2015 March Madness NASCAR Style: Final Four

NASCAR Behind the Wall Final Four

So the craziness of Martinsville Speedway is now past the March Madness bracket and four drivers have fought through to make it to the Final Four. These drivers will get a week off to get ready for the race that could send them to the Championship at Bristol. That race is the Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway that will be held Saturday night, April 11th. This will be the drivers last shot at making the Championship. NASCAR Behind the Wall is left with only one #1 seed, but still has a few strong drivers left. Check out the bracket and Final Four match-ups below.


Rules and Bracket Breakdown

  • Brackets were decided by current standings after the race at Las Vegas. Four Divisions, top 4 in the standings got the #1 seeds, 5-8 in the standings got the #2 seeds, 9-12 #3 seeds and so on.
  • From the standings the rankings were given out serpentine style. Meaning: The driver ranked 5th (first #2 seed) started in the lowest #1 seed's bracket. That continues until the three seeds where it then goes from top back down.
  • Here is how the rounds break down by race (first race we have two eliminations to speed it up).
    • Phoenix: Round 32 
    • Auto Club: Sweet 16
    • Martinsville: Elite 8
    • Texas: Final Four
    • Bristol: Championship
  • The driver that finishes Highest in the race moves on, no bonus points included (Think the last Chase Race)

So after Martinsville we are down to just four drivers. Regan Smith filled in for Kyle Larson so we adjusted used the #42 car in the match-up with Newman. Fortunately for Larson, Regan Smith did a fine job filling in while Newman struggled. It should make a great match-up at Texas between him and Brad Keselowski. Jimmie Johnson struggled all day so it left the door open for the Cinderella of this year, Aric Almirola.


Final Four Match-Ups

5) Brad Keselowski v 6 Kyle Larson
  • Larson- This one could get interesting. Last week Kyle Larson fainted at an autograph session which prompted him to go to the hospital. Like normal, if any driver ever steps out during the March Madness Tourney we just treat it as whoever drives the car that weekend. Regan Smith filled in and kept Larson going in 2015. All sign's lead to Larson back in the #42 after a week break for Easter. Larson only has three career starts at Texas but these kinds of tracks seem to suit him well. After his first finish of 23rd, he has finished 5th and 7th in his last two respectively. He might just pull of a bid to the Championship.
  • Keselowski- Kyle may have two straight top 10 finishes, but he still is up against Brad Keselowski. BK's early career here wasn't the best, so it brings down his average finish, but if you take a look at his last five starts at Texas you will see a different story. In his last five BK has finishes of 2, 9, 6, 15, and 3 (2 top 5's and 4 top 10's). Starting during his title year in 2012, BK has run well here but has yet to pull of a win.

1) Joey Logano v 4) Aric Almirola
  • Logano- This one seems like an obvious advantage to JoLo, after all he won this race just one year ago. Still, bad luck can happen at anytime which is partially how Aric got here, so could it happen to Joey? JoLo has five straight top 15 finishes here including 1 win and 3 top 5's. 
  • Almirola- To advance to the Final at Bristol it will take a quality race by "Double A." Aric doesn't have a ton of tracks with top 10 streaks like a guy of JoLo's calaber, but he hasn't had a lot of crippling finishes here. He has finished in the top 25 6 of 8 starts and has 3 top 15's. If he can safely bring it home maybe JoLo will run into some bad luck?

Week 6 STP 500

NASCAR headed to Martinsville this week and put the West Coast swing in the past. NASCAR also started to gear up for some short track racing and the first step on that path was the "paper clip." After mostly 1.5 mile tracks to start the year it was a great breather to get NASCAR back on track.

I could go on and on about my opinion about short tracks in NASCAR and how we should have more of them, but I will save that for the bye week "hot laps" article.

Joey Logano started the race on the pole and lead a ton early on while looking like the one to beat. But, we have seen that race to race with Joey and eventually like normal it rubbed off and he faded a bit. He did hang on loner than normal at Martinsville, however. The beginning of the race was mashed together with yellow flags for many different reasons (spins and debris). 

