84 races strapping in. 84 times another driver went to victory lane. Injuries. Drama. Car changes. Rule Changes. Legal battles. Lastly, numerous bold, no holds-bar, statements to remind us Tony was still with us. Anything you can imagine happening to break a man down happened to Tony Stewart in the last few years. Last Sunday it came full circle.

Smoke never gave up through all the frustration and personal issues that could have followed him. Even on Sunday at Sonoma he wasn't going to lay down after a mistake or two. Between his hard racing and say all attitude, its what has defined his career.

This week, with Smoke only trailing a Chase spot (top 30 spot) by 9 points, NASCAR heads to Daytona International Speedway. It's a place Tony has won at four times and its a race Tony has won four times. The reality is that Smoke never won a Daytona 500, but winning four Firecracker 400's is no small task. Of current drivers only Dale Earnhardt Jr has as many DIS wins as Stewart (4).

So, last week I begged the question at the end of my intro to Sonoma is a underdog like A.J. Allmendinger could win and steal a Chase spot. I also specifically asked if Smoke could get it done at Sonoma. He did, so now the next question is can he get to 50 wins and lock himself into the Chase by being top 30 in points with one more Firecracker 400?

No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good

• Denny Hamlin- 2016 Daytona 500 winner will look to continue his Daytona dominance in the 2016 Firecracker. Hamlin has a streak of five straight top 10's that includes four top 5's at Daytona heading into this weekends race.
• Dale Earnhardt Jr- Even with his wreck in the Daytona 500, Junior still has the best average finish in the last 8 Daytona races (10). That's saying something about just how consistently good he has been here in the last few years.
• Jimmie Johnson- In the last eight races only Junior and JJ have multiple wins (both have two). JJ also has five top 5's in those last eight races.

The Middle

• Regan Smith- Yes, Regan Smith is stuck in the middle. No, I wouldn't trust he will have another quality finish, but his last three finishes have been 8th, 16th, and 8th. Before that he had finished of 34th, 24th, 24th, and 7th. 

The Bad

• Brad Keselowski- BK actually tends to find himself up front a ton at Daytona, but it never seems to unfold into more in the latest stops here. In 14 races he only has three top 10's. Don't be surprised to see him in the mix at some point but possible finish worse.
• Matt Kenseth- Speaking of a guy who can get in the mix at Daytona, Kenseth has two career Daytona wins, but his last seven runs here have had many mixed results. In those seven races he has one top 10 and only three top 20's.
• Paul Menard- Menard has seven straight finishes outside the top 15. Eight races ago was his last Daytona top 15 and it was 14th. The plus side is before that he had three top 10's.

Track Stats

• Jimmie Johnson was the first driver since Bobby Allison in 1982 to win both stops at DIS in a single season
• Tony Stewart won from 42nd starting position 7/7/12, which is the farthest back anyone has won from (Firecracker 400)
• However, Matt Kenseth won from 39th in the 2009 500, which is the farthest back anyone has won the Daytona 500
• Of current drivers, Jeff Gordon has the most wins at Daytona with 6 (3 of them the 500). Stewart is second with 4 (None the 500)
• A Toyota only has two wins at DIS (Kyle Busch 2008 Firecracker and Denny Hamlin 2016 Daytona 500)
• Chevy has won 8 of the last 14. Ford has won 5 of 13. Denny Hamlin won the other.
• Trevor Bayne is still the youngest Daytona 500 win (19 years old. 2011 Daytona 500). It is still his only Cup win.

Eighty Four races. For a driver who had won 48 career NASCAR Cup races in his career, eighty four races without a win must have felt like a lifetime. From the fan's perspective it felt like it was ages ago that we got to witness an upbeat Tony Stewart in Victory Lane, so it must have felt even better to be Smoke on Sunday.

After multiple injuries, personal turmoil, and social beating and battering, Smoke finally rose for at least a moment at Sonoma Raceway.

Stewart made an early pit during the last set of stops because he was losing ground on a long run. Just when it looked like he was down and out because of the pit strategy luck turned around when Michael McDowell's car stalled out and NASCAR threw a caution. 

The yellow left Stewart with pretty fresh tires and the lead with 14 to go, which was a spot Smoke hadn't been in in quite some time.

To most NASCAR fans it was a sight to see. Even non Stewart fans started to focus in on what could be his winless streak coming to an end and some even turned into his cheer section. Stewart spent the next 14 laps battling off Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin, and what seemed to be all of Toyota.

After running nearly perfect and depending all the key passing spots on Sonoma, Stewart finally gave Hamlin an inch when he wheel hopped turn 7 with two laps to go. Fortunately for Stewart Hamlin couldn't take full advantage and still trailed him.

