in the top 15 and also ran the night on average around 8th, but the competition on top is heated and his 12th place finish dropped him a few spots. Not to worry, he and his Penske teammate have still been fast the last few races, they just have to finish.
  9. Brian Vickers (LW-11)- I did predict Vickers (and AJ Allmendinger) as my surprise drivers this season, but even past that this is a great story. Vickers finished the 600 6th and picked up his 5th top 10 of the season. The bigger story is he doesn't have very many bad runs on the season and is 8th in points.
  10. Kasey Kahne (LW-10)- Here is where the rankings get shaky. You could make a case for a lot of guys in the bottom spots. Kahne had a disappointing Charlotte run after finishing 14th, but his previous two finishes were 3rd and 8th.
  11. Paul Menard (LW-NR)- Menards finished in the top 10 (8th) at Charlotte after not spending much time up front all night (34% of the race in the top 15, average running position of 18th). Even though it wasn't a great race it was still a good finish and his 2nd top 10 in the last 3 races.
  12. Brad Keselowski (LW-NR)- After a good start BK has cooled off as of late. He and the #2 team has started piecing it back together in the last 4 races though (Dega he was taken out early and finished 38th). His other 3 finishes in the last 4 are 10th, 13th, and 4th.

Dropped Out: Greg Biffle and Kyle Larson
Just Missed: Ryan Newman and Aric Almirola
Honorable Mention: Jamie McMurray

Week 12 brought us a new winner in 2014 (Jimmie Johnson) but as week head to Dover there are still some big names out there win less. Clint Bowyer is still riding a 53 race win less streak that dates back to the Charlotte Chase race in 2012. Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, and Ryan Newman are all looking for a win in 2014 as well. But will it be Jimmie Johnson's race to lose at Dover?

I finally predicted a race winner in 2014 after a few close calls and a few terrible underdog picks, but I wasn't alone. Matt Aleza (@MattAleza1 and of ThisSportz) also let me know before the race on Twitter that Jimmie Johnson was going to win.

Onto race 13 of the 2014 season. I have a pretty busy week this week after a long weekend, but I will have the preview up tomorrow and at least one extra Dover article this week.