After a caution for Kennedy a few drivers stayed out and Martin Truex Jr took the lead over. Danica Patrick and Landon Cassill also stayed out and on the restart helped slow down the pack while Truex pulled away.

Eventually the fast pack got around those two and hunted down Truex. Truex gave way to Joey Logano once again and a few laps later Kevin Harvick took the lead from JoLo for the first time on Sunday. Denny Hamlin eventually took the lead on the same green flag run and then another caution came out for Ricky Stenhouse Jr (which seemed to be a trend Sunday). 

Denny Hamlin struggled on pit road and his pit selection most of the day. It looked like the pit selection might be his downfall on the day. The big issue on this pit stop was that he once again had a loose tire penalty and it put him in the back with arguably the strongest car on the track. 

Through the middle of the race Harvick, Kurt Busch, and Kasey Kahne all held the lead for a bit of time. We finally started to settle in and get a few green flag runs in, but eventually they gave way to more cautions. 

Lap 302 Brad Keselowski took the lead from Harvick meanwhile JGR holds the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place spots. Joe Gibbs Racing showed strong all day and really showed something for JoLo and SHR. On lap 316 BK and DH caught lapped traffic and DH got the low side for the lead. 

DH held the lead until they caught up to a lapped Ryan Newman who eventually held up DH, and DH gave way back to Kevin Harvick. At this point every NASCAR fan started thinking will anyone stop Harvick and can this keep going all year?

A few cautions in the middle, but DH finally caught Harvick on lap 399 when he put the bump and run on him for the pass. 

After a long day of up and down's Jeff Gordon finally had his day in the spotlight when he got the lead on lap 442. He held the lead for a bit but with 41 laps to go a debris caution was thrown and Jeff Gordon was caught speeding during his pit stop. 

With 19 Denny Hamlin lead Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. BK followed for laps and just didn't have enough to get around DH. In the closing laps BK tried to set up DH but on turn four of the lasp lap DH didn't bite and covered the inside. BK could have taken him out but only gave him a tap and DH went on to hold for the win.

It was Hamlins first win of 2015 and pretty much locked him into the Chase. The 11 had the strongest car on the day that we got to see and it paid off with a win. Following his win was a pretty epic burnout that I am sure you can find on youtube, it is worth the time.


Pit Road Power Rankings Week 6 (Week 5)
  1. Kevin Harvick (LW-1)- Harvick still spent a good portion of the day up front even though he didn't finish his usual second or better. Yes, he is human but leading 154 laps and finishing 8th isnt anything to be too upset about, especially when you have two wins. Finish: 8th
  2. Brad Keselowski (LW-3)- Quite for much of the day, Brad and Paul Wolfe got the #2 in a spot late in the race to contend. They said it before the race and after, Martinsville is a Chase race and they needed to improve here. Finish: 2nd
  3. Martin Truex Jr (LW-4)- Another top ten? Check. Thats all 6 races so far this year. This team looks like it is ready to get a win in 2015, but when? Even without a win, if they keep this up they may make the Chase om points. Finish: 6th
  4. Joey Logano (LW-6)- Week after week Joey runs up front at some point (almost always early). Joey could be one of Harvicks biggest threats if they figure out some mid race adjustments to put him in a good spot in the end more often like Sunday. Finish: 3rd
  5. Kurt Busch (LW-2)- Kurt spent some time up front again and it looked like maybe it would be another SHR day. This ended up not being the case but he fought through it and still had an alright finish. Finish: 14th
  6. Matt Kenseth (LW-10)- Kenseth was strong on Sunday (many JGR were). He looked like he had a car to win, but came up just short on the day. It was promising to see him run well here, as it used to be a track he hated, now he loves. Finish: 4th
  7. Jeff Gordon (LW-12)- It was not a fun day for Gordon and his fans, he was up and down all day. He finally got out front late and it looked like he might just win the thing, that was until a caution and a speeding penalty. Finish: 9th
  8. Denny Hamlin (LW-NR)- Denny Hamlin dominated much of the day but the stats wont show it. He lead, had to fight through the field, and lead again. Eventually he held of a charging BK for the win and gave us a fantastic burn out. Finish: 1st
  9. Dale Earnhardt Jr (LW-5)- Hendrick Motorsports had a pretty rough day and Jr was at the forefront. His shifter broke (how many times will this happen?) and he was stuck in a bad spot that lead to a wreck. Finish: 36th
  10. Kasey Kahne (LW-11)- Kahne is running better, thats no doubt, but he still seems to be searching for a bit more. It wasn't a great day, but he brought it home in a decent spot just outside the top 10. Finish: 11th
  11. Ryan Newman (LW-7)- He gets a break and stays in the top 12, but what the heck happened? He was so strong to start the race and that #31 just fell off. Finish: 27th
  12. Jimmie Johnson (LW-8)- Man, everything that could have gone wrong for JJ and the #48 team seemed to have happened. So many issues that it would be tough to list here. It's early so I still expect this team to turn it around. Finish: 35th