When it happened again on the final lap Stewart eventually gave the lead up to Hamlin and hope seemed to start to disappear. Everyone knew Stewart would do anything it took, but with Hamlin in defense mode would it be enough?

Turn 11 came and went in a matter of seconds, but the turn and that moment will forever stick in NASCAR fan's minds. Denny Hamlin missed his mark, came in too hard and missed the inside line leaving the door wide open for Smoke to get his nose into the corner and into Hamlin's side.

From there it was classic Tony Stewart not giving an inch and taking the win while beating Hamlin's door around the corner.

Win number 49 was well worth the wait, though I'm sure if you ask Smoke he would rather have had 10 wins in that time. Stewart added his name to the list of 2016 winners and now only has to make up nine, yes only nine, points to take over 30th place in the standings.

In his last season fans may get their wish and see Tony Stewart in the 2016 Chase. Toyota Save Mart 350 Race Results.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 16 (Week 15)

1. Kevin Harvick (LW-1)- Not a huge threat on the day, Harvick was still up front consistently with an average running position of 10th. Finish: 6th
2. Kurt Busch (LW-2)- Ten straight top 10's, when will Kurt get a bit more credit for how consistent he is this season? He ran inside the top 10 most of the day at Sonoma. Finish: 10th
3. Joey Logano (LW-4)- Other than Tony Stewart, JoLo was the only ones to cut into Toyota's big day at the front. Late in the race Joey made some charging moves, but only enough to stick in the top 5. Finish: 3rd
4. Carl Edwards (LW-7)- Carl started on the Pole and had what looked like a winning car early and often (leading 24 laps). In the end he couldn't get past Hamlin and Truex to really contend (though he did finally pass Truex). Finish: 4th
5. Chase Elliott (LW-3)- The rookie gets a pass for Sonoma. It's no easy task coming to Sonoma as a rookie, but Chase kept it clean all day. Plus, he had six straight top tens coming into Sundays road course. Finish: 21st
6. Martin Truex Jr (LW-9)- Truex is a past Sonoma winner and he showed it Sunday. Before Hamlin charged at Stewart it was Martin trying to make his move. Finish: 5th
7. Brad Keselowski (LW-5)- Quiet day for BK. In fact, considering it was Sonoma he didn't run very well for most of the race. Finish: 15th 
8. Kyle Larson (LW-8)- Larson ran a ton of the race up front until he had trouble on pit road late. He still bounced back for a nice finish and continues his strong mid season surge. Finish: 12th
9. Matt Kenseth (LW-6)- Sonoma is one to forget for Kenseth, but when isn't it? In his career Sonoma has been a tough place for Kenseth to gain control of. Finish: 20th
10. Kyle Busch (LW-12)- Sunday at Sonoma was finally a step in the right direction for Rowdy. After a string of bad luck Kyle finally had a good race start to finish. Even though it wasn't enough it could be the start of another hot streak. Finish: 7th
11. Jimmie Johnson (LW-10)- Not a ton to say about JJ's day at Sonoma. Overall it was an average day with an average finish with JJ just being average. Look for a bounce back at Daytona. Finish: 13th
12. Tony Stewart (LW-NR)- Poor Newman, he drops out after finishing 8th, but this isn't about Newman. I couldn't let this spot pass by without having Smoke be apart of the rankings again. It wasn't just for the win, but it is also back to back top 10's (7th at Michigan). Finish: 1st

2016 NASCAR Week 16 Preview: Sonoma

NASCAR gets a week off this season for fathers day so all the drivers can enjoy some time away from the track (some will and some won't). No matter what the 40 drivers do, they won't be running in a Sprint Cup points race until we get to Sonoma Raceway.

Sonoma will provide the first chance for a driver to shake up the Chase outlook. Sure, any given week any driver can win a race, but most weeks that driver will come from a top 16 driver anyways. But, tracks like Sonoma and Watkin's Glen, plus superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega, give underdogs a real shot. Two years ago it was A.J. Allmendinger at WG and this year it could be anyone.

Maybe Tony Stewart can use his great MIS finish to gain speed towards the Chase with a Sonoma win? He has won here and road courses are the great equalizer.

However, in recent years the "ringer" drivers have been left in the dust and Cup regulars have started to focus more on these two tracks especially given the Chase circumstances.

So, will someone make a bid to splash the Chase party with a trip to victory lane at Sonoma? Or will business go on as usual?

The Good

• Kurt Busch- In Kurt Busch's last five races at Sonoma he has been a front runner. He has a win and four top 5's in that time. Coming into Sonoma during a 2016 where he has been one of the most consistent drivers means he should factor into Sundays race.
• Clint Bowyer- It will be a one year stint for Bowyer with HScott, but he has a shot to have one of his better runs of the year at Sonoma. Clint has a win, four top 5's, and five top 10's in the last five races.
• Carl Edwards- The 2014 Sonoma winner, Carl got caught up in a wreck last year and finished 40th. He should bounce back this year and brings back to back quality runs at Michigan and Pocono to Sonoma. 

The Middle

• Kasey Kahne- Kasey Kahne actually has three straight top 10's at Sonoma coming into week 16. Over his last five races he has an average finish of 10.8.

The Bad

• Denny Hamlin- Hamlins last five races at Sonoma Raceway havent yielded pretty results. IN fact, in that time he hasn't finished in the top 15 once. To top that off he only has one top 20 in the last five races.
• Ricky Stenhouse Jr- As I said last year in this preview, Ricky has a small sample size at Sonoma to really judge. He led those comments up with a 20th place finish. On the outside that looks like a poor result, but it was actually his best finish in three attempts.
• Matt Kenseth- Another JGR driver who has struggled at Sonoma lately, Kenseth and Hamlin look to get things turned around this year. He only has two top 15's in his last five Sonoma races.

• 9 current drivers have a win at Sonoma. However, only two have multiple wins (Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart).
• 18 total drivers have won a Cup race at Sonoma. Only six have multiple wins (Gordon, Stewart, Busch, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, and Ernie Ervan).
• Of those six, only one has more than 2 wins (Jeff Gordon- 5)
• Gordon also has the most top 5's (14) and top 10's (18) in a career
• Gordon has the most career poles (5) and Ricky Rudd the second most (4)
• Gordon has the best career average finish (8.3) followed by Dale Earnhardt (8.6)
• Rusty Wallace had an average start position of 6.9 over 17 career starts
• A Chevy has only won once (2010- Johnson) in the last 9 races. Dodge has won three times since then and has been out of the sport since after 2012. 
• Before that, Chevy had won 7 of 9 races.
• Sonoma has been won by the Pole 5 times in 27 Cup races
• The last Pole win was 2004- Jeff Gordon (11 races ago)

The future might be bright. The young guns of NASCAR were on full display this week at Michigan International Speedway. Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, and Austin Dillon are all under the age of 27 and all had great runs at MIS. In fact, many of these guys have been putting on a show for a few weeks now and could be the stars of tomorrow.

Add in some guys like Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Busch who are all mid 30's and younger and you can see we will have plenty of guys to follow during the next wave. Tha'ts not including the huge handfuls of young talent in the Xfinity and Truck series. 

JoLo, Chase, and Larson were once again the center of attention at Michigan as they made moves up in the front of the pack. In the end Joey thoroughly dominated the pack, but the display of talent was impressive none the less. 

The latest aero package also wasn't a disappointment. It was another step in the right direction as NASCAR takes away downforce, but it isn't the end or the solution just yet. We will always see changes because engineers in 2016 are just too good not to keep changing. I think this package would translate much better to other 1.5 mile tracks because the two mile MIS is a beast of it's own. Its pure speed with wide lanes which makes it difficult to consistently get the high entertainment needed to keep people with short attention spans happy in 2016.

However, even with a driver dominating most of the race (guys, this has always and will always happen in racing from time to time) I really did enjoy Michigan and the package.

We now head into a bye week. NASCAR, owners, drivers, and teams will get some much needed rest until we get back at it. Take a peek below who will hold the top spot heading into the bye week.

Pit Road Power Rankings Week 15 (Week 14)