Great Run Honorable Mention: Danica Patrick, Casey Mears, and Regan Smith

Martinsville Finishes

With Martinsville weekend here and some rain stopping us from seeing cars on the track, NASCAR Behind the Wall thought it would be a great idea to take a look back at some finishes of past here at Martinsville Speedway.


2014 Fall Chase Race: 2014 Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500


Winner: Dale Earnhardt Jr

  • Unfortunatley for Dale and Jr Nation, he was already eliminated from the 2014 Chase. This win would have locked him into the final race at Homestead. As we all know, Kevin Harvick would still be the 2014 Champion, but at this moment in time it was a bitter sweet win.


2014 STP 500


Winner: Kurt Busch

  • Jimmie Johnson dominated on the day leading 296 laps, but in the end couldn't win his 9th Grandfather Clock. Kurt Busch actually caught and passed JJ even after his early tangle with Brad keselowski. It was Kurt's first and only win with SHR in 2014.

2013 Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500


Winner: Jeff Gordon
  • Jeff Gordon beats out Matt Kenseth (202) and Jimmie Johnson (123) by leading 78 laps and the most important one, the last one. This is Gordon's last Martinsville win and was number eight in his career.

2013 STP Gas Booster 500


Winner: Jimmie Johnson
  • The Spring Race At Martinsville in 2013 was actually the last time Jimmie Johnson won here, yet it doesn't seem like three races have been run since then. JJ dominated on the day after leading 346 laps he held off for the win. 

2012 Goody's Fast Relief 500

Winner: Ryan Newman
  • This was a fun finish that somehow Ryan Newman pulled off. Newman actually only lead 12 laps that day, while Jeff Gordon lead 329 and finished 14th. 

2010 Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500

Winner: Denny Hamlin
  • This is what Martinsville is all about, actually, this is what short track racing is all about. Denny Hamlin actually won both races in 2010, but this finish was an instant classic and never gets old.

2015 NASCAR Behind the Wall Hot Laps: Week 6

Cautions and the Evil of Social Media

Hot Laps will be a weekly article on news in the world of NASCAR. I will write these articles any weeks where I have a thought or opinion on NASCAR news that is worth sharing. So, this could be an every week thing, or just every few weeks. Its an opinion piece, so it is open to discussion and debate and would love to here your thoughts.


Social Media's Monster in the Corner of the Room


I touched base a bit on this topic in my Pit Road Week 5 Article, but thought it was bigger then just a race review article. We are now in the day of technology, for better or worse. Lately I have seen the worst side come out and it happens all too much.

Sports stars and Celebrities have come to grips with the fact that social media and social media attention is now a part of there lives if they so sign up for it. They know what comes with the territory and normally they take it in stride.