1. Kevin Harvick (LW-2)- Let's be honest here, after Michigan we do not have a clear cut No. 1 driver. It was a weird race that looked like a bunch of teams were on the move up or down and then their was Harvick who was as consistent as ever. Oh, and Bloomin Monday! Finish: 5th
2. Kurt Busch (LW-1)- Kurt was moving all race. Top to bottom, he was out there making moves trying to find the front. Unfortunately he never got clean air to see what he had for JoLo. Finish: 10th
3. Chase Elliott (LW-4)- Man, I've said it before and Ill say it again, Chase is too tough on himself. It is nice to see a guy not throwing anyone or anything else under the bus, but sometimes its ok to just let it roll off and learn from it. MIS was again an impressive run for a guy in his first year. Finish: 2nd
4. Joey Logano (LW-7)- After starting on the pole Joey was hands down the best car on the day. He lead 138 laps on the way to one of the best burn outs in NASCAR right now. Finish: 1st
5. Brad Keselowski (LW-3)- Great car, some poor restarts. BK almost had JoLo on a mid race restart but while trying to not actually wreck the 22 he got loose and went falling back. Finish: 4th
6. Matt Kenseth (LW-5)- Not a notable day for Kenseth. In fact he was out of the spotlight at MIS most of the day. Still finish in the top 15 but it is a race to leave in the mirror. Finish: 14th
7. Carl Edwards (LW-9)- Carl ended up having the best finish in the JGR camp, but none of them were that great on Sunday. That's a weird thing in 2016. Finish: 6th
8. Kyle Larson (LW-12)- Man, another week that included a fun battle with Larson involved. Its starting to become a trend and I am really enjoying it. This time it came with a great finish too. Finish: 3rd
9. Martin Truex Jr (LW-6)- Out of the top drivers of 2016, Truex looked to struggle the most with the new package. It could have just been coincidence with a bad race, but he was loose all day. However, he still saved a decent finish in an otherwise non notable day. Finish: 12th
10. Jimmie Johnson (LW-10)- Speaking of struggling. JJ had a rough day capped off with getting run into by a loose Trevor Bayne. Finish: 16th
11. Ryan Newman (LW-NR)- Don't look now but Newman is still throwing up consistent finishes. He used to real off a win every year or two, but those days seem further in between, but he is still getting it done and giving himself a chance. Finish: 11th
12. Kyle Busch (LW-8)- Tough luck. That's really all I have for Rowdy nation this week. Not much you can say, this team is just in a funk but they have been fast every single week so it seems like they will snap out of it soon. Finish: 40th

2016 NASCAR Week 15 Preview: Michigan

This week NASCAR heads to one of the fastest tracks on the schedule. Last time NASCAR stopped at MIS they tried the "high drag" package and it lived up to its name, it was a major drag. The disappointing race (as well as how well Darlington went) was most likely a main reason NASCAR went with the lower downforce package.

So, finally MIS gets it's justice with the lower downforce package, will it pay dividends?

No deep statistic's are involved, but rather it is just a quick way to get ready for the race and get caught up on who has finished well at each track**

The Good

• Matt Kenseth- Kenseth is a three time winner, won here the last time we were at MIS, and has back to back top 5's in Michigan. He hasn't had the longest stretch of dominating performances, but last time around he ran so well here it looks like it might continue.
• Joey Logano- Six straight top 10's. That's how well JoLo has done here lately. Joey is the new Roush at MIS (RFR used to dominate MIS). JoLo adds in a win and three top 5's during that same stretch.
• Kevin Harvick- One of the most interesting/crazy stats you will read today: In Harvick's last six races at MIS he has five, five runner up finishes. Seriously, five 2nd place finishes in six races? That's remarkable. Even crazier is he only lead laps in two of those five races he finished second. Maybe this time he gets a win?

The Middle

• Ryan Newman- in 29 MIS starts Newman has 12 finishes between 10th and 20th. Not much more says "stuck in the middle" as that stat does. In his last eight races here he finished between 11th and 18th six times. The other two finishes were 8th. Bad? Not really. Good? Not really. Ok then, right in the middle.

The Bad

• Kyle Busch- Kyle's last MIS top 10 was the first stop at Michigan in 2013. That was six races ago. His first, last, and only win at MIS was nine races ago and since it has all been bad news. He has only one top 10 and three top 15's in that time.
• Aric Almirola- Aric has eight career starts at MIS and has yet to notch a top 10 and only has one top 15. The top 15 rate really should be higher for Aric, but he isn't downright terrible here.
• Kurt Busch- Three career wins at MIS. Three and he makes this list.. He also has 12 finishes of 30th or higher and 15 of 20th or higher in 30 career races. He could win the race or he could finish 28th, its a huge roll of the dice.

• Cale Yarborough won the first race at MIS in 1969 and also two of the first three.
• The furthest back a driver has started a race from and won was 32nd in 2009 by Mark Martin.
• A MIS race has been won 19 times from the Pole position including the last race in 2015 at MIS by Matt Kenseth
• Most cautions was 10 in 2006 and the race was won by Matt Kenseth. This is also the only MIS race that had double digit cautions in 89 races.
• David Pearson has the most career MIS wins with 9. Cale Yarborough follows with 8
• Cale Yarborough has the most top 5 finishes with 21 followed by Richard Petty and Jeff Gordon (19).
• Mark Martin has the most career top 10's with 31, followed by Bill Elliott with 29.