However, there are two sides to social media and interaction. Many "fans" forget that even though they now have free rain to try and contact a driver at any moment over a social media platform that the they're still human. Within the technology and the screen sitting in front of these "fans" they lose sense of being a good person and individual.

Name calling starts coming which leads to even more vulgar statements. Pictures and memes start to circle around like a note in Kindergarten making fun of the kid with glasses. Sometimes it even goes as far as other family members or significant others getting pulled into the classless name calling.

All because people can sit behind a screen and never be seen? They can act like the tough guy because nothing will come of it? They can steal some attention because not only might that driver see it but they can maybe stir up the fan base as well. It really comes down to a sad reality that some people can stoop so low as to immature name calling and vulgarize statements. The worst thing might be is many of these "fans" teach there own children not to do this stuff to fellow friends or classmates, yet sit on there personal device to attach a driver they don't even know other then what they openly share with us.

You can have your opinion on a driver or NASCAR personality, you can dislike them, hate them, bring up reason's you think they're not good at there job, all of those are opinions. But what is with the second grade level name calling? Memes? You are degrading yourself even if these people on social media never meet you. Have a little pride in how you hold yourself accountable in day to day interactions with people you have physical and personal relationships with or those in the cyber world, because in the end we are all people.


To Debris or not Debris?


After the Auto Club 400 the Debris issue came to NASCAR's forefront. It has always been there, but now its a hot topic again. That's because on Sunday NASCAR threw a handful of debris cautions and fans got upset because of NASCAR's lack of clarity.

It also heated up because they came late in the race and may have altered the finish.

So, when does NASCAR throw a debris caution and when will they not? Everyone blames NASCAR when they do not see a shot of the debris on the track. Most of the time the anger comes more from the fans of drivers effected. So, it varies every time how upset a fan gets.

Just like NASCAR and throwing the yellow. Every debris caution is different as well as every late race spin or wreck. I think if fans were in NASCAR's shoes they would have just as hard of a time pulling or not pulling the trigger on ANY late race caution.

In the end, its a judgement call by officials that is made in a matter of seconds when they actually pull the trigger. It is not just a NASCAR thing either. Every Sport comes down to judgement at some point by an officiating crew even when that sport uses instant replay. At some point some finish will come down to judgement and going by the book. Sometimes even the book is hard to read which lead to fans saying there is no clarity or consistency. Just see the SMU game in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, fan judgement v officials judgement v rules.

So, in my opinion sometimes you have to roll with it. Now, I am one that still will argue when i think a call is wrong, but after awhile I have to move on because it isn't worth fighting something that came down to human judgement. So, have at it when discussing the ruling on Sunday, but don't blame NASCAR for every problem every time something happens, sometimes you can do nothing about human judgement except roll with it.

Side Note on the Last Caution (due to Biffle): This was completely different than the Daytona incident. At Daytona Larson was in the wall and the medical crew wasn't sure if he needed attention. It was a hard hit and they had to act right away. With Biffle it wasn't a hard hit and he eventually drove off the track before the cars got back or near him.

In fact, the whole field made it past where he spun and had no incident. Maybe you can try and fight the fact that there could have been some debris left over from Biffle, but they had no incident and with one pass by there wasn't a big concern. The other debris caution in question was with around 15 laps to go (I believe) and would have time to cut a tire AND have time for that tire to wear down. But, I do see some peoples argument that Biffles' car could have sprayed debris. The only thing we know there is nothing came of it and all the drivers made it back safe.


Martin Turex Jr. The Long Road Back


This one will be short and sweet, but I thought it was only right to continue to spotlight Martin Truex Jr and his return back to success. Ever since 2013 at Richmond life has been rough for he and his family, personally and professionally.

Well, he has started 2015 completely opposite as 2014. This year he has started with 5 straight top 10's. In 2014 he only had five total top 10's. He has also lead more laps in 2015 then he did the entire 2014 season and is currently 3rd in the points. The top 10 streak is bound to end at some point but it is great to watch while it continues.

Even when it ends, Truex and Furniture Row have shown they have bounced back and are ready to contend to make the Chase. Even more then that though, they have shown the fight that they could pull off a win or two and maybe even make a big run during the Chase.

It will be a fun run to watch all season! Good luck to Martin and the #78 team.

2015 Week 6 Preview: Martinsville

The end of last weeks race at Auto Club was entertaining to say the least. Some fans loved it, some hated it, and everyone had an opinion about it. That's because it was a race that finished under controversy.

But, this week I am ready to move on from all of that and focus on the next race. After all, sometimes its just good that people are talking about NASCAR. It shows how passionate fans are, but at the same time brings out some of the negative side in people that tends to happen in sports and competition.

So this week NASCAR heads to Martinsville and four drivers have pretty much locked up a Chase spot. Will Martinsville bring a fifth? Jimmie Johnson has already won this year and will most likely be a favorite, but guys like Dale Earnhardt Jr, Denny Hamlin, and Jeff Gordon have not and may all get a chance on Sunday.

Things are sure to heat up here as it is the shortest track on the Cup schedule (0.526 miles). Last year Joey Logano set a new qualifying record that will be interesting to watch this week (18.898 sec, 100.201 MPH). With this being a short track his record may stand this weekend, but it will be a story to watch.

The other interesting thing to watch is NASCAR will now be transitioning back to some shorter tracks in the coming weeks. After starting out the year with mostly intermediate tracks, NASCAR will now see Martinsville, Bristol, and Richmond in the coming weeks (Texas mixed in). So, will a different driver not named Harvick start to get on a roll? Who will it be?



The Good
  • Jimmie Johnson- 8 career wins for JJ ties him with Gordon. JJ has 22 top 10's top 10's in 26 career starts at Martinsville to go along with 18 top 5's. So, needless to say, JJ is pretty good here.
  • Jeff Gordon- It is still yet to be seen who will win #9 at Martinsville first, Gordon or JJ. Gordon is done running full time after 2015 so these maybe his last two shots at it. Last time NASCAR was here he finished second and has 21 top 10's in his last 24 starts here.
  • Clint Bowyer- Bowyer has 6 straight top 10's (including 3 top 5's in that time). He also has 7 top 10's in his last 8 races here. You can almost count on a top 10 from Bowyer if he stays clean at Martinsville.
  • Extra Credit- Denny Hamlin
The Middle
  • Matt Kenseth- In 30 career starts Kenseth only has 11 top 10 finishes at Martinsville. However, three of those have been in his last three starts and he hasn't finished higher than 14th in his last six races.
The Bad
  • Kyle Larson- Only three starts here, but in those three he has had two bad luck occurences. Do I expect him to stay on this list? No. But its still worth noting he has had some bad luck, and his one other race was a 27th place finish. He also has yet to start in the top 15.
  • Michael McDowell- I hate putting the "little guys" on this list because being underfunded puts them at a disadvantage, but having 0 top 10's and the worst track average of any current CUp driver (36.6) will not excuse you from the "Bad."
  • Casey Mears- In his last 11 starts at Martinsville Mears has only 3 top 20's and 1 top 15. When we are looking at smaller teams its really important to look at the 20-25 finish range to judge them on (because they just don't have the same funding). He has really struggled here since leaving Hendrick Motorsports.
Track Stats
  • 8 straight Chevy wins here at Martinsville
  • Other then Denny Hamlin (Toyota) Chevy has won 17 straight races. That's 17 of the past 21 races. If you add in Rusty Wallace's win in 2004 (Dodge) its 19 of the past 24.
  • The race has been won from the Pole 4 times in the last 13 races.
  • Most cautions was 21 in 2004 for 127 laps.
  • The farthest back a winner has started from was 36th (Kurt Busch) in 2002 (10/20/2002). Kurt won in 2014 after starting 22nd (3/30/2014) and Dale Jr won after starting 23 (10/26/14)
